Star Citizen - media blowout, Chris Robert's new game

There ya go, those are perfect examples of why you need to make sure people understand they aren't buying ships they are donating money to a concept of a game. You can expect all you want, and your intentions can be A or B but you need to ground yourself in reality.

I'll be honest, I can't wait to laugh and make fun of some the people that pledged a shit ton they couldn't afford to lose or thought that if they donated $50k that Chris would suck their you know what. You should also get to enjoy that, life is to short to not make fun of peoples stupidity. However I have no doubt that is a very small portion of the already very small percentage of backers who go above the normal $45-$60 pledge.

It will also be interesting to see the sales number after release. I'm still not convinced that space sims in the present day aren't still a small market. That was essentially the entire reason for the game being crowd funded, yet it's gone way above and beyond the original monetary goals. They have expanded more of the FPS roles so perhaps it can bring in a larger market.

Some pledge more money than the basic starter package valued at $45 for different reasons.
You pledge extra on Star Citizen's development and in return you get a virtual ship to play with.
Some collect ships and plan to use them with organizations.
Yes it's true that all assets can be acquired by just playing the game.
Some don't have the time to grind for many hours a week and prefer the convenience of having extra assets available.

To be honest I don't really want more ships. I'd rather consolidate what I have into a usable ship to have and then use the rest of the credit for something else in game like a full body scan so I can scare people with my non-Adonis dna or make a NPC of me to be able to hunt down in the verse :)

It felt like they were going overboard on ships after like the 15th one. 3-4 per size class is enough, nevermind trying to balance it. With the amount of customization they're supposed to be allowing with the different modules, just a few basic hulls would have been sufficient. Much rather have a core set of ships designed, polished, and playable across all size ranges than a 5th version of the i300 or hornet.

Surely their art team has other things they could be working on?

And while the FPS thing is cool, I just can't imagine it being the same quality as the rest of the game without feeling 'tacked on'. It makes sense for ship boarding / short term space combat, but actual ground combat just seems like a huge development time sink without much reward.

I can tell you guys why I have pledged the money I have and why I am planning on buying another ship such as the Hull E.

I played EvE online.....for a loooong time. I was there when the first alliances took place, I was there when those big alliances started parcelling space with the finest rare materials, I was there when the T2 Blueprints were awarded through a lottery who made the receiving party's in game billioners overnight.

Moral of the story I have spent a good time in that game and saw how it evolved. Among many other things, one of the things that I was trying to achieve was to get to the largest trading ships in the game.

For people who don't know, in EvE having the money to buy the ship is not enough, you also need modules for it which cost almost as much, sometimes much more than the ship itself, and it requires to be "trained" and have specific skills which are time based and start ticking off automatically on your character as long as you pay the $15 month access fee.

This training for many different ships can be in the order of years. My Obelisk took 1.5 years of in game training (waiting). During that time I grinded bunch of in game money as well and at the end of the training I've got my ship. During the grind I dreamed off using that ship for trading and making massive profits and then take those profits and sink them in my wormhole corporation...and do moon mining and stuff....

You know what happened? By the time I've got the ship, I was done, burned out. It sat in my hangar for a couple years and was used about 10 times.

At this point, I do not want to repeat that same mistake. I am sure SC is not going to have the same time grind that EvE did but still, I neither have the time, nor the interest to do mindless tasks thousands of times just to get to a point so I can do what I want to do in the game.

Thank god since then I finished college and was blessed with a great job, however my gaming time is limited. I can't start grinding missions at 8am Saturday for 14 hours anymore. I want to log in, play 2-4 hours and log off. At this point, I am so much better off spending $500-$1500 upfront and getting bunch of stuff that I want and do only what I really want to do even though internet spaceships may not worth that kind of money in your eyes.

For me...I am just buying time...and time is invaluable.

Hey! That's what I SHOULD have done. But, I dropped out with 15 classes left. Fast forward five years to now, and I just went back to finish....

Moral of the story. Andyk5 did it right.

not sure we will see the real ground based combat for awhile after release, the stuff with tanks (battlefield style) and such wont be at launch. it will be more confined to in space combat and maybe set locations on some planets but hardly open world combat like one would think.

but i do remember them mentioning wanting tanks and other ground vehicles for combat. its just not something they are going to do right away.

and:

3. People who spent significant sums of money and are pissed that the game isn't what they had conjured up in their minds following years of delusional speculation.

This is one that I find really interesting. Listening to people talk about the game and all of things they want to do is starting to get ridiculous. People are projecting all sorts of things into the game that have never been really talked about or confirmed. The feature creep in people's imaginations of what will be possible is starting to get a bit out of hand, even worse than the actual promised feature creep.

All I am expecting is Privateer 2 with a bit of persistence to it. Anything above that is gravy.

Yep. There are people on the official forums that essentially think you're going to be able to do absolutely anything you want, anything you could conceive of, in game as a "career".

I believe much of the intent of RSI supports this though. They seem to be going for a model a lot like when Star Wars Galaxies first came out and a bit like eve. They want a user driven experience where the players create the economy, missions and events. While I don't believe it will be as open ended as people may hope for, I do believe it should have a wide array of possibilities.

I like the Star Wars Galaxies comparison. If they give us that I will be happy. I loved the player built cities and professions like mayor. Setting up your nice resource opp and building a shop with your own npc to peddle goods was awesome.

I suspect you're not going to be happy. I can pretty much assure you they're not going to make SWG + MMO Privateer + FPS + Single player game that could stand on its own merits. Though that (and more!) is precisely what some people on the CIG forums appear to expect. Maybe if they continue to rake in the cash after release, it could approach something like that after five years or so.

What I expect is a fun dogfighting, pirating, exploring, trading and mining space game with some Fps elements. Anything beyond that is gravy.

Honestly I dont care if its total crap I am having a good time watching development and being part of the community. I hope its good and every thing i deamed for but. I think it has more value to the gaming community as a figurehead showing publishers that there is a market for space games, and that sometimes its worth a risk to make a game thats not cookie cutter.

I think there will be a lot of cases of something sounding great on paper, but mind numbingly boring in practice. And other things not very detailed (there is always a limit to what can be done in a single game) where you'll spent 15-20 minutes doing it and then never have any real desire to do it again. Take exploring the dull aspects of your ship. Turning the shower on/off or sleeping will get pretty damn old after you initiate the animation 2-3 times.

As long as the space combat and FPS combat are solid, that is all that matters to me though.

I'm just expecting "better Freelancer" basically. I'm almost certain that the game will meet my expectations.

About Hull A.... I think that I'll swap my Avenger for it. LTI ship for free.

Yeah, that would be a best case scenario for me. Not really what I'm expecting lol. At this point I'll be happy with some good fps action.

New MISC Hull-X series are out: https://robertsspaceindustries.com/...661-A-Hull-For-Every-Job-The-MISC-Hull-Series

They can only be described as iterations (larger/smaller) of the Freelancer

Made a quick gif of the animation on how it deploys/retracts the cargo "spindle" in hauling configuration:

I swapped my Avenger for Hull A for free (good thing that VAT is not applied if you use store credits only).

Man that E is a whole lot of ship, hopefully someone in the org picks one up for some serious cargo runs. as well as some smaller ones.

I'm going to grab it, I just need to figure out if I should melt some stuff or try to quickly sell off my other ships. Damn silver prices are dropping and I'm trying to fight off the urge to drop a few grand so I want to keep my play money free from being temporarily tied up, if is drops another buck I'm a lost cause lol :) I guess I could melt my 890 and repurchase but I don't want to lose it. I don't know what the policy is on those limited # ships.

The HULL C is still pretty attractive looking, although the Banu merchantman may be my go to ship for smaller runs.

Damn guys, I think I have everything I wanted, I basically just need to be able to switch out the Connie and Super Hornet for the Reclaimer and Vanguard and I'm set. I don't even need to sell anything at this point and I have a left over 350R. I guess I do still want that Scythe but that aint going to happen lol...

I think Ben mentioned they are trying to crack down on not unmelting ships for people that abuse the system, so i guess people that are constantly melting to buy a ship then melt it and rebuy their old ship then unmelt the new ship at a later date ect.

i cant bring my self to let my 890 jump sit melted on the slim chance they will not unmelt it for me.

Tho if there was a ship i would be willing to let the 890 ride in melt land for it might be the Hull-E just due to its sheer size, it is a lot of ship for price when you set it next to the 890's price.

I am too close too my spending limit to get the Hull-E tho, since in the end i really want the 890, and i still need to get my small ships in order, and figure out what to do with my other melted ships when i have the money.

The Hull-E really reminds me of the Vindicator from Star Control 2, and that makes me want one tho lol.

if i ever get a hull-e in game i will have to play this while outfitting it.

I imagine you could, but the Reliant (another starter ship) is suppose to come later also. It wouldn't hurt to get this one considering it's only $60, I don't think the Reliant has been given a price yet so it may be less but who knows. You can always melt this one and use credits to get the Reliant later on.

Thinking Hull B since I have $40 store credit. Ive got $145 about to enter my bank account from 315P sale but meh about dropping $200 on Hull C.

Thoughts?

nooo, we lost another slaver  lol

I don't know if we can transport our slaves on the HULL series, maybe they have a special cargo pod lol

I'm really glad to see the HULL D and E, the fact they seem so unprotected makes me smile. I'm glad to see the heavy cargo runners require heavy support if you run through dangerous areas.

Not trying to be a debie downer but does anyone else get the same feeling that this game is becoming way too big/complex for our own good? I was one of the original backers to this game because I've always been a fan of space flight / management sims such as the X series. Every time I look up anything from this game, there’s like 10000 billion pod casts, 1000 billion youtube video updates, 1000 billion changes/additions to what’s going on. There’s like 1000 billion different game packages that change every single day with 1000 billion different items and customization. I completely lost what was going on to the point where I couldn't even keep up anymore with what the hell was going on with the game. I guess this is good stuff that I normally wouldn't complain about and I'm glad it's happening I just hope it turns out well. I've never once been turned off from a game because of “information overload” before but this may be the first time. The game is turning from the passion of 1 man into a multi-billion dollar, multi-national, and multi-studio creation.

I'm with you, if I was going to play I'd need a ELI5 wiki before I started

I am with you. A lot of info and it is hard for me to follow. But I just don't bother with trying Arena Commander anymore. I am waiting until it is finished (or near finished). I'll just hope it turns out to be good and play it when it is ready. That way I won't "spoil" the game either.

Yeah I think it can get overwhelming, the big thing to watch out for is getting info 2nd hand from either the forums or reddit, the news sites, etc... I don't think it's intentional but rather people taking something and building off it from their own internal views or hype.

The amount of info coming out is to much for me to bother with most of it. I don't really play with the alpha other than seeing what kind of progress they make with flight modeling and weapons once or twice a month. I'd rather wait to play the beta or even the final product, so much can change I don't want to get use to something only to have it "nerfed" or "buffed" or tossed out completely lol.

I'm not sure that this is a bad thing for Star Citizen, but who knows, they are doing something no one else has done before. I'll just sit back and enjoy what I can :)

Hull D size

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=65TxXOb0cKU

The Hull E is almost 78% larger hahaha what the hell am I going to do with the E?

I don't know guys, my body says I should get the E but my brain says the D may be big enough. I guess and HULL E with an Idris escort would be doable for some big org runs.

Get the E, it says its super module, you can load up weapons on some of the cargo hard points to arm it more at the cost of cargo capacity, so it has the potential to be able to carry more goods than the D while also having more weapons for defense.

not sure how running costs are going to play out, but at least you wouldnt need to pay to re-insure that mammoth hull.
