Start Folding the Easy Way!!

mekkanic, your stats are here. It looks like you did get credit for a bigadv today, but no bonus (standard point value for a P6900 is 8955). Have you had any SMP WUs fail or not complete? I believe you must complete 80% successfully, in addition to completing 10 WU, for the bonus to kick in.

I'd complete whatever WU you're currently running, but then switch back to standard SMP and complete a few WUs and verify you're getting a bonus before going back to bigadv.

I forgot to add.....this machine is a brand new machine I just built....does that matter? Do I have to start over on the 10 SMP WU bonus on a new machine that just started folding? Please let me know cause I don't wanna waste time. :)

I have completed 42 SMP WUs with no % failed on my i5 750 on my other machine.....:D

weird i made a post and it didnt submit

you need a pass key. and add that pass key to your clients and then you need to do 10 wu to get credit

http://folding.stanford.edu/English/FAQ-passkey

thanks...I already have a passkey.....but...I realized the error in my ways.....

When I set up the FAH GPU Tracker on the new machine...I put my passkey in the wrong box (!!!) I put the passkey in my EOC ID box instead of the passkey box. I feel..like a dumbass. Sorry guys....:(

It's crunching a 6900 bigadv unit right now so I'll see if the points add up when it's done :)

Glad you figured it out. Your SMP completions are tied to your passkey, not your machine.

yeah make sure you have 10smp units done so you get credit before you curnch big adv

Just wanted to say thanks for this awesome program!

The gaming pause is probably the coolest feature I think. One of my problems before was I always forgot to restart my clients when I was done gaming. Not a problem anymore.

Need a bit of help though. The GPU client seams to be working fine, but the SMP doesn't. Been running an hour and it's still on 0%

Just tried this program for the first time last night. After doing this for many years, it was nice. It was stupid easy!

Fired this up after making sure my WCG client was stable. Setup was a total breeze. My 920 goes to WCG, but my 5770 and later two 6970's will go to Team #33.

Are you running -bigadv?

Nope. Let it run overnight and it moved a whopping 3%...

My SMP is pulling down a whole 92 PPD on my Q6600 at 3.1Ghz, while my HD4870 is making about 3000 PPD. I'm terribly dissappointed at how bad my Q6600 is doing, but I read somwhere that the 6701 WU I'm getting is really shitty.

If the HD4870 is running on the same motherboard as the Q6600....that might be the problem maybe? I hear the ATI client eats quite of bit of CPU processing power.......I could be wrong though.....

I'm probably going to stop the SMP client. The extra wear and power costs for running it just aren't seaming to be worth it. Maybe take just a short break, see what kind of load the GPU client is causing, and possibly just run a standard CPU client with it instead of SMP.

Um, if youre q6600 @3.1 is at 92ppd you are doing unicore.

My q6600 @2.9 and smp 3 is at 3000ppd on a 6701wu.

I'm thinking there's something wrong. Any advice people can give will be helpful.

Setup running just GPU:

Obviously the SMP is doing something, it pegs my CPU load at 100% on all cores. The GPU appears to take about 25% load per core on average. Still doesn't explain the extremely low points on a Q6600 @ 3.2Ghz. I'll be stopping the GPU today to do some overclocking. Maybe we'll see how the SMP runs with no GPU running at all for a bit to try to diagnose the problem.

I had the same problem when I tried running my 1090T and 5870 at the same time. The 5870 would run just fine, but my processor unit would never move at all. I decided to just not use the video card since the processor units are worth a lot more from what I have seen so far.

Just used this and WOH, way to cool...

The only thing I'm worried about is if you have different machines, will it mess anything up if you don't set up the machine id?

The machine ID only applies to a single computer. It simply allows you to run multiple clients on one PC. It makes no difference to any other computers.

To get the ATI cards going with the 1090t then instead of using all the cores just use 4 cores. I get good results using four cores and twin 4870s. You can't use all cores with the ATI cards.

Have you compared your results to running SMP on all six cores and not running anything on the GPUs? You may find that you actually get better performance that way.

Wow, this program is amazing. I've been home with a broken jaw for a couple weeks now. I finally got bored of other things around the house and decided to get my desktop up and running completely. As soon as I saw this program I had to give it a try as I haven't folded in well over a year. I tossed it on the desktop and got the Q6600 and GTX260 folding in minutes. That wasn't enough so I plugged the Thinkpad in and got it folding, too. I'm getting around 11-13k PPD from the desktop and 1600 PPD from the laptop. Not too bad for less than 10 minutes of actual setup time. It was almost too easy to get that all running so I grabbed the currently unused HTPC to get it up and going along with a spare 8600GTS just to see what I could do. The 8600 kept dropping fan speed on me so I ditched it and the 4850e in the HTPC was only pulling in around 700 PPD initially so I'm not sure if I'll keep it running long term. She's shut down for now, but I'm going to play with it all some more tomorrow. The gaming mode is awesome, too. I made sure to test it out multiple times tonight.

Damn, it's almost 4am. I should go to bed...

I just started today but will keep it going once my i7 is back up and running, I just wanted to see my 2500k before I took it apart. If I would have known how easy it was I would have started earlier. Here it is with my GTX 480:

today after the update, and i started running non bigadv for a while while after the last one finished. I got "1/31/2011 6:58:16 PM" as the time of the WU, even though i just received the unit a couple of hours ago on 2/2/2011, it says my sr2 is getting 11679 ppd on a 6056 :)

an interesting if not excellent program for the fresh start of client(s) [ CPU/GPU ] install(s)

is there a "How To" on already installed clients cpu/gpu already configured and running?

though I must disagree with the option of only using 400/500 series to run the GPU3 client as I use the older 8800GS Alpha Dog series to fold both the GPU2 and GPU3 WU's; takes 6.5 hours to complete a Fermi WU and only using this switch for one of the cards -local -gpu 0 -verbosity 9

also my gpu clients only receive the Fermi WU's when there are plenty, it's all up to Stanford's servers.

client installed = Folding@Home Client Version 6.30r1 console version

Um, I don't get it- I installed it and got it running, verified by 100% continuous CPU usage, but where did it install? There is nothing in the programs list- nothing under C:\Programs...... Nothing in Control Panel programs. If I reboot it's just gone.

Win Vista SP 2

Something's not right, because it is installing to a ....local\temp folder. It runs as long as I don't exit the program or restart the system, at which point the entire program is just gone. I downloaded it with Chrome, if that makes a difference...

Did you just run it from the zip file?

If you didn't extract it to a specific folder, it's probably in a temp directory. You should probably wait till this WU is done and then extract the FAH_GPU _Tracker_V2.exe to a folder of your choosing (I just threw mine on the desktop) rerun the program - it will download the clients into that folder, and re-enter your settings. Otherwise as you say, on a reboot it will likely be gone.

Yeah, I just told it to run from the zip file- but I still find it strange that it doesn't show up in the programs list. I've never had a program (other than a virus- not saying anything about this program- so don't get me wrong) do that before...

dont run from a zip file, unpack it and put it somewhere. otherwise when you have to restart or it crashes, or the power goes off, you will lose your work unit. I just use c:\FAH or d:\FAH depending on if the computer has separate boot/data drives/partitions.

I had to stop using the CPU client as it takes too long to upload on dialup. I have changed it to download smaller units but it sucks on dialup so I stopped. Just using GPU client now.

That's understandable. I think the modern CPU client ignores the big/small setting anyway.

Having a small problem with this. I've always had them all set up manually and it's been fine running SMP console plus two gpu command line clients. With this app, the two gpu clients don't seem to be running on separate cards! How do I force this? There seems to be nowhere to set this manually.

Gave up with it. Got errors reporting a "StartIndex" was less than zero and went back to my classic console clients.

you should have -gpu 0 and gpu 1 flags to control which gpu the client runs on...

but I have not played with such since gpu2 could be different now...
if you don't get it resolved I suggest you hop over to foldingforum.org they will help you get it working.
