It's just the games people play you always have Dota 2 and Counterstrike at #1 and #2 both valve games.
I think the majority of people playing Steam art younger kids who stick to the game and never stray to anything else except what is cool at the moment. With any major release like Dark Souls 3 was popular for about a month or two then it dropped to the mid section. Just the quality of game for the first 1-10 games or so isn't very good I have no idea why people stick with those same 1-10 games. Maybe the perfect game has yet to be created for people to jump on.

I can see why Rocket League is up there people like cars everyone else in the world likes soccer perfect combination.
So basically you have are games with lots of replay value that don't commit to anything.

Well DOTA 2 is free to play and MOBAs are, by far, the most popular game for eSports right now. I believe DOTA 2 is the most popular of them at the moment or maybe LOL is. I don't know. Either way people really love it. CS has been popular for ages and it's always on sale.

I think it's just flavor of the Month cycle with Steam when a new Game release people get sick of it pretty quick when they reach end game or either have only 1/2 hour invested in the game.

from the few hours i played it on free weekend, rocket league was very fun, simple enough that just about anybody can play and have fun, with a big enough learning curve that even more experienced player can have fun...

Seems to also favor multiplayer games.. Im hooked right now on Destiny because Im playing with a couple local players and loving it. The game is good, but playing with people in a party changes the experience.

CS:GO is near the top. Before that, CS Source was, and before that CS was. Why? It's a simple and fun game and Valve doesn't charge 59.99 for it. But you are correct, people into online gaming all pile onto one game at once. That's why Battlefield servers are empty, because COD MW 3 came out. From what I understand, Destiny isn't too popular anymore and people were going crazy for The Division. I think they are bailing on The Division and I don't know what it will be replaced with.

You're surprised Dark Souls 3 was only popular for a short time? It's a single player game. After the hype wears off and people finish the game, they go back to the tried and true multiplayer games they enjoy.

This is why I feel that if you want to play a multiplayer game, you're sort of forced into having to buy it Day One. The game will most likely be empty otherwise.

What sets CSGO apart from the rest? They don't throw away the game every year or two and redo it. People don't like total change, they like some with new maps but not a whole new game.

Look at COD and how fragmented the community is with a release every year. It's a total mess.

CSGO has excellent VOIP which makes for a chat room feeling built into a well designed game.

To me it's clear why it's played by hundreds of thousands of people every day if you like FPS. And well, there are the gun skins. While not very exciting to older crowds the young kids get all wrapped up in the skins and trade each other.

So you got the skins and trading, the solid game play, and the good VOIP chat system plus the game stays the way players want and Valve listens.

I wouldnt say Valve listens per say as they dont know how to do games anymore aside from selling them. And GO changes a lot with recoil adjustments and other "fine" tuning of the weapons way more often than necessary. Unless you play it consistently its hard to stay attuned to the changes and keep your skill up without a new learning curve every month or two. With CS and CS S it was much easier as their tweaks were not as crazy (other than 1.3 and 1.6 in CS) or as frequent.

That's not true. About a couple months ago they made a gun spread change and within a short period of time they reverted back because of the widespread complaining. And I mean like 1 week to 3 weeks, I am not sure of the time frame before they acted but it wasn't long. Valve has much at stake for they are one of the few games leading competition.

so the OP really is not baffled by the Steam stats but by the number of people playing the Top Games on Steam which he deems childish or not very good...

We must not forget though, that CSGO, unlike all of the other CS's, has microtransaction (Skins and more importantly, maps).

So Valve has a greater incentive to listen to the crowd from a business point of view. While I'd like to give Valve the benefit of doubt, it's pretty likely that because CS:GO has actual income besides the base game itself that Valve reacts to player reaction.

People like repetitive multiplayer games because they're quick and easy and don't require huge amounts of thought. It's why cod and madden will ALWAYS blow away Witcher and Dark Souls

Same principle applies to why dumb superhero movies will always blow away any "unique" film, people don't tend to like to be challenged by their entertainment.

did you really just imply that dota 2 requires no thought? I suggest you give it a try and see how it goes

I still play TF2 occasionally.

I have a buddy, ALL he's played for the last 8-10 years is Warcraft III and TF2. That's it.

Some people don't like change.

Whatever the top competitive games are, are what stays at the top. Being competitive in something requires a lot of play time/ practice. I know several people that ONLY play those games.
