1) What will you be doing with this PC? Gaming? Photoshop? Web browsing? etc
Gaming, web browsing and a little programming.
2) What's your budget? Are tax and shipping included?
I'm trying to keep it around $1000 - $1300 ish. Since new parts are always being released I have a difficult time justifying paying for the absolute best hardware.
3) Where do you live?
Dallas/Fort Worth, Texas
4) What exact parts do you need for that budget? CPU, RAM, case, etc. The word "Everything" is not a valid answer. Please list out all the parts you'll need.
Case, Processor, Motherboard, Memory, Video Card, Hard Drive, DVD Drive, Power Supply.
5) If reusing any parts, what parts will you be reusing? Please be especially specific about the power supply. List make and model.
This will be a fresh build. I already have a decent keyboard and mouse that I intend to use.
6) Will you be overclocking?
I haven't overclocked before but would like to give it a shot in the future.
7) What size monitor do you have and/or plan to have?
22" at 1680x1050 for my primary monitor at this point, but I may keep the system hooked up to my 40" 1080p tv if it looks/performs alright though.
8) When do you plan on building/buying the PC?
This month - March
9) What features do you need in a motherboard? RAID? Firewire? Crossfire or SLI support? USB 3.0? SATA 6Gb/s? etc.
I don't want to go SLI/Crossfire since I've always preferred single card setups. I've been away from the hardware scene for a few years so I'm still trying to catch up on everything.
10) Do you already have a legit and reusable/transferable OS key/license? If so, what OS? Is it 32bit or 64bit?
Yes, I have a copy of Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit. I also plan to dual-boot Linux.
I was looking at either going with a 1366 build since Microcenter has the i7 950 for $199.99 or 1155. Would I be better off waiting for the Sandy Bridge motherboards to reappear in stores and instead grab an i7 2500k with something like the ASUS P8P67 Pro?
I'm upgrading from Gateway P-172s FX laptop that I bought a few years ago which has an Intel Core 2 Duo T5750 @ 2.0Ghz, 3GB of RAM, and a Geforce 8800M GTS so I'm sure either system would be a great improvement. I've missed out on a lot of new games because I don't like having to turn all of my settings down just to play at a tolerable framerate. I definitely miss having the option to upgrade parts or just tinker.
Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
So far, this is what I'm working with:
Cooler Master Storm Scout
Corsair XMS 4GB(2x2GB) DDR3 1333
Samsung Spinpoint F3 1TB HDD
Corsair TX750W PSU
Samsung DVD Drive
XFX Radeon HD 6850
EVGA X58 Motherboard
Intel Core i7 950
Gaming, web browsing and a little programming.
