Steam Has 33 Million Daily and 67 Million Monthly Active Users

    Steam is already a monster, but it continues to grow at a steady rate: at this year’s INDIGO, the largest independent games showcase in the Netherlands, Valve employee Alden Kroll revealed that Steam now has 33 million daily and 67 million monthly active users. The record for concurrent users (users online simultaneously) remains at 14 million. In another amusing stat, Valve received 300K refund requests the first day of the Summer Sale.

    Furthermore, Alden claimed that there have been 26 million new purchasers since January 2016, meaning that the total number of purchasers has been increasing by about 1.5 million users per month. Overall, this shows why Steam is considered the most popular digital platform. This also shows how stupidly some publishers basically sabotage their own sales by not releasing their games on Steam (as they are obviously trying to promote their own digital services. We are looking at you Microsoft and EA).

    I love Steam, but I end up buying more games than I'll ever play. For me it is a perfect place for VR, as least for the Vive. Anyone have an Oculus and feel that Steam is not a good place, or the if Oculus store has any clear (besides exclusives) advantages?

    Good to see that it looks like PC gaming is alive and well. Just curious how these numbers compare to PSN or XBox Live numbers.

    Well, since there were a total of 53.4 worldwide sales of PS4 as of 1/1/2017 it's likely there are more monthly Steam users than the total number of PS4's that exist.

    I own both HMDs. I refuse to buy anything from the Oculus Store. Steam VR works great on both. My Oculus has been relegated to cockpit duty (Elite:Dangerous and DCS). I own Touch, but its been sitting a drawer for months. The setup was way too annoying to live with (USB cords everywhere, and the logistics of it forced my PC into one weird corner)

    I'm curious though from the EA side, EA/DICE released Bad Company 2 on steam, and at least tried. Origin as we know it today was either not there yet or still in it's infancy. But they didn't go back to the platform for Battlefield 3 or future titles etc, so I'm assuming they didn't find it beneficial/too costly or at least were betting on their own origin platform.

    origin has come a long way from what began as just simply EA downloader for digital downloads and nothing more. but I do wish they would release their titles on steam again, hell they could still require origin to be fired up once the game is launched just like what is done for Ubisoft's rainbow Six Siege and uPlay, as annoying as that is.

    Right as we speak, Valve is making three new AAA IP's for Steam VR.

    Gabe Newell:

    It's an economic issue, they simply don't want to give Steam 30% of their PC sales. It's exactly the same argument that many make against the Windows Store.

    And I'm totally stocked for that. But VR games are a very thing market but Steam has a lot invested in VR. Still when it comes to game releases and Valve I'll believe it when I see it. I tend to believe that they will release what was mentioned here but still... Valve is much more about content distribution than creation these days.

    I remembers the days of steam where it was absolute garbage and a giant pain in the butt to use. They have come a long way since the first retail launch. Just wish they would stick more to creating games...you know like HL3 that we will never ever see. That will be their biggest fails in the history of their company.

    I buy all my VR games through Oculus home unless:

    1. It's more than a few dollars cheaper on Steam.
    2. It's a multiplayer game, there's no cross-platform matching, AND a friend already owns the game on Steam, or plans to buy it soon.
    The main reason I buy games from Home is Steam's VR support is rather buggy when compared to Home. Steam's VR services crash often; I get kicked out of VR and often requiring Steam be restarted before it starts working again. If Home has ever crashed on me, I can't remember when it was.

    I also prefer Home's VR interface to Steam's (Steam doesn't have one). With Home I only have to start the app, put on my HMD and I can leave it on until I'm done for the session. Steam's interface is just Big Screen mode slapped on a HMD.

    Seems like those 1.5 million people are only buying the same games. Gta V and Cs:go. Tons of other great games get lost in the madness of the terrible store design.
