Star Citizen - media blowout, Chris Robert's new game

Yea, I think this will require a modern rig to play at decent graphics settings. But it's cool to see something really push high end cards!

I'm running a 1080ti, I didn't get the sense that its straining the GPU, only that there is lots of caching/buffering of data from the HDD which is slowing things down.

I've got my original 225gb Intel SSD from 2012 and a more recent 500gb Sandisk, supplemented by my 1tb Raptor. I try to keep games on my SSD, but they have become so bloated in recent years that I cannot have more than 10 or so installed at any one time. The Raptor seems more than adequate for most other games which makes it fine for when I just don't have any SSD capacity left, but I have been meaning to buy another SSD for some time now......just been waiting for a good sale.

I think a lot is still going on server side causing the FPS dips while waiting on network and stuff if I recall older ATV's talking about it. They've been doing some work in that area and will be putting more into it between now and 3.1 after bug fixes. Saw that a bit in the live PTU chat on Spectrum the other night. Not sure if they will get it cleared up or just expand the number of players in with the current set up. Lorien mentioned to my earlier post that the game can be caching stuff on a first visit so it may be a similar issue in some locations.

Hi,
I haven't been paying attention to this game in a while. Was wondering when will they release Squadron 42?

No date on it yet, if you haven't seen the vertical slice demo of part of a mission it's here:

I recommend you also watch this version with commentary from the devs:

They're gonna be releasing monthly updates on the progress they're making (next one is coming Jan 25th), sign up here for the newsletter: https://robertsspaceindustries.com/squadron42
The answer to the question is: Gillian Anderson then you can enter your email

Not to sound like a prude, but people are still using mechanical hard drives for anything besides mass storage?
Yes mechanical hard drives are still the majority of use especially for mass storage. I personally switched to SSDs only last year. I use the 1TB SSDs like the Samsung Evo series. Next build (latter half of next year) I'll move to a 2TB model probably for a primary drive because I like everything on one dive and 1TB is starting to get crowded with how games are getting much larger. For mass data storage though I think mechanical drives are good enough and economical. NAS units are particularly good for this.

Lots of lower end to mid range gamers still don't use SSDs. Or only have small SSDs and cannot fit all games on them. I do have a round of games to uninstall, but even then, I will have most of my 500GB + 750GB SSDs filled space wise. Games are just big these days. BF4 - 70GB, BF1 - 70GB, Rising Storm 2 Vietnam - 20-30GB, DCS World - 40-50GB (plus an extra beta client), ArmA 3 + mods - 35GB or so. And I have more games, an OS, other programs and whatnot.

Right now I am struggling to find a decent deal, at least on par for what I paid last year for an SSD which probably isn't helping. I can pay $140 for a 525GB, but I paid less than that two years ago. And last year I bought a 750GB for $110 from Amazon. Had I known I would have bought another...

Been waiting forever to play 3.0.

Finally got it downloaded. Doesn't launch.
Delete user file. Doesn't launch.
Then wipe everything out because it still doesn't work.
Download all the latest brand new stuff....

Launches to black screen and nothing ever happens.

Ironic?

Time for a little mischief

I started hunting Caterpillars and Starfarers full of cargo as they leave or approach Levski.

Chased this one Caterpillar down to the surface and he crashed over the hangar doors of the outpost.

Started on the upper atmosphere of Delamar, I'm piloting a Gladiator bomber. Ignore the "Constellation Andromeda" name it's a bug from the combat HUD that doesn't properly clear your previous target.

I added insult to injury and did this to his dead ship

Since the ship is dead Air Traffic Control assigned me the pad so I landed next to it

Got out to inspect

Sadly in 3.0 any elevator/door controls are locked to the original owner unless they explicitly unlock them so I wasn't able to get inside the ship even though the elevator door was down

Can't wait until people get more organized and start running proper convoys with escorts for protection and pirates start hunting them in groups.

Oh and on that last picture you can see my Dragonfly is some 800 thousand+ kilometers away. I had flown it from Grim Hex down to the surface of yela and left it there

Nice, makes me wary of Levski now lol. Have not been out there yet, only had about 90 minutes of play time in 3. First server was great, almost a solid 60 FPS the whole time. Till it crashed. The next one was about 28 FPS but stable. Much better than the PTU was though, have only had a few minor studders or hiccups.

Flew my Aurora out to Daymar I think it was, out by the destroyed Covalex hub Didnt have long to play and just wanted to go somewhere. Was in the ship to check out the redone cockpit and my Hornet required an insurance claim since I was flying it when the server died :( (Hope that gets fixed, I got punished for the crash lol).

Radar bug of a glowing orb in my cockpit but it was awesome to fly in low through the dark night and watch as the sun came up as Crusader set behind me. Watching as the planets features appeared was really neat. Was heading out to the Hydroponics facility which was also cool to fly by in the dark. Had not planned on it but bought some cargo there to take back to Olisar before logging out.

Had a few other funny bugs with my ships liking to flip over when landing (315 and Dragon Fly). Game still says I have an Andromeda loaner vs the Aquilla. Love the view from the Prospector but have not taken it out for a spin yet. I think I want to load my Dragon Fly in my Freelancer and head back out to Daymar. Though the rover sounds like fun if I have the right Connie loaner...

Cant wait to try out the rest of the "play" lol. Also not loving the control changes. Need to switch it back to the advanced stuff as its more similar to what I recall from all the 2.0 versions for the most part.

I personally took it upon myself to completely eradicate mechanical storage in my house. Not a single spinning platter left except in my security NVR, but that's RAID, low RPM, and I'm not very worried about ancient historical data in that case, just the previous week or so. The way I handle the decrease in overall storage is to spread it out over several systems, and only back up the most critical of data or hard-to-find items, most of which are fairly static, and can sit on large capacity flash sticks in a drawer somewhere just in case. It works very well for me. I don't have thousands of movies and shows archived like a lot of people though. Just some favorite series/movies that I'd be disappointed if they were dropped from a streaming service or something.

However, I don't think it's quite the norm yet. I definitely agree with the sentiment though.

This game runs like complete ass. In 2.6.3 I was at least able to do everything in the servers at a decent framerate. In 3.0 this game is a slideshow. Not to mention changing all the damn controls have thrown me off. Not impressed in the slightest.

If I had the money to replace all my drives with similar-sized SSDs, I would certainly do so. Cost is prohibitive when a 1 TB SSD is something like 4-6 times the cost as a similarly sized HDD.

I have been having a blast playing, runs good and bashing zombies in the face hasn't gotten old yet.

I have a 256gb ssd and a 1 tb spinner. Yeah. Need to upgrade that just for this game. What is the file size currently?

I don't think all of the servers are on the same page yet. In 2.6 I was around 20 to 25 FPS. First run in 2.0 PTU I was around 20 to 25 until I got to Yela when I dropped to 10 to 15 fps.

First run through on 3.0 I had almost a solid 60 FPS until I desynced and got booted. Second run I had a stable 28 to 32 FPS.

When and where you connect matters. During US primetime (6-11PM central for reference) you want to avoid US servers because they are always full and go instead to EU servers because for them it's 1-6AM and their servers are mostly empty (my contacts list is full of EU and Australian players for that reason).

Lol nice!

I tried to load my Dragon Fly in my Freelancer tonight, ended up with a wanted level and it wouldnt let me control my freelancer again :(
Spawned another freelancer and just flew back to the hydroponics place to see how much cargo I could afford to haul and was quite surprised I almost filled the middle section before I was broke lol.

As I walked out to get in my ship I saw the silhouette of a Saber against the night sky and worried I was about to become very poor, ship-less and dead lol. He strafed around a bit and I pretended I did not see him goofing off with my ship. As I went up in my turret he started taking pot shots at me. I had left my ship powered up which meant I had full shields. Tinkered with the idea of shooting back from the turret when another freelancer showed up that he was escorting.

Decided to see if I could sell the cargo back to the outpost before I was broke but I could not. While I did that the Saber shot at my ship so I figured I'd make a run for it.
As I climbed up the ladder the ship hull started showing a bit of damage and as I got in the pilot seat my front shields depleted. Fired up the engines and rocketed away. He gave chase but I saw a marker and QT'd away as a few missiles locked on lol.

Quickly rerouted to Olisar and landed selling for double my investment. Makes me nervous about going anywhere else to run Cargo right now lol, especially with Lorien out there :p

I saw you online when I logged in the second time after the failed Dragon Fly issue and almost joined but your story of downing Caterpillars .... :p

Some Cutlass combat with a full 3 man crew. I was on the cameraman seat otherwise known as co-pilot. :)

but your story of downing Caterpillars .... :p

As a personal rule I will not attack cargo ships of the working man, I only go for the big boys (Caterpillars, Starfarers), anything below that size I don't engage unless fired upon first. I don't even attack Constellations because they are currently bugged have no missiles (they do but they slip out of the launch pods lol) so I leave them alone 'cause it isn't a fair fight.

Finally decided to apply the Warlock upgrade I was holding onto and tried the ship tonight.

The EMP blast range is a 1Km wide diameter or 500m from the ship (center) and the effects change according to distance as well:
From 500 to 451m = Shields are taken down only
From 450 to 0m = Shield and Power plant are taken down

The blast also has a second and a half delay before it discharges so you gotta time/gauge things pretty carefully to maintain a target disabled.

I haven't tried EMP in atmosphere since this was my first night using it but here's someone using it with devastating results
You don't even have to shoot at them, you simply take out the engines and since theyre caught in the gravity well they crash to their deaths.

Lol nice,

My Dragon Fly is bugged and I cant even see it to spawn in the hanger or in game after failing to get it in my Freelancer :(
I need to get the stupid advanced controls to stick, I'm stuck somewhere between the new basic ones and advanced. Cant decouple, fire missiles, adjust power or shields or anything from the keyboard. Trying to avoid all fighting until that is sorted.

I joined that server you were on about an hour ago for a bit to run some cargo in the Andromeda (should be an Aquila loaner for my Carrack, not sure whats up there). The chat / hud issues make it so I can barely see the chat window at all lol.

My FCA was working the first time I played but the last two days it spawns with no attached weapons and I cannot get in it.

Still having fun with what I can do, only explored the 3 local moons thus far. Need to venture out further soon but want something I can fight in first... Looking forward to the first few patches once they return.

Damn sorry I missed you, didn't realize you were in the same server. Send me a /tell next time you see me in game.

Finally started playing 3.0 yesterday. Outside of server stability issues and a handful of annoying bugs (reported what I could), the game is starting to look and feel like, well, an actual game. Able to complete a few missions and then started to get the hang of running cargo to/from ports and facilities. The building blocks are finally coming to life.

Next up, making life miserable for others in 3.0 and get my criminal status up a bit ;)

In game handle is ZerotheWraith.

No worries, the hud issues make it so I cannot see the in game chat at all. Well, I can see it at size 6 font so its worthless lol.

Had a lot of fun today, basically a whole night that started as a group spreading out through the known ports of call for trading and then setting traps for players and ambushing people. We had over 2 dozen people on Discord coming in and out of game reliably, multicrewing. Here is just a short 5 minute clip.

I had a few bugged servers tonight where there were players but they were frozen or something. All but Olisar's cargo terminals were "sold out" as it were and I couldnt buy or sell :(
Loved some exploration in the Prospector though. Found some new areas to play in when they fix my ships and I get a server I can run cargo from :D

Had a fun rubber banding error tonight that put me back in the Levski landing hold after I had taken off and ramped up to about 300m/s lol, smacked into the wall.

Interdicted by Pirate Caterpillar.

I'm revealing some piracy secrets here as a tip: When engaging a Caterpillar shoot only at the wing. The ship has a bug where the wing doesn't have shields at all and that section is connected to the command module so when it explodes it takes the command module out with it. :D
