Star Citizen - media blowout, Chris Robert's new game

Old Cutlass vs New Cutlass

M1CWKrj.jpg

Wait, I didn't think the UK office was doing the cutlass rework! :p Catching up to the freelancer in size.

Still looking good, looking forward to seeing more, especially the interior.

Pretty sure it's at least as large as the Freelancer now. I posted this a while ago but it shows some of the interior at the end.

I like the look, much better and more in line with what it was "stated" as being. I just hope its not too strong.

Yea- I feel like that fits the description better than before- considering the reworks of the other mid sized ships.

With this in mind (which is a good thing - I've always been happy with ship upgrades including size-based), I'm curious to see what upgrades are made to the Freelancer and possibly Constellation to size them up. Its possible those like the Retaliator may also need an increase, simply because some of the other ships in that price and weight class, such as the Caterpillar and (likely) Banu Merchantman have significantly larger and more complex interiors compared to some older designed counterparts. I'm also curious to see what happens with the Origin 300 Series when it gets its upgrade, as well as possibly some other "smaller ships but with some kind of interior you can move around".

Nice looking Javelin though in the latest post.... I couldn't justify buying one as its really a ship for a guild more than anything, but it is looking great. I'm also curious to see the upgraded interior for the Origin 890 Jump (Said to get some BIG interior upgrades), Polaris, and Idris!

Edit: These kinds of upgrades are one of the things that really sets Star Citizen and CIG apart from most of the industry and show real evidence justifying my faith in the company. Unlike so many others that because of money, publisher meddling, or bad production timelines, basically rush through and when something is finished its just plain done, they go back and upgrade. Some object to the time this takes, but I rather wait and have ships upgraded to take advantage of the larger and more complex game universe as well as better embody the spirit of the ship design and give the player an overall better experience. It also means that long time backers will essentially get more for their pledge than expected - anyone who had a "version 1" Freelancer or Constellation in their Hangar module long ago can compare them to current versions and see a truly massive upgrade.

I can appreciate this full commitment to the "ship fantasy" of each veessel, player experience, and the overal l feel of the game and wish more developers could have such standards.

I guess I have the beverly hillbilly's truck then. Still rocking that starter ship. Do not even know the model name. My plan is to hitch a ride with some competent people and just shoot shit for them. The only thing I will be any good at is blowing crap up as infantry or a gunner. I can't fly. Not even going to try with people like Wildace around.

I doubt either the Freelancer or Constellation are going to get upgrades as they've both already been reworked for the new ship model systems. The Freelancer did grow some for the initial hangar module version, I'm very happy with how it is right now. If they remove the boobs from the DUR version when they get it into the new model I'll be even happier. I can see the Retaliator growing some when it gets reworked,or at least make better use of some of the internal space.

There will always be a need for good marines and gunners. And damage control, medics, engineers, etc... It's part of what excites me the most in this game.

Javelin looking amazing and it certainly looks like it was made larger, the UK team makes everything awesome.

They just published the 3.0 schedule, it should go live at the end of June.

The list of new features and content is way too long to list but here are the highlights:

- 3 moons that we can land on, Yela, Cellin and Daymar, there is a 4th moon Delamar (temporarily relocated from the Nyx system) with the Levski landing zone as an added stretch goal.
To get an idea of the scale of these moons I quote "It takes about four and half hours to circumnavigate Cellin in a Dragonfly at full afterburn or twelve and half days of walking!"
- Cargo and Kiosk systems
- This is not stated specifically but other devs have independently confirmed that Mining should be in 3.0 to go along with the cargo system.
- Subsumption system that drives missions for both players and AI
- Planets/moons with proper rotation and orbit around the local star.
- Character customization tech from 3lateral
- New netcode
- Dynamic physics grid that adapts from sparse areas like space to dense areas like space stations.
- Modular room system to procedurally generate outposts on moons/planets.
- Item 2.0
- A ton of graphics improvements like a new shadowing system, culling, LOD and more that cut memory footprint anywhere from 50 to 100% of the previous versions.

As far as ships go we should at least see the Constellation Aquila to fit the moon/planet exploration theme as well as the MISC Prospector which is used for Mining.

I'm with you. I hope they come out with a "low skill-ceiling" ship that can be flown solo (I'm hoping the new Cutlass is it). As much fun as it is to think about going full-immersion mode with VR and HOTAS, I'd probably rather just kick back with an Xbox controller while flying around the verse for the majority of my time. I've always been more of an infantry player anyways.

Excited to try out my Prospector, and I'm curious if the Andromeda loaner will be swapped for Aquila for those with larger explorations ships not in yet.

Every ship has its own quirks, but a good number can be piloted solo. If your not after dog fighting then you have a decent selection. I cruise around with a 360 controller and if I do fight I use mouse and keyboard. My joystick is decent but for precision its not great.

A similar idea floated around when people who owned other cargo ships asked to get the Starfarer as a loaner when it was released but it didn't happen.
The rule is simple: The base loaner for all multicrew ships is the Connie Andromeda. If you don't own the particular variant being released or any other ship of the same class then you simply don't get it until it's hangar and subsequently flight ready.

Oh there's also an ongoing Free Fly weekend until Tuesday. No codes needed all you need to do is register and if you have a previous free flight account you don't need to do anything except logging in. The free ship you get is the Super Hornet and, of course, current backers automatically get it as well.

Yeah, I'm just curious of they may change it up to get more multi crews /variety down but I'm happy either way. Happy to wait and hope they do the Carrack properly. Saw a fan submission for a tweaked design that split the engines out, redid the gear and it looked awesome while keeping the purpose of the ship in mind. Either way. Give me HUD control back and I'll satiated for a while :D

Oh snap sounds like they heard you Ripskin. They just updated the ship loaner matrix so people who own the largest ships are getting the Starfarer and/or Starfarer Gemini as a loaner.

If you own any of the following ships you will now default to a Starfarer loaner:

890 Jump
Endeavor
Hull C, D, E
Banu Merchantman
Orion
Reclaimer

And if you own any of these ship you get the Starfarer Gemini military variant:

Idris-M
Idris-P
Javelin
Polaris

Still in the archives yay: https://forums.robertsspaceindustries.com/discussion/287430/thoughts-on-the-carrack

Scroll to about the middle of page 1 and you'll see the images of it (first post with actual images outside of signatures). Re-posted from someone else's work.

Overall I love the way it looks and some of the design changes. As that poster stated the redesign was too beefy for an exploration ship, depending on how well the drones function to cover the turrets blind spots the top and bottom ones they did not X over work well or could be removed. As this is more of a go out and explore your on your own type of ship it does need some defenses or a good snub fighter but all those turrets is overkill IMO. The wing launch bay's are a neat idea, pain to land in in a pinch though I would imagine. I like both but it seems like the redesign tried to address some concerns in interesting ways and they made a good render of its look. Tone it down a bit and I like it.

--------------------

Sweet, that's a decent change. Seems like they are trying to align the loaners to as close of a ship as possible. With 3.0 having the military Starfarer's could make things interesting provided they increase the server player capacity again. Might have some roaming fleets to deal with which would be great to test how that plays out lol.

That looks pretty good though they went overboard with the launch bays on the sides and just cramming all kinds of extra functionality for the sake of cramming things in.

God that is sexy, can't wait to draw some folks into a dogfight close to the surface of a moon.

It opens up so many new things like bombing runs on the surface of moons/planets, air support for ground troops/vehicles. You can use a canyon like that to escape a force that outnumbers you which means your superior piloting skills (don't suck) directly translate to your survival.

Imagine what they can do with racing and much much more emergent non-scripted gameplay.

P.S: The new ship loaner matrix is live

Yeah the video is from the personal archives of the actual artist who created it and was probably from a WIP flyby.

I don't follow the game too much just see an occasional video or discussion about it and I don't spend much time in this thread either but I have a question. Are people using joysticks in this game or is it mainly better to use mouse and keyboard? As to a second question if people are using a joystick what choices are there for the consumer? Say like what's the ideal a person can buy today?

Looks like the Banu Merchantman got bumped to 350,. If anyone was keeping up with the $0 ccu game this should be a nice $100 freebee from a redeemer to the biggins

Yes you need a joystick. Also a ton of practice. The pilots are fucking good. I am not going to even try really. The below mentioned Thrustmaster T.16000m has a hotas model and is $110 and should be fine. It is what I am getting. Along with a completely upgraded pc whenever this game finalizes.

I am holding on to my old ass 2500K and 980 until this game comes out. No other game is worth upgrading for imo. Besides, gives me more time to save up and get better tech. This game is going to be a beast to run nicely.

You can use mouse, KB, joystick or anything that shows up as one of those types of devices under windows (pedals, HOTAS throttles, steering wheels, etc.) as they have control remapping available. There are presets for mouse+KB, controller, joystick and HOTAS.

There are good pilots using all sorts of configs. Mouse + KB gives you a bit more accurate aim with an agile ship or gimballed weapons. Joystick centered control schemes let you do more complex manuvers. There are plenty of flame wars about what is best, balanced, etc. but IMHO is mostly personal preference and a willingness to climb the learning curve. I've found a 1-2 hours a night for a week will let me adjust to a new control scheme. I've used mouse+KB, HOTAS (X52-pro) and dual stick (X52-pro stick + T.16000m) for flying and am using dual stick right now.

The Thrustmaster T.16000m is the best inexpensive stick and looks to be about $60 right now. They recently gave it a refresh and raised the price on the new version, the old one used to go for $50 with sales down to $35 fairly often. The reason it's considered one of the best cheap sticks is it has hall effect sensors instead of resistive sensors. Hall effect sensors are more accurate, have less noise and need recalibration less often. If you consider anything under $100 check to see if it has hall effect sensors.

Load up a Starfarer Gemini with as many people as want to come, ask more people to bring their fighters as escort and then fly straight to Yela and trigger the pirates that spawn by the huge asteroids (remember 2 pirates spawn per person not per ship). Enjoy the ensuing mayhem.

This game work with the Vive yet?

No, but there are work arounds for Vive now. I returned mine so I haven't been keeping up with them, but soon after I returned mine there was news that people were able to get SC working with the Vive and Rift.

Okay, thanks spaceman and TroubleMagnet. I appreciate that info and tips. I was hoping that there was some decent budget joysticks in production still. Games like SC should revive these products again I'm thinking.
