Just seen it's out at the Walmart looks pretty decent don't own a Wii U
reviews are pretty mediocre. i think i will skip. still have wii u backlog
Yeah, the reviews i've seen indicate the controls are just about garbage given that you aim by moving the tablet around. There's also too many different modes and ships so one doesn't get a chance to get good with any one before changing.
So the game could be great but hobble it with a crap control scheme and it suddenly becomes "meh" at best.
Give me a Wiimote + Nunchaku .
Apparently, it's kinda awesome in couch co-op. One person flies, the other controls the guns.
I bought it and have played it a bit over a couple days.
1) It does feel like you jump through several vehicles (basically 4 options) in the first couple levels, but that's really just an introduction and after that you're fine. It's almost all the classic arwing which you'd expect.
2) My biggest complaint is the controls -- tilt to aim as a requirement really sucks The "issue" is the right control stick is gas/brake/roll and left is flying, so nothing left to aim with. But it would not be hard to remap the right control stick to actual freaking BUTTONS and use that for aiming. Like at least half this game's difficulty stems from the controls and not the actual gameplay.
Even shittier, you can't even lock out the tilt aim if you wanted the crosshairs to just always be dead center (and require you to steer to aim). They have an option where the reticle doesn't move until you hold the trigger.... but that's the only time you care where it is, so I haven't figured out how it's supposed to help
3) There are also camera angle issues at times. For example, there are cutscenes that happen in the middle of levels where the whole tv screen is taken up with looking at something else... but you're still freaking flying so you have to look at the gamepad (or go to cockpit view and get a shitty mini version of the cutscene) in order to not run into shit and take damage. Another example is at Venom, when there is no option for a camera angle directly behind the ship, yet you have to navigate in circles around a cylinder... from a stupid side view.
It's not all bad. The graphics are cool, it's got a fun nostalgia factor, and, it's not a serious/hardcore where the control deficiencies make it unplayable/unbeatable. The dog fights and "free range mode" levels are pretty cool. But the controls definitely mar what could have been a really fun game by introducing a lot of frustration and aggravation. I have spewed in an inordinate amount of profanity at this game
tl;dr not worth $50 if you have other games lined up to play.
Wow, here I was thinking it was a TRUE successor to Star Fox and Star Fox 64.
WTF NINTENDO!? We didn't ask for this.
