Star Citizen - media blowout, Chris Robert's new game

I'm not sure the single player would have been delivered yet. There is a chance that it would have but the back end assets and tools from the single player make their way into the PU. They have separate teams developing some assets and aspects while some are going to be for both. All things considered I believe we would still be waiting for the single player even without the PU.

I am not against the ship sales, if people keep paying for them that's the on people willing tp spend the money. I invested what I was happy with and really enjoyed the 2.x series and early 3.x. Stretch goals and ships do bug me but I know the team building those is not going to fix server meshing or any of the other issues so its pointless to get too annoyed at it. A bit of solid project management and some dates to get things in place with reasonable movement would do them so good. Keep Chris in creative direction but out of overall control. Not like they cant add more stuff with patching.

Every handful of patches they get a stable release and I enjoy things overall for that release then I follow but don't play much for the problem ones.

Simply put, at this point it is a management issue. You can say technical, but that too ties into management. Squadron 42 was supposed to come out 2019 (for real), then 2020 for beta with 2022 or so for release if I am not mistaken (2 year beta?!). Now we're more or less back to "we have no idea when it will come". Certainly not 2020, even for the beta.

It's never coming as a finished product.

It's like you have Stockholm Syndrome... Chris Roberts is holding you hostage with his promise of a complete game.

It's been a management issue since Chris Roberts got involved.

The game will be out 18 months after he gets let go.

I dont think they could legally get rid of him even if they wanted to. He'd probably have to agree to go.

Why would they stop working on the "game" if they can keep getting people to give them millions for ships. I only see this ending if people stop giving them money.

EXACTLY. It's like with Early Access games on Steam that literally never leave Early Access. The developers still sell copies and make money while suffering no consequences, so why bother?

It only makes sense to worry about finishing when people stop handing them money. Once the game releases, it could be deemed “terrible, save your money” and then they are screwed. Hope sells easier than reality.

So Chris Roberts decided to complete absolve himself of any responsibility and said he would release Sq42 when it was "done," with no time frame.

So SC and SQ42 are both in pre alpha now, so at least 2-3 years away supposedly, which given their history means 10+ years still, so never.

He hit on an incredible business method that should result in serious charges but there is no precedent for it yet.
It "works" that well he's doing it with a second game and far too many fell for it despite his bad previous!
Without being stopped by law he will be allowed to play people for as long as he likes.
There is nothing to stop him, yet.
What an all round waste.

You see what happens when there's no one above him to take control and get the project out the door.

Of course, eventually enough people will get fed up where the finances dry up, the studio closes, and CR will proclaim the game was "done" and would have been out in a month or two, if he had "just" a little more time and money.

You *never* give the idea guy total budget and scheduling control, and this is why. There's no satisfying him, there's always another feature to add or polish. No matter the state of the game, it will "never" be good enough for him to accept and release. As long as CR is in charge, SC or S42 will *never* release in any official capacity.

While I feel that much of Star Citizen's benefit is in its game systems (both existing and designed), I agree they have excellent production values. They also have world class worldbuilding and lore. For those that may not be aware, some years ago many detractors were claiming that it was a waste of time and money to hire linguistic and cultural experts for the game's development. It was a stretch goal and here are some of the direct applications of that investment

Banu Language - https://robertsspaceindustries.com/media/vg5vq01b40voor/source/Rust-Society-Banu-Guide.pdf
Xi'an Language - https://robertsspaceindustries.com/media/9f3kqrtzkslfmr/source/Xian-Language-Overview-V6.pdf

Fully constructed languages both for speech and written systems, internally consistent, and developed inspired by the unique cultures of these alien races. Hundreds of pages long, and with a plan to implement this in the game world in a meaningful way. The design, last as I was aware, was that players can gain access to a UI/HUD overlay program that auto-translates both spoken and written alien languages, at different levels of understanding or specialty content. For instance, a disk for basic Xi'an may let you get around on one of their worlds, translate street signs, allow you to engage in basic discussion etc... but it wouldn't; handle specialty topics like STEM and the like (ie very similar to the real world. An auto-translate will do for basic communication but without special data it will not be able to handle medical terms, for instance), for which you'll need additional disks.

There will also be cultural cues that differ and some better programs may give you some hints to that. However, all of this puts you in the "tourist" category and the idea is that players who take the time to learn some of the language and culture will have a more accurate understanding on a cultural level, which will have certain benefits during things like business negotiations or other missions. So if you notice they use the word for "acceptable" that means "I expect a gift to seal this transaction elsewise I will prioritize it below those who DO give me a gift" , will get a better deal faster compared to those who just clicked "okay" when the auto-translate said "acceptable". That kind of thing. I know some will find this tedious or concerning, but by no means will MOST encounters be like this nor will you have to learn it to succeed in game. However, its just part of that immersive depth - if you choose to engage heavily with these alien cultures, its a good idea to understand them culturally and invest in better MobiGlass software at least, or possibly pick up the language if you have the interest. This is the kind of thing that is inspiring about Star Citizen compared to many other titles and I look forward to seeing it continue to be developed.

Its obvious that the worldbuilding is exceptional and since the beginning CIG has put out a ton of stories and other loredumps. It would easily be possible for them to make a deal with Netflix to create some Star Citizen universe shows, but I'd want their writers and other staff to be focused primarily on the game instead. Still, licensing it off to a competent production team to create something - for instance, if they did the Imperial age of the UEE (during the period of time where there was an all-powerful Emperor etc) or one of the various wars of contact with other civilizations , that could easily provide a "Star Wars" counter. Even their short stories found in monthly Jump Points are typically better than a lot of sci-fi these days on TV.
This post is the perfect summary of everything wrong with Star Citizen.

In a couple years when the money is gone, maybe gearbox can pick the game up slap it together.

I wonder if the money will ever dry up, I saw a post yesterday (which may be wrong) that SC is still making tons and tons of cash, something like a million a month.

Its well beyond that now, at this point SC is so delayed that even if you skipped adding content and went to just finishing what is there, adding some degree of gameplay loop and bug fixing, by the time it would be ready to ship it'll be stale in comparison with new technology.

Add in the insane level of pay to win this project has become and anyone can see SC will be DOA when and if it ever does finally launch.

Star Citizen Now Requires AVX Support, Killing off Intel Pentium Platforms

Starting with the new Alpha 3.11 patch, Star Citizen officially requires AVX instruction support if you want to play the game...this means all CPUs predating Sandy Bridge and AMD's Bulldozer architecture are no longer supported...even worse, all of Intel's modern Celeron and Pentium CPUs (including the latest generation) can't run the game as they do not support AVX instructions...

https://robertsspaceindustries.com/...1/thread/rsi-launcher-update-avx-requirements

I can imagine someone willingly dropping thousands of dollars to back/buy ships while still sporting a 10 year old or super budge cpu.
lol, there probably are people like that!
I was imagining those who put in a minimum stake who arent able to afford much.

Yet-another shit misdirection excuse for the game's poor performance.

"Oh wait, did you not buy Threadripper 64 core?"

There's plenty of multiplayer space shooters that are not so Float-limited that they require AVX!

True, but back when they went to 32bit across the whole system there was talk of not being able to run this on a potato. Not particularly on their side, but this isn't new info (other than an official drop date). I'll pay attention (/care) once SQ42 is on my machine.

i think your comment is 100% on point. it would take them seeking a big infusion of capital and turning to big publishers for whips to get cracking. this is exactly what happened with freelancer. roberts was himself then too, complete with feature creep to the point where nothing was being finished, and it took microsoft's eventual involvement to ensure the game ever saw the light of day. so far they aren't hungry for capital with people throwing money at them for what's essentially concept art and a few written conceptual stats, and as long as that is a reality he will never have any real pressure on him and the higher ups at cig.

The SQ42 update from a few days ago showed that they finished some big station/transmitter thing, which was also shared in March this year during a "Calling All Devs" episode - so sharing the same thing twice now, and added some scripted response from an NPC to show people.

Here's the station, as was shown in March, with much of the foundation already done:

And now - which got comments describing this bit as 'space porn', 'this is the reason why i backed the game', and so forth:

So all in all the big things shared were a station, finished after more than seven months of work, and some dialogue from an NPC. I think one would have to be under some sort of spell to be swayed into confidence on their progress - either by blind fanboy hype or the kind of spell, or curse, where you are just in too deep and clicking your heels and closing your eyes in an attempt to hold on to some semblance of hope. Granted though I didn't care to listen to the better part of an hour of developer banter from these guys and skipped to what they had to show.

Visuals and art are very good... but as I've posted in the past, this is supposed to be a game... or at the very least, a space simulator. Unfortunately, it lost its way years ago and has turned into a glorified, rudderless "Star Art" project... one with no end in sight other than to eventually blink out of existence when its funding finally ceases and all the resources that have been poured into it finally dry up. It'll at least make the Guinness book of records as the most expensive gaming flop ever.
