Steam 2013 Winter sale is here! runs from December 19th to January 2nd.

Anyone else having issues logging into the Steam web portal? Also seeing random pages like support and login erring out. Guessing they might be experiencing overload with the sale.

Left 4 Dead 2 just became free ;)

Yes Steam is down for me right now

Guess QoS and download queuing are foreign to them so they don't cut off their own legs. New to steam as of yesterday so I have no idea how good or crappy they are but now I know what to expect.

I haven't played Skyrim for a year and half. Are the add ons that can be bought separately worth getting in the Skyrim Legendary addition? Not sure if buying that game all over again (even if it is $5 cheaper than buying DLC content separately) is even worth it. I think the gaming world has moved beyond Skyrim offerings.

I'm trying to update the original thread but Steam seems to be down :( will try later

I liked Dragonborn. I skipped out on Dawnguard (the vampire and werewolf stuff bores me) and the heath thing.

Waiting for Runner 2 to go on a deeper discount. I mean, 83% off is awesome, but that's not even a flash or daily deals sale price. Grumble.

Holy crap

That page wont even load up anymore....

Getting same errors, i wanna buy the flash sales ugh!

Can't access anything but my library!

Steam doesnt want us to notice their crappy sales this year so they crashed their own site with the free Left for dead 2 offer.

LFD2 is a trash game I bought for $3 almost two years ago. I can't believe it broke their servers.

I'm not too worried about the error code, but I do find it interesting that L4D2 is free!

What made them do that?

So they have been pretty much up for 9 years but today they have issues while a ton of entitled people are hitting their site hard over a free game they could of had for less than $5 the last few years. This is what keeps them from having your $$. I think they will be okay with out them. I'm so glad you have detailed knowledge of their infrastructure.

Edit for the chart above me: I'm sorry 1928 Gbps isn't enough bandwidth for you. I mean these cheap games do solve first world problems so maybe I'm not being critical enough of them.

Comprehension and prevention are what separate network architects/engineers from apologist fanboys. They could've prevented cutting off their own legs by reserving, lets say, 10% bandwidth for priority traffic for login, news, status, store front and online game play while capping lower priority download traffic to 90% with a queuing system that says "due to heavy demand you are #x in queue for download" instead of letting things run helter skelter and suffer a total melt down.

It's probably less LFD2 and more "OMFG FREE GAME ON STEAM" kiddies. I'm sure they could have substituted any of several dozen other AAA titles from the past few years and it would have had a similar affect. I've already heard two of my nephews bitching that now they can't get LFD2 for free, but both went on to say they really didn't care about the game itself as much as getting it for free... Christmas dinner is such a pain when it drags them away from Steam or their Xbox 360/PS3/4 whatever on Christmas... Now I'm waiting for them to start asking if they can borrow this computer to log into their accounts to see if Steam is up yet!

Damn youth these days! :D (<--sarcasm)

I feel you guys pushing QoS and bandwidth reservation have no idea how enterprise level traffic really works.

They have the bandwidth. What they're running out of is hardware to fill those pipes. This is why you start to see the pages failing to load. I continue with, The steam download distribution system is completely separate from the store system. And is pushed by a global CDN. The bandwidth graphs you see are from the CONTENT servers. These are not the servers that process your purchase. Or serve you the store pages.

damnit, I was going to buy shelter (finally a game I voted for one) but servers still not working.

If I miss it because of this >_<

It must be the Target hackers again, incoming announcement from Gabe that millions of accounts have been compromised... :p

Pretty interesting that L4D 2 could take them down like this, especially with so many kids getting their xmas presents this morning, think they would be busy with other things...

Guess PC gaming isn't as dead as they say.

I would love to see some stats on how many requests per second they were answering. And sales. in copies-per-second form.

Its probably my fault. I added about 10 games to download queue :D

500 GB 840 Evo as Steam Drive

Like most people on this forum all you do is assume. Apparently I missed the press release of exactly what failed today. But hey throw out whatever snide insult you can. I mean you obviously think highly of yourself to insult(apologist fanboy really? I enjoy the Steam product but they don't pay my mortgage).

This is what the ignore list is for :) No more rude trash comments to read from you!

Good, get lost and practice what you preach because you're describing exactly yourself with your response.

Oh get over yourself. Steam rarely goes down.

Just went up and down, L4D2 is still free though.

Still debating if I should get the Endless Space game with expansion for 8.74 or so.

I can access the store but I can not purchase a game, just error's out when I go to checkout.

sigh, finally one game I want and I can't bloody buy it.

Site is back up and working now... I think the community choices are either a sham or everyone is choosing the cheapest possible option... wtf with shelter, your a mother badger...

Voting for that saved like $1.25 or something. Why would anyone vote to save that little.

So, did you get the 4-pack? j/k lol :D
