Valve made the announcement yesterday afternoon.

https://steamcommunity.com/groups/steamworks/announcements/detail/2984186184800023530

We're thrilled to announce that Steam Deck dev kits are ready to ship, and we've opened up the Steam Deck Dev Kit request form.

As a Steam developer, you can go to the hardware request form to request a Steam Deck Dev Kit. Fill out the form and be sure to read through the agreement and dev kit guidelines. Dev kit supplies are limited, so we'll be reviewing requests via the online form on a case by case basis and will be shipping them out as quickly as possible.

We can't wait to get all of these dev kits into your hands, and we'd love to get your feedback on Steam Deck. You can reach out to us and collaborate with other Steam developers at the new Steam Deck developer subforum.

Or you know, you could just test-out your game on an RX 550, and call it a day?

This shit is trying t pretend it's some sort of a console! Are they somehow expecting these driver bugs to be any more numerous than the already-existing RDNA2 open-source drivers under Linux?

Well, testing on a PC doesn't tell the whole story. You might be using Deck features in your game (touch screen, gyro, etc.).

Also, the Deck is running a new OS, with a custom unreleased Proton version. So if you try to build a similar rig (with Arch Linux for example) your game might not work, but maybe it would work on the real Deck since the software is different.

Occasionally, there are games still releasing on Switch, with text/UI size issues. And for the first couple of years, it was not uncommon.

All packaged up and ready for devs! This is one of the limited batches of Steam Deck dev-kits heading out today for partners to test their games. These engineering verification test builds allow us to connect developers with units that are functionally identical to what will ship to you.

Since we are still in the final stages of development, the dev-kit program gives us the chance to guide game developers through the process of getting their games on Steam Deck while also continuing to gather their feedback as we prepare for the official launch at the end of the year.

Here are a few behind-the-scenes shots of developer units getting their last few updates before making their way out the door.

Optimizing controls for the specific steam deck layout can be pretty important.
