Star Wars: Battlefront 2 (2017)

You can also raise the FOV in the control panel. The default FOV is set for consoles and is horribly myopic in 1st person view. ;)

Just remember, DICE uses vertical FOV, not horizontal FOV. IIRC, a setting of approximately 75-78 vertical equals around 110 degrees horizontal view ideal for your average 16:9 1080p monitors approximately 24" in size.

There are a few cases where 3rd person works better, but for the most part I play in 1st person view.

My experience is the same as NukeDukem, game plays way better in first person, just like the previous one. It's not just about the fov. It's a very simple and accessible game series, without any form of advanced ballistics or whatever. First person brings me nothing. Aiming is laughably easy, seeing well around me (and around corners/cover) matters more, also helpful for dodging etc. IMO it is really a TPS, not a FPS. Not that I wouldn't love FPS only servers!

First person is also incredibly bad in vehicles (extremely restricted view in the cockpits) and brings no advantages, unlike in Battlefield games where you have sensors, HUD, crosshair, alarms etc. limited to first person. A shame when you have well modeled cockpits but oh well... I think a lot of us wish Battlefront was simply Battlefield with a Star Wars skin, the reality is reaaaaally far from it though :( I'm pretty sure that would be successful and last for years but they seem to prefer targeting a wider, more casual audience.

How many people are playing this shit? How can I see stats.
COD WW2 is already at 25K on PC.

Deciding between the two.

There are no stats right now for SWBF2. Not even individual player stats (but they said those are being tracked and will be visible later). It's certainly not hard to find a game right now though but actual player count is anyone's guess. With all the drama surrounding it the future doesn't look bright...

Before official release it was a bit slow to find games, showing (I think) that not that many people pre-ordered the expensive packages (like I did) - this was not the experience I had with BF1 or the previous Battlefront for example where I could find games instantly at any time of the day or night. (I had a week off every time and this time too). This is also true of my friendlist, only one single guy bought the game at all this time around and he hardly ever plays.

I do love the game make no mistake. Even more than the previous one. But I agree with some of the points raised by protesters regarding the sluggish progression and micro-transactions so I have a hard time telling anyone to buy it.

I’m enjoying the game and think overall it’s better than the previous one that I logged 70 hours in. The star fighting has been upgraded significantly and it was fun before. No more canned maneuvers - it’s up to the pilot to rid the homing missle lock and the game lets you interact more with space debris to do so. It feels more skill based. I’m overall enjoying the single player so far.

A couple nit picks

Why did the go to the crappy white analogue font and menu systems that aren’t clear and are constantly shimmering and smearing like a bad single. I much preferred the main game interface and font of the first game.

I thought we were going to play dark side on single player campaign? I was looking forward to seeing how they worked that out.
dark side for a couple missions and then have a heart change and switch to light side? Seems a bit cheesy and forced given the narrative, characters backstory, and motivations.

I have historically loved DICE and Star Wars over the years (and I'm old enough to see the first movie in the theaters), and I don't typically pile on the EA hate train unless they truly deserve it... but at this stage I am so sick of that Publisher I think they need to be removed from the business for video games to be able to grow again. They have single-handedly destroyed nearly ever Developer and Franchise I have loved. With their current push to make everything MP with SP only being tacked on begrudgingly, and to make everything monetized, I'm just done with them. I hope DICE gets out from under them before they go the way of Visceral and countless others. They simply do not understand the core industry, or care... for anyone or anything but their pocketbook.
Ironically the things you are complaining about aren’t issues here and the things you say you love are here!!

It has a good single player
And EA removed the monezation

Give it a try if you loved the first Star Wars Battlefront game from 2015, youll likely enjoy this even more. I do.

Honestly this game needs to be completely boycott to send them a message that we will not put up with this bull shit anymore. They even stated that MT being removed is temporary. They just waiting for the heat to die down and slowly reintroduce it again. The game is not omfg so great that it needs to be played. Let it rot into obscurity and in 2 years they will hopefully have a real battlefront game. They been pushing the boundaries to see what gamer will put up and went too far with this game. Don't suppose this game and boycott it.

Well you boycott it outright if you want -- and I'll boycott any monetization purchases - as was my plan all along.

You don't need to buy anything extra to enjoy the game. All Triple A games cost $60 and have for at least two decades. This one cost me $54 through EA Orgin Access (which is a fantastic offering for $30 a year). As far as I can tell I'm not getting any less than I paid for, and I don't expect anything more than I received. Microtransactions or not - it really makes no difference to me - I don't understand all the fuss. Purchase them or don't.

-----------------

EA isn't all about greed...

I think EA is making some good strides with Orgin and EA Access. It's far from perfect and Steam is still superior yes (and yes I wish EA would sell their games in Steam too) --- but EA Orgin Access is $5 a month or $30 for a full year. No minimum month purchase. You can buy it for one month and have access to all the games for one month -- actually most any EA title over six months old. I played Battlefield 1 this way in it's entirety. I wouldn't have bought the game for a full $60, but I got to play it free just a few months after it's release on EA Orgin. If you wait a six months (or maybe even less) you'll be able to play SW Battlefront II on EA Orgin Access too for free with that $5 month or $30 per year access charge.

Not to mention EA Orgin Access rocks for our few LAN parties a year because anyone there can have access to EA's near entire catalogue for a one time price of $5 (with no additional commitment thereafter). They can install any game, play with us, and then turn off their Orgin access after the LAN. Out 5 bucks for 75+ different games - some very new? Excellent. It allows my casual player friends who would not want to pay anything for a game they wouldn't play outside of a LAN - participate in the LAN.

I'm not saying EA is an angel, or that they have no faults - I'm saying they are doing some good stuff too.

Playing a character that's affiliated with the Galactic Empire does not make it "dark side." The Rebel Alliance isn't necessarily "light side." I didn't see it as forced given that operation Cinder targeted an Imperial controlled world, and the place where most of Inferno squad grew up. It's been a common theme with soldiers of the Rebel Alliance coming from the Galactic Empire. It's inevitable after they witness atrocities committed or at least ordered by corrupt Imperial officials and military commanders.

Yeah, because P2W microtransactions exist in a vacuum and in no way whatsoever influence the game mechanics, progression and grind times. You absolutely do get the full game with properly fleshed out mechanics aimed at the best game experience for your $60. Sure, please continue to support this.

Lol. Have fun with deciding. I've been splitting my time between destiny 2, cod ww2, bf2 and overwatch.

Just finished the single player yesterday. It was good, enjoyable. Not an ounce of grind to be found. I’ve enjoyed the multiplayer as well, and haven’t been affected by any grind mechanic. I don’t have the OCD need to unlock all of the thousands of items I’m the game. I’ll be able to put it down when I’m finished having fun, knowing I didn’t unlock all the characters and power up abilities and it won’t bother me in the least.

Also if someone spent a couple grand on loot boxes (if that was an option currently - it’s not) and unlocked every powerup right out of the gate they’d probably command a 20% to 30% edge on a player with nothing unlocked. That edge quickly diminishes as the new player unlocks and crafts the items they want for free that they’ve earned through playtime.
Frankly, I don’t have a problem with that. If someone wants to pay 2 grand to enjoy the game more by having an advantage, they are a fool and it’ll be a short lived superiority - because the skilled players will beat the purchased status players in short order. The first game has this too, to a degree. Want the best pistol in the game? Pay for it. Or play to unlock it. I chose the later.

Whatever the case I’ve enjoyed my time with it so far. - about 10 hours, and look forward to playing it more today. I’ll not have the best gear by any stretch of the imagination - as my playtime is limited compared to those that do nothing but. It won’t be a level playing field - even with micro transactions disabled because I’ll start to lag behind in playtime and unlocks. I’ll still have fun

Is the alternative you guys want?
a) no progression - every option unlocked upfront. IE unreal tournament

b) progression, but just no ability to buy your way to the top, but the progression through skill and time playing to unlock.

You're strawmaning. It's not about getting 100% or most or any number of unlocks/achievements.

I'm glad you've enjoyed it. You would've probably enjoyed it even more if it weren't designed around microtransactions.

Either.

Overwatch plays just fine with no progression.

The fun in a FPS if it's not Singleplayer should just be in skill and winning. I don't need unlocks to keep me playing if it's a well designed MP FPS. I didn't need unlocks in UT, Quake, SWAT, CS, etc. Didn't need them in BF1942 either, and while BF2 had 1 gun unlock per class the gun unlocks were largely meaningless anyways and no one cared.

yeah, this is why I appreciate games like squad in 2017 cause it has no unlocks.

I couldn't agree more.

This is one hell of a Star Wars game! The production is first rate and really authentic feeling. The negative press has really overshadowed a pretty solid piece of Star Wars porn. Campaign is solid and steeped in original trilogy fan service. Starfighter mode is awesome. Progession system is awkward but it is hard not to recommend this game for Star Wars fans.

I grabbed this because I'm a fan of the movies.....

This game is complete garbage. I wish CDKeys did refunds....

Yeah, its pretty, but thats about it.

It's really the progression system and microtransaction aspects of the game that overshadow what's otherwise a solid game. I'm still enjoying it, and see myself playing it longer than I have any of the other recent shooters out there.

The new UFC 3 game which beta has been released this weekend seems to have everything locked behind pay wall with MT and loot box. Guess EA hasn't learned anything. Releasing another P2W game shorty after the entire BF2 debacle.

Surprised I am not.

After about 72hours of mulitplayer play. I can say for sure this game was not pay2win and the cards are not OP and don't determine if you're going to win a fight. I have crafted all my cards for the 2 classes i play up to blue level and my heroes i play as well.

The best rewards in this game are the better guns which don't come from loot crates. Sadly you can buy these in the deluxe edition tho. But that kinda stuff has been around for years. Mulitplayer is a blast imo. Destroying kids in game only to be able to destroy them more with heroes is a great feeling :)

No regrets buying this game so far..

Any of you guys with 4k tv monitors get HDR to work on this game? Turning it on makes my game bright as fuk and washed out. The HDR slider is broke and turning HDR off looks better.....U would think for a AAA title this shit would be working....

Does your monitor support HDR?

I didn't know any 4k HDR monitors that weren't 55"+ in size were out yet. I thought the monitors in the 30" range with HDR support were not going to be on the market until Spring 18

It's a Samsung JS9000. Yes... HDR capable monitors/Tv's have been out for awhile. Case in point, my TV is a 2015 model... See the 2015 Samsung thread on Displays on this forum

I still think Starfighter Assault mode is like the most fun I’ve had in a Star Wars game in years. The Y wing and prequel X wing fighters with the rear turrets are my favorite.

I actually think the flying is pretty skill oriented. Hero ships are not overpowered they are relatively fragile.

Chasing rebels into the guts of a star destroyer or flying into one to knock out the generators is classic Star Wars fun. This was totally worth the 60 bucks the content is pretty good. I can’t believe how bad they screwed themselves PR wise with the unlocks. This is a great game for Star Wars season once you get the hang of it.

This one deserved a better review on the merits of the content itself.

You just have to either grind for thousands of hours or pay thousands of dollars to access all the content! Seriously tho people should not be supporting this or any up coming EA games. Game might be ok but the future of gaming is more important then this one game. We are heading down there towards another video game crash if we keep allowing companies like EA to keep pulling this shit.

Well it doesn't feel like a grind if the game is fun, which Starfighter Assault absolutely is. I should be earning more credits for my playtime. That is my sense. Frankly a bit of a grind is ok because it keeps the community actively playing. There have to be people to play with for the game to be fun. Again, I mostly play star-fighter assault. I don't mind so much that I have upgrades to look forward to because I am already having a lot of fun with what abilities I do already have.

There is no question the progression system is just plain bad--I really don't feel like I am making much progress as I play. I do not feel particularly rewarded for playing. Considering how many fighters I have flown one would think I would have unlocked another card slot by now. It is a grind if you focus on the abilities. But my sense of the abilities at least for the ships is that it is a bit of a trade-off. You can swap in one ability for another but I am not sure on balance if you get an edge. But the core game-play is quite fun. I'd like to see the squad system improved in Starfighter mode. There needs to be more incentive for squads to stick together.

If this were a Battlefield core game, I would be furious, but this is Star Wars holiday movie tie in fluff, and by that standard it is damn good.

The simple fact is this is holding my interest a lot longer than the previous game notwithstanding its deficiencies. The progression system sucks, but I still maintain if you are at all a Star Wars fan this is a must play. You have to assign weight to the actual content of a game as well, and I do think it merits a purchase now that EA has changed course.

Also at a certain point if PC sales numbers are low enough they may scrap future games for the platform and stick with consoles. I am not sure the abstainers are not cutting of their nose despite their face because PC sales are always lower and if this one tanks on PC, we might not see another one.

This isn't just a PC thing. Console players are also causing a out rage. I am ok with grind if it is reasonable. Because they slap on some of you favorite character on a game doesn't make it great and a must play for fans. I like Star Wars but not enough to put up with this bs. No one should either.

My feeling at this point based on my experiences with Mass Effect Andromeda, Need For Speed Payback and Battlefront 2, EA isn't making games for a typical, core, pc gamer. Their audience is not what I would align with and I'm going to simply stop buying their games going forward.

As for battlefront, I'm not a pro gamer by any means but this has been the most painful multi player experience I've had in an online shooter. I've been trying to unlock the 3rd card slot for the specialist class (sniper) and my typical game looks like this:
spawn - run, see somebody, get shot in the back and die.
spawn - run towards front line, die unexpectedly.
spawn - run on top of a roof to try to find something to shoot, die.
spawn - die immediately.
spawn - run to front line - get strafed by an X-Wing, die.
spawn - run to front and manage to shoot somebody and get 1 kill or an assist.
spawn - die immediately.
spawn - run 20 yards, get strafed by an A-wing, die.
game ends.
