I have been looking into moving from my 19inch trinitron flat crt into widescreen LCD. I do not edit videos or pics; this will be for gaming and internet surfing.

My current vid card is nVidia 6800gt oc, BFG

I would like the best deal I can get and if ossible under $500.
So far the Dell 2005FPW looks good and I really like the Acer AL2032W.

Anyone have opinions on these two in reguards to gaming/features/reliability?

Is there a different monitor in this price range i should consider?

Thanks!

I have had both over the last month.

There was less motion blur when playing BF2 on the Acer. I like the Crystal Brite coating on the Acer in my setup glare is not an issue. The Dell has more inputs. The Dell has an anti glare coating that I couldn't get used to. It made images "fuzzy". The colors on the Dell were a tad richer. The Dell is adjustable vertically and will do portrait mode. Blacks are black on the Acer. Warranty is a wash, 3 years on both. I had to exchange the first Dell I got because of the horrible backlight bleed. The 2nd one I got was almost perfect

Basically I returned the Dell due to the anti glare coating, I just couldn't get used to it.

Acer Ferrari f-20, or Al2032wA same monitor.....

i don't know why anyone would buy a dell while knowing he might have to return it 3-4 times because of backlight bleading ......

in additon to what flake mentioned, Acer has a higher contrast ratio ..........

I've owned both and in the end I stuck with the Dell 2005FPW. Now for me the situation was different, the Acer was $150 more than the Dell so keep that in mind.

The Dell provides more inputs, an adjustable stand and and a better price.

The Acer looked better (bezel and etc), had a better base (metal) and was brighter. To be honest, I thought the Acer was too bright though. The biggest problem I had with the Acer was it wouldn't display the full imagine when running off the D-Sub with my PowerBook 15". I lost about 1/4" off the bottom of the image (ie I couldn't see the whole dockbar).

I didn't get a chance to play games on the Acer so I can't comment on the ghosting but I find the Dell has some ghosting. For the most part it isn't noticeable but trying to be gunner in a Chopper in BF2 can be hard when the chopper is swinging around because of the ghosting.

I havent had any problems with the Dell although there is slight backlight bleeding in all four corners. I dont notice them unless Im looking for it though.

If the Acer didn't have the problem with the Powerbook and was the same price, I probably would have stuck with the Acer.

I've been an owner of the 2005FPW for just about a year now and I'm still fairly happy with it. I can't comment on the Acer as I have not owned it, but from the reviews on this board and around the net it seems like a fairly decent LCD.

A few comments on what has been said above. The anti-glare coating can be very nice and I have not had a problem with it yet effecting image quality at all. What I have noticed is that the Analog input is "fuzzy" in comparison to the DVI-D input which may have been the cause for PornFlake. When I have the screen running at native resolution (1680x1050) on my x300 Analog output on my Dell Inspiron 6000 -or- my analog output on my X850XT it just does not look very sharp at all. Once I switch over to DVI-D it's a different story, the images look great.

I did have a question about the Acer screen, how well does it handle running at lower resolutions? I’m sure that for the most part we’re not always going to be able to run at native resolution. It has always impressed me that I can find a good lower resolution on my 2005FPW that does not look horrible...

The main reason that I hold back from getting the Dell is that the 12 ms response time is supposed to be very unreliable. I really hope Dell has resolved this issue with the 2007fpw...if it ever comes out...

dont look at numbers for contrast ratio

people are always complaining about having to replace their dell monitors so much when I have had 3 and never had to replace any

never bleeding, never dead pixels, etc. - the dell is okay, good price though

i don't know much about the acer. have you seen the sceptre 20 inch" wide whatever? 380, no experience with that either

Thanks for the comments thus far, its greatly appreciated!

As for the Sceptre, yeah, i've seen it and from what I hear you get what you pay for and this monitor appears to be the bottom of the barrel.

So far the Dell looks hit and miss, as most stuff and the Acer is mostly unknown but I saw the acer at a local computer store and it was sick; it would be nice if dell sold in stores to make exchange of deffective parts easier.

Still up for opinions.
=)
