This is the second time in 2 months where the entire hard drive became corrupt and I have lost all of the data..

Now I am just going to rezero the 160gb maxtor drive and hope that it solves most of the problems
I don't get how the drive just randomly gets corrupt and the whole drive fails

Well, the "nice" thing with Maxtor is if your hard drive fails, they usually replace it with a higher capacity drive (at least for me).

 how does one do this?

Call up Maxtor, say my drive died, get an RMA, and wait for the better hard drive.

They only do this if they don't have the drive you're RMA'ing in stock. Most of my Maxtor drives die after they're quite old, so they're not a model they keep in stock, so I usually get them replaced with their new faster-higher capacity drives (next step up from the one I sent in).

yeah, that wouldnt work with mine, i bought it a year ago oh well :(
