Researchers have conducted the first large-scale measurement of how mainstream and alternative news flows through multiple social media platforms. Based on their findings it appears that Reddit and 4chan serve as an incubation chamber for a lot of information. It just goes to show how ingrained social media is becoming in our society. We have three totally different media platforms influencing each other and influencing the users of all three platforms. However, just because something is alternative news doesn't mean it's not true. We have to be very careful with how we handle this going forward. You can read the paper here.

After analyzing millions of posts containing mainstream and alternative news shared on Twitter, Reddit and 4chan, Jeremy Blackburn, Ph.D., and collaborators found that alt-right communities within 4chan, an image-based discussion forum where users are anonymous, and Reddit, a social news aggregator where users vote up or down on posts, have a surprisingly large influence on Twitter.

The biggest problem is that people feel twitter is important. It's only important because people believe other people believe its important. Pretty soon people will realize twitter represents a minority and its relevance will go down to something normal.

The idea of someone being piled on because they made a slip and didn't review every word with a PR team with the interest of a career politician has its days numbered.

It is not the majority that effects societal change, but the most vocal. Less than 100,000 dedicated bolsheviks were able to radically transform Russia. A handful of National Socialists were able to spark the most notorious genocide in human history, and plunge the world into war.

It's what you expect of European peoples, who have developed a culture of dynamism and accelerationism. It's a double-edged sword. On one side you go from first in flight to traveling to the moon in a few decades, while you get LGBTBBQ and sex reassignment surgery on the other. It ain't easy being white.

I hope you're not saying sexual rights was the cause for the slow down of "American Exceptionalism" as that's morally reprehensible and completely false if so.

How about we look instead at more probable causes of the slow down. Whole Language (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whole_language) is a good start of the dumbing down of the workforce as it decreased people's vocabulary - larger vocabulary is vital to complex thought

Or how about the $2.4 trillion dollars spent on the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq? If only that were spent on improving schools and making universities free. (the increase of military spending this year would have covered the free universities fyi)

  • After leading the world for decades in 25-34 year olds with university degrees, the U.S. is now in 12th place. The World Economic Forum ranked the U.S. at 52nd among 139 nations in the quality of its university math and science instruction in 2010. Nearly 50% of all graduate students in the sciences in the U.S. are foreigners, most of whom are returning to their home countries;
  • The Oklahoma Council of Public Affairs commissioned a civic education poll among public school students. A surprising 77% didn't know that George Washington was the first President; couldn't name Thomas Jefferson as the author of the Declaration of Independence; and only 2.8% of the students actually passed the citizenship test. Along similar lines, the Goldwater Institute of Phoenix did the same survey and only 3.5% of students passed the civics test;
  • According to the National Research Council report, only 28% of high school science teachers consistently follow the National Research Council guidelines on teaching evolution, and 13% of those teachers explicitly advocate creationism or "intelligent design;"
  • 18% of Americans still believe that the sun revolves around the earth, according to a Gallup poll;
  • The American Association of State Colleges and Universities report on education shows that the U.S. ranks second among all nations in the proportion of the population aged 35-64 with a college degree, but 19th in the percentage of those aged 25-34 with an associate or high school diploma, which means that for the first time, the educational attainment of young people will be lower than their parents;
  • 74% of Republicans in the U.S. Senate and 53% in the House of Representatives deny the validity of climate change despite the findings of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences and every other significant scientific organization in the world;
  • According to the 2009 National Assessment of Educational Progress, 68% of public school children in the U.S. do not read proficiently by the time they finish third grade. And the U.S. News & World reported that barely 50% of students are ready for college level reading when they graduate;
  • According to a 2006 survey by National Geographic-Roper, nearly half of Americans between ages 18 and 24 do not think it necessary to know the location of other countries in which important news is being made. More than a third consider it "not at all important" to know a foreign language, and only 14 percent consider it "very important;"
  • According to the National Endowment for the Arts report in 1982, 82% of college graduates read novels or poems for pleasure; two decades later only 67% did. And more than 40% of Americans under 44 did not read a single book--fiction or nonfiction--over the course of a year. The proportion of 17 year olds who read nothing (unless required by school ) has doubled between 1984-2004;
  • Gallup released a poll indicating 42 percent of Americans still believe God created human beings in their present form less than 10,000 years ago;
  • A 2008 University of Texas study found that 25 percent of public school biology teachers believe that humans and dinosaurs inhabited the earth simultaneously.

Unchecked religious idiocies is also to blame for the dwindling of scientific understanding.

Personally, I'm quite relieved to see the left and their allies in the media starting to tighten the noose on free speech.

Free speech is a right guaranteed by the Constitution, but only if that speech is true and accurate, as determined by the appropriate authorities at the DNC and Facebook/Google/Twitter, and not offensive to a protected group. This is the only way forward to our glorious new future, where, like in North Korea, the citizenry can take comfort knowing that everything they hear from the media has been vetted by the appropriate authorities.

Please give examples of this free speech being taken away.

If you're talking about denouncing hate speech you're incorrect. No one is taking anyone's right away there - the person is still free to say whatever they want. What is happening is the moral repercussions of such speech.

More specifically the constitution prevents the GOVERNMENT (federal/state/local) from taking action against people for saying things. No one should ever be arrested for saying anything - oc this is not always followed and there is public backlash when this is broken. The first amendment does not protect people from other people for what they say. The audience is free to give feedback to the original speaker, as that too is freedom of speech.

If you're talking about the neo-nazis that are trying to speak at colleges about white supremacy and their inability to do so due to protests is, again, protected by free speech. The hateful neo-nazis are receiving social backlash in the form of protests (freedom of speech) for their (the neo-nazis') hateful rhetoric.

It's amazing how ignorant those proclaiming "freedoms are being taken away" are... Then again they are stupid enough to listen to Hannity and Limbaugh so i guess i shouldnt be too surprised.

Don't talk to me about your morality. That's as ambiguous and baseless as the religious belief you so crassly dismiss. [/QUOTE]

The US spends more, per student, in real terms, than at any point it's history. The United States is in the top 2% of nations in education spending. With each passing year, an ever larger number of Americans attend university, which you use as a proxy for intelligence.

How do you explain the decline in intellectual capacity at the same time as explosive growth in the percentage of Americans with degrees?

Unchecked religious idiocies is also to blame for the dwindling of scientific understanding.

Really, so the US is MORE religious NOW than it was during it's most successful periods? It's apparent you have a liberal bone to pick...military spending, religion...and are not bound to logic and reason despite your cut-and-paste argument.

The reasons lie elsewhere, but you don't have the intellectual integrity to look. A transformation of public schools into social indoctrination centers bolstered by left wing teacher's unions, a cultural celebration of stupidity among some groups (don't act 'white'), mass illegal immigration of largely illiterate (in their native language) people from cultures that may not put a high value on education.

College degrees = intelligence? Lol. There’s a difference between underwater basket weaving and engineering.

<unintelligable, unbacked, words>

Please backup your assertions with actual researched statistics. As it is it's impossible to know what's actually true and what's just Appalachian back-woods beliefs.

Thanks! :)

P.S. There seems to be much anger in your writing, I suggest you take a timeout before responding!
P.P.S. For education numbers make sure to focus on only US students as most of the time numbers include total enrollment and correlate the total number of enrollments against the increased population of the US
P.P.P.S. The main concern about free education is also regarding student debt which has "risen to nearly $1.4 trillion by late 2016, roughly 7.5% GDP." - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Student_loans_in_the_United_States, https://www.newyorkfed.org/research/staff_reports/sr733.html

Standard leftist talking points. Everything is relative. We determine what hate speech is. Preemptive violence is justified. "Moral consequences" The US is a backward, evil nation illegitimate from it's founding, and therefore has no right to control it's borders....etc etc.

I see, so you and your friends at Antifa are free to impose 'consequences', as you see fit, upon anyone who utters something you and your leftist friends have give yourselves the power to determine is "hate"?

If I state: "Illegal aliens should all be deported", is that hate speech? Most who think like you would say so, Should my spouse and children be harassed at work and school? Should I have my home address posted, my neighbors contacted, and the vague threat of violence as a possibility left hanging in order to intimidate and silence me, because of my "hate speech". Free Speech must not be infringed upon by the government, but just know if you step out of line...er, I mean use "hate speech" I and my family may be ruined for life by a righteous mob of leftists?

Is burning the US flag and stomping on it an act of hate? Is executing the president in effigy an act of hate?

"Hate" is in the eye of the beholder, and not everyone is stupid enough to watch as you and your despicable friends allow intimidation as a reaction to words they find offensive to become the norm.

Oh yes because it's only "leftists" who harass the families of people. Let's forget about Seth Rich - http://www.latimes.com/business/hollywood/la-et-ct-fox-news-seth-rich-20170801-story.html

If you say, "Illegal aliens should all be deported," I simply think you're misinformed and primitive in your view of the world. It does not cross my threshold to start a protest against it.

Burning the US Flag or stomping on it on the ground are both protected under the 1st amendment. People should realize acts of that level of disrespect should only be demonstrated on rare occasion when warrented (that decision is on the individual level, not mine or yours for another person)

"Hate" is in the eye of the beholder. Realize though that if what one person views as not-hate yet everyone else views it as hate, there will be backlash against the one person. Again both parties are protected by the first amendment.

I mean i can keep going over this but this is US civics 101. Hell it's what every elementary school student should know as their rights.

It may or may not. I am simply saying just saying it does not make it true.

The main push behind publicly funded education is to take away the burden of debt for the students.

Though tbh the fact that only about 40% of adults in the US have a college education is sad. (this includes both 2 and 4 years)

There was a dip in the mid 2000's but overall the trend has been upward which hopefully continues with the next census.

Let's take a look at student loan debt - which is the main push behind publicly funded higher education

"Notorious" is correct. Stalin's purges are not nearly as well known, sadly.
Exactly. Stalin committed greater mass murder in sheer numbers, and for percentages, Pol Pot was much more effective. However, if you want to describe someone as the epitome of evil, you call them "Hitler," not "Stalin" or "Pol Pot."

it's pretty obvious that we have been living in a /b/ocracy for some time now

Huh, look at that. As soon as the United States moved away from a policy of "free university" student loan debt rose tremendously.

Oh wait, we never had such a policy in place. So when do we get to the point in the debate where you discuss the exponential rise in the cost of a college education that's behind the large student debt loads...what's the justification for that?

Your answer to skyrocketing tuition rates is to force taxpayers to cover the cost, along with any increases academia demands in the future. Not entirely unexpected from a shallow thinker.

Oh, and your reference to "Backwoods, Appalachian beliefs". Is that hatred, or are poor rural whites an acceptable target for your mockery and disdain?

Can we crack jokes about third generation welfare mothers with 5 children by 4 men in an inner city housing project? Or would that kind of comment result in you going on a quest to impose 'consequences' for daring to speak that way?

The thing that worries me is the number people that dont want to talk anymore. People are very angry and ready to fight these days.

I still don’t get why he keeps insisting everyone needs to go to college and that college is an indication of intelligence. Most college majors are a joke, and we shouldn’t be making it free for that reason. Too much screwing around for the public to foot the bill.

QQ ranting

I love the fact that all you can do is complain as all your assertions are shown to be false. Your original argument that "freedom of speech is being taken away by liberals" is long forgotten with a quick rebuttal of truth :)

You have a nice story there where we've lowered standard year over year to help push more student through to college where they can become debt slaves to help fund a continual quality/standards lowering higher education system. So the best course of action instead of pulling funding for bullshit degrees of bullshit quality is to make the general public fund the higher education gravy train through their taxes.

Political correctness is a slow and cancerous form of speech suppression. Internet forums are the antithesis. It is no wonder they are a place of influence.

Media has become a reality distortion device. We've been slammed over the head about Russia so long that we forgot about all the straight up propaganda from within the US; or the "election influencing" from the UK (namely revolving around brexit and those trying to relate that vote and the elections as similar), the rest of the EU doing the same, plus one-offs like Australia or Canada getting in their two cents.

By definition: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foreign_electoral_intervention, Foreign electoral interventions are attempts by governments, covertly or overtly, to influence elections in another country. There are many ways that nations have accomplished regime change abroad, and electoral intervention is only one of those methods.

https://www.fec.gov/updates/foreign-nationals/

Every country mentioned did so. Why aren't we investigating them? Oh that's right, russia is our enemy now! That's the message being pushed now, correct?

They've gone so far on their russia witch-hunt we're even being told Facebook and Twitter were on their side and that they were actually pushing more conservative news than liberal/progressive... and yet a year ago:

So when some moderately intelligent person sees this kind of 1984-reference-inducing trash, they will turn to those "fringe" websites. And the "power that be" know that. Clinton's campaign tested the reddit waters with CorrectTheRecord (but again, you'll only hear about the_donald being the place full of 100% russian bots and no human influence whatsoever).

The next election, WHEW. There will be no "clean" place to discuss anything. There will be multiple layers of propaganda, misinformation, headgames going on. Bots, paid trolls, etc etc; HUNDREDS of MILLIONS will be spent on them. Let them, both sides. Then hopefully people will finally figure out to start thinking for themselves.

Oh look another lemming of falsehoods!

Paying for higher education is an upfront investment with large payouts over the lifetime of each individual.

http://money.cnn.com/2017/01/09/pf/college/college-degree-payoff/index.html
...college grads with a full-time job earned a median of 67% more than high school grads last year. That doesn't include those who went on to receive an advanced degree.

https://www.marketwatch.com/story/a-college-degree-is-worth-1-million-2015-05-07
College graduates earn $1 million more than high school graduates over their lifetime...

And I will agree that some majors really should be tossed in the trash
...the income gap between the highest-paid college majors and the lowest-paid is more than $3 million dollars.

Please give examples of this free speech being taken away.

Actually, the right of "Neo Nazis" as you call them, to speak on college campuses is constitutionally protected, assuming we are talking about a public university.

I also think it is dangerous to believe that freedom of speech begins and ends at the right to not be imprisoned for speech. If corporations can silence people for their beliefs, then you really aren't free to speak. Sure, you shouldn't be insulated from all consequences, but monopolies and oligopolies, such as Facebook, shouldn't have that kind of power.

I actually read through this report, and I don't see what definition they are using for "alt right." If they mean "any alternative, right leaning news source," then that's a pretty big brush. What about "alternative left" news sources?

The Neo Nazis have all the rights to speak at any university. If the outcry and protests are too large against that person, the university does have the ability to cancel the event for public safety. Any Neo Nazi can still show up if they want to though.

Corporations are not governments. When anyone signs up for any social network there's fine print saying the company can delete posts and remove users. Same with employees. When people are hired they agree to company policies usually around inclusiveness. If anyone breaks those rules companies have full rights - which employees have agreed to - to fire the employee or punish them in other ways. The employee at all times has the right to quit if they find conditions not to their liking.

Again nothing is hindering a person's freedom of speech as given by the first amendment.
What does and should prevent people of sick minds from spouting hate is the social repercussions which too are protected by freedom of speech.

Again, this has been decided. The heckler's veto is unconstitutional. The Supreme Court has said this. Sure, if there's a bomb threat or something, they can evacuate the building, but there would probably be an injunction forcing the university to allow another event, and they are required to provide adequate security. Otherwise, any speech could be shut down. Had Coulter pressed the issue, the courts would have decided in her favor, but she chose not to.

And why are you bringing up that one incident with the challenger? Was I defending that guy? Seems to me like you're just reaching to make a bullshit argument.

Yup, he is. His posts match his name too! "travesty" ;).

And again, private institutions can do "whatever they want," just because they are private. Are you an arch libertarian? I agree, the first amendment primarily protects you from the government, with some exceptions. However, the first amendment isn't the only factor in discussing free speech.

I said they could cancel the event. Not prevent her from ever going back to give an event. So great job bending my argument. Also care to link to the supreme court case you're referring to? Not sure what exactly you're proclaiming the SC decided
