Undead Labs has released a massive 20GB patch for State of Decay 2, fixing a variety of glaring issues that plagued the open world zombie survival game. The patch provides increased stability, improved networking interactions for clients and networked vehicle interactions, and eliminates Out of Memory crashes.

According to studio head Jeff Strain, "This patch today is just the beginning -- we have big plans for State of Decay 2, and we’re humbled and appreciative to you for giving us the opportunity to make those big plans happen."

Of course, the game launching with this shit taken care of wasn't "the beginning."

It's been the same old story for a decade or so now.

1. Management doesn't give a realistic time estimate to get the game completed, because shareholders like to have their money faster.
2. Developers crunch to make it happen, but it's still not realistic even with a crunch.
3. The game ships in a beta state because there wasn't enough time to finish it.
4. Day one, week one, and month one patches galore because the game shipped before it was finished.
5. Customers buy the game anyway, so there was no negative consequences for the company for managing the game development this way.

Rinse and repeat.

minor changes for effect

Just sounds like big compressed files.. when one is updated, the whole compressed file needs to be in the patch.
Come on guys..

And the reason games are launched buggy is a timeline issue. Publisher wants the game out asap, devs can't keep up. This is nothing new, it's how video game business has been now for a long time ever since video game went mainstream.

It's a pretty cool game btw, been hooked on it since getting it on memorial day.

and until that changes, people pre-ordering a beta game, there is no reason to expect the publisher to do anything differently
It's a normal playable game tho.. bugs don't mean beta. I'd love a bug-free finished working game every time a game is released, but that's not how the world turns. The only way for that to happen is for gaming to slow down and give a years' time extra for every game release. If the buyer and publisher can't wait an extra year then this is what we get.

True, bugs don't mean beta, but the majority of modern AAA games are in a beta state on launch day. Here's the difference:

Some bugs developers just can't find because they're too specific and manage to miss during testing. They can't foresee every single possibility and configuration, so once it hits the public, they become aware of some things that slipped through the cracks during testing and patch it once they start getting data back.

Most of the bugs plaguing modern AAA releases are ones any idiot playing through the game will run into. This is stuff that simply couldn't have been missed during testing, assuming there even was a final testing phase. If you can't finish the campaign, if EVERY player will run into a specific bug, if it affects every user on an AMD card, etc. then the game is a beta. It wasn't fit for release and it's obvious it needed more time in the oven.

Another way to look at it is day one patch = beta. If your game is fit for release you CAN'T release a day one patch because to the best of your knowledge, it's DONE, there's nothing to fix yet. You tested for everything you were capable of, and can only patch once you run into rare scenarios that you somehow missed.

Pc gamer are so wet with their reviews. If it's a big title and it's a mess they'll just wave it through saying it's not perfect. Eurogamer basically called the game a shits stain. One site has balls the other is cupping the balls of a publisher
