Actually did load it up and play it. IF they can continue with what they are doing, i think it may turn out okay. Did like the sense of scale when near large objects and it was playable for me. Time will tell....

Have they fixed how awful just walking around is yet? And the jittery terrible performance?

I'm not even really bashing the game. I want to play it, but the jittery frame rates on a rx580 8gb and the fact that walking feels stupid stupid stupid slow make me uninstall this game every time I fire it back up.

It still baffles me how a game can mess up simple movement as bad as starcitizen.

when you spawn you're stuck in slow walk mode, mouse wheel up to speed your character up.

Performance is fixed on the PTU server. Even on a heavily loaded server I got 30FPS+ in Port Olisar. Once I leave the area I'm at 60-90FPS, no stuttering anywhere.

I wonder if I unbinded that years ago for walk speed.... I'll have to go back and try that.

Completely forgot about this game. Haven't there been lawsuits involving the CEO or something?

Yeah they are still in court with Crytek over license misuse with the Amazon Lumberyard switch or something along those lines.

The PTU does run a lot better now. It's giving me FPS in universe around 40-60 instead of 15. Huge difference. Seems to be more missions, places to go, things to do. Still has a garbage UI but at least it's playable enough to notice things like that now.

    1. Based on the state the project is in, decades is more appropriate than years. It's one thing that you'd lie to yourself, but don't lie to others. I'm not saying you're lying as you don't have the facts. The lying is already done, you (meaning fans) just repeat the lies.
    2. No, it is my professional (and very generous) assessment based on observing the progress they made in the demo, which I check out every 6-8 months to be amazed appalled. Supported by years spent with VFX and VG professionals, and myself having some experience with coding and designing games, although I haven't been doing that for years. Which might change, as there is an emerging convergence between my current profession and the VG industry.
    3. It's not a common number but it's not unheard of either. It is a point where you can't afford to admit defeat, you must keep the fire burning or admit your utter stupidity of giving away that money for concept art.
    4. I've seen them, and they don't fit my definition of fun. They were terrible, barely tacked together garbage for the most part. If you take cryengine sdk, two artists and a coder, they can come up with star marine in approximately 2-3 months.

And that last fact is the worst part for me. Because I see the project for what it is. And it is so frustrating when fans like you are so misguided that they think this is the most revolutionary game ever, and what cr&co are doing is really ground breaking.

I'm afraid you have that backwards. I for one feel terrible for giving them any money at all. And not because of the lack of progress, that was always a gamble. But for how they're spending the money, mostly on PR, lies and vaporware, and for how unprofessionally the development is handled.

I don't find the development process unproffessionable personally but the biggest factor why the game is in the situation it is now is that the game has like 10x more technology than your typical game, it really wants to be able to support just about everything that's needed to simulate a real world experience, it really goes far when it comes to microdetails and I keep hearing only more and more technology is in the work as the project is worked on, it seems like a never ending story as Chris has put the bar so high for how many features he wants in the game. At some point you just have to say, look that would be cool to have and all but let's just finish what we already have going.

My biggest criticism regarding the development at this point is how far behind basic gameplay mechanics are, the gunplay for example, horrendous! It's not anywhere near a modern FPS gaming title. There's very noticeable lag when shooting, there's an obvious lack of "impact" feel to it when shooting (comes down both to sound, firing animations as well as animations on the target side of things that are subpar at the moment). Not to mention the AI...

Almost everything in the game is developed to placeholder level, or worse. and you don't find that unprofessional? In a project 6 years into full fledged development? "mircodetails" That's a new BS word, haven't heard that before.

That's exactly the lies I'm talking about. There is no "10x more" technology in the game. Don't believe that for a moment.

LOL, the kraken is going to cost thousands. "Extremely limited supply" "Premier event" "one per person!"

Congratulations. You have been selected for Wave 7 of our exclusive Kraken premier event. Due to an overwhelming number of applicants, an extremely limited hull supply, and the importance of game balance in the universe, availability is at a premium. Kraken pledges are limited to one per person.

This is no simple ship, it's a game changer. It's not for everyone. To captain a Kraken is to captain the future itself. But you have the rare chance to prove you're up to the task. That you will use this formidable dreadnought as a positive force to secure a brighter tomorrow for us all. Ship Q&A will be posted before the end of the promotion.

Your wave begins Sunday October 21st 00:00 UTC. It continues through October 31st at 06:59am UTC. Pledging options are first-come-first-serve, so if you want to captain the helm of a bold and hopeful future, get in now.

    Respectfully,

I'm on Wave5 talking myself out of melting a whole bunch of smaller ships to get it since I already have an Idris-M for the org which is a far better military ship.

Besides, we will very soon be able to both rent and outright buy ships with in game credits and it'd be cool to work as an org towards one of those (tho I fully understand the desire to personally own one and avoid all the potential conflicts that come with shared ownership)

    Kraken Q&A:
    https://robertsspaceindustries.com/comm-link/engineering/16813-Q-A-Drake-Kraken

And they also answered questions live during CC:

Main points against the Kraken vs Idris in my book:

    - Can't equip military grade components, only industrial and civilian grade. Idris comes with military grade components.

    - Far less armored than Idris, described as "paper thin" by the devs.

    - Nothing anywhere close to the Idris' anti-capital railgun.

    - Ships landed on the flight deck are totally exposed and vulnerable. Destroying them will cause damage to the Kraken

Ignoring all of that and considering that you will always want to fly large capital ships with a full support fleet around it, the ideal solution is to have an org fleet with both lol.

I love people that state their opinions as "facts". If you don't think it would be ironic for someone to purchase a game they've bitched and complained about ad nauseum for years and after praying for a developer to fail, that is pretty laughable.

Uh, yes it does. I've done most of that myself. THAT IS THE POINT. No other game even comes close to what you can do in a pre-alpha tech state of SZ. That says volumes.

If you are a "professional", you must be very bad at your job. Someone who has "some experience coding and designing a game" (probably as bit of embellishment there), is critiquing the most ambitious and difficult game project easily by an order of magnitude over anything else before it. 5 years of development for such a massive undertaking is nothing.

Arena Commander alone is easily the best space combat simulator ever. Hardly terrible, tacked together garbage. But let me guess, you are one of those "professionals" who watched a 3 minute video on it.

So tell me, if SC isn't groundbreaking, what other game can I start walking around in a space station, interact with other players, NPC's and the station, jump in my spacecraft, depart the space station, fly out into space, do ship to ship combat with another spacecraft, warp across the system to a moon, enter the atmosphere, fly around the entire moon, land on the moon, get out of my spacecraft, have first person shooter gameplay with other players who have also done everything I just said up until this point, hop back into your spacecraft, depart the moon's surface, fly into space, fly to a satellite, depart my spacecraft on a EVA run in my spacesuit, EVA inside the satellite, interact with the computer terminal, EVA back to my spacecraft, warp to an asteroid belt, mine an asteroid, get attacked by a pirate, warp back to the space station I started, land, walk to the bar for a drink. All with many other players in the universe, with no crashes and no loading screens, and you can do it RIGHT NOW.

Ya, NOTHING ground breaking there... Tell me the game that comes even within a mile of that and I'll start playing it.

Yeah, only your opinion is a fact, right?

It is all suspended in a void. There is nothing to do in the game, apart from try out a few mechanics, that are in of themselves aren't groundbreaking at all. And most of these mechanics are developed to placeholder level, and not polished enough.
I don't give a crap about being able to get into a ship without a loading screen. That's exactly the problem with the project, they waste time on features that aren't important. Instead of edging closer to a finished product, they introduce new "features" all the time.
If you can't see that as a problem, then I'm sorry to say you can't see the forest from the trees.

Yeah, and you base that on what?

LOL, so you as a complete outsider to development can tell, that the game is on the right track. And everything they say and do is 100% gold. But me because I choose a different profession than game development after being in it for a year or so, with friends who are still active at AAA devs, I can't possibly have any idea on it? Are you seriously saying that?
I knew SC fans are deluded, but this is a whole new avenue of invented reality.

Again, based on nothing but your feelings. How can you judge that it is actually massive? And how can you measure that 5 years is nothing? I'm telling you 5 years compared to the progress shown in the current alpha is an eternity.

I don't even have to guess because you just demonstrated that you're the type of person who doesn't even fully read or understand someone before trying to smear them:

Let me see, Star Trek Online? Walk around in a space station, check, get outside, check, fly around check, do ground battles, check, do space battles, check. It was a garbage game imo, but that's besides the point here. At least it was a game, and not a tech test platform which SC is currently.

I've seen your precious space station. It is a ghost town, I don't even recall seeing any npcs. A few placeholder characters here and there. Both the mining and the flight part is typical of a project in it's infancy. I've seen how a game looks like 1 months and 2 months into development, when you start throwing in features, on top of each other, without any of them being fleshed out. That's exactly how SC looks like now, after 6 years of development. It needs at least two times the work they already put in to make it into an actual alpha. IF THEY STOP ADDING FEATURES RIGHT THIS INSTANT. I've been telling this for years, but nobody wants to hear it.

I'd be the happiest if the development was on track, I WANT IT TO SUCCEED, I WANT AN ACTUAL GAME. But I don't see that happening.
Your problem is that you think that anyone who criticizes the development wants it to fail. So you assume ulterior motives in their arguing. But that couldn't be further from the truth. I have over $200 invested in the game, I want it to succeed, and I want it to be good. But wanting something isn't enough to make it true. The truth is that this project reeks of mismanagement, and I'm angry and disappointed because of that.

And fans like you encourage them to continue down the same path, where the end is a tiny speck in a distant uncertain future, and there is no finished product to be found there.

What part of that wasn't true?

I'm not praying for CIG to fail. They already have failed at making what they've took the money for and they can happily continue on for years milking the whales for all I care. If SC ever comes to be and is any good as a game (both of which I find improbable), why wouldn't I buy it? It's a double win for me: I got to laugh at people's greed, stupidity and naiveness for years and got a game at the end of it. But let's be clear about one thing: even the miracle of SC coming out and actually being worth anything wouldn't make up for all the shit CIG had pulled these years. They deserve all the shit they're getting and nothing will change that after the eventual release of anything.

Other games are completed at that time, but SC does a couple of unique things and it's to be praised? And I'm being generous here, SC doesn't actually do anything as it doesn't exist. There is a tech demo build that has bits and pieces of a game. Any game developer could put out anything SC can do at this point in fraction of a time as it is the game as a whole that is complicated, not a feature here and there.

I have had an ambition to be an astronaut since early childhood and I'm several decades into working on that ambition.

The competition is staggering in that department. Let's see how many have tried in the past decade...1?

Should I list all the things you can do in all the games out there that you can't in SC? There are probably a million, maybe a billion of them. I guess that makes them that much better too. Should I google for a tech demonstration that does some unique thing in a 3D computer environment? Guess what, it would have two things in common with SC: it would have a unique feature and it wouldn't be a game.

Star Trek online? Loading screens don't mean anything? SC does a couple of unique things? Wow, the technical and development challenges of designing this game universe over what currently exists is completely over your peoples heads. I've heard about the SC trolls and not to engage with them but this is truly laughable and a pointless waste of time.

Just one question, how do you convince yourself that I'm a troll, and I'm lying about having $200 in the game, about having experience with game dev, and about friends at AAA devs?

I installed this again - wanted to see what the current status was. Definitely have added a lot since I last played, but the performance for me is god-awful. I've seen other people running better, is there something I'm missing? I'm talking constant stuttering and sub-30 FPS most of the time.

Other than that, I wish there was a way to travel to planet surfaces faster. Even when you Quantum jump as close as you can, it still takes forever to fly down to the surface. Either that, or have some sort of auto-pilot to the nav locations. Currently it's a bit tedious.

I also wasn't able to find any missions or contracts so there really wasn't much to do. Kind of ran around for a bit, flew around for a bit to a couple different planets, then got bored when I couldn't figure out what I was supposed to be doing.

Yeah, the people you see with high framerates are in the PTU, testing the upcoming OCS stuff. It's supposed to have a dramatic effect on client framerates, and allow much higher numbers of players per instance (AFAIK, could be off on this)

The massive performance gains are in 3.3 which is currently in the PTU and is open for everyone. Go to your account settings and copy your account over, you will get an email with a download link for the PTU launcher(separate install than the regular game launcher), run that launcher and it will download and install the PTU (separate install than the Live game).

    7tGOlIq.png

After jumping to a moon spool the quantum drive again and all the outposts marker will light up. You can then calibrate and jump directly to them (you end up about 20-60Km away) just like when you jump to a moon.

You can even jump to outposts that are on the opposite side of the moon

Missions aren't replenishing often in 3.2, that has been for the most part fixed in 3.3 with plenty of missions being offered. There will be occasions where on a full server the selection will be rather small because other people snapped them up but new ones pop up eventually.

Edit: Also missions are tiered and offered according to your reputation (where you are in the lawfull/lawless scale) where initially you are only offered tier 1 missions that are very simple and pay low 9this is how everyone starts). Then as you complete these tier 1 missions you are offered intermediate tier ones that pay a little more and then the highest tier that pay the most.

Some of the more extreme outlaw missions encourage you to kill anyone you see in sight as a way to distract the system security forces.

    vuJzfoN.png

    OGLFGna.png

    YGy2k7b.png

Worth noting is that there are other mission categories that have more ntermediate tiers, some have 4 or 5.

Also depending on which missions you complete you will also be contacted by a mission giver NPC that will offer "trial" missions that if you succesfully complete ends up unlocking him permanently for you.

Here's one from RUTO the lawless/pirate mission giver

Cool..I downloaded the PTU and stuff, game stuck at the Loading screen trying to load into an instance. :(

EDIT: Forced closed the game and went back in, working this time. Still a lot of stutter but performance overall is WAY better.

EDIT 2: Took a mission, went to the waypoint and nothing happened after the time counted down. Stuck at 0:00. Couldn't turn off my ship, couldn't exit, couldn't do anything other than fly around. Couldn't bring up my mobiGlass for more than a split second. I guess it bugged out on me. :(

Tried that, didn't make a difference. I've noticed that about half the time when I get to a loading screen, whether it's to get into the game or back out to the main menu, it will just get stuck and force me to kill the process.

I really want to like this game, and what I'm seeing so far seems really cool and promising, but it's just far too buggy and glitchy right now. Also seemingly a huge amount of network lag as well. Most of the time when I try to bring up my mobiGlass it just lags horribly and only works about 25% of the time. Weapons and items seem glitched and may or may not work.

Going to definitely leave the PTU installed and keep up with the updates more. Performance in the current PTU is miles above the normal server so that's going in a positive direction. I wouldn't say it's overall where it needs to be performance-wise, but it's an improvement.

How anyone can say this is not pay to win still is nuts. If this ever comes out on day one you will have people flying around in the largest ships. Just think if eve back in the day did this where you could buy dreds and carriers and what not.

The redefined what pay-to win means. They say everything you can pay for can be attained by playing the game: Therefore not pay to win.

That's always been the argument for/against "pay-to-win", though. Unless the game has items that specifically give an in-game advantage and are ONLY obtainable via real currency (not in-game), the argument is made that it's not "pay-to-win".

I care more about how much time and effort it would take me to earn the items using in-game currency. In the case of Star Citizen, given the price of the ships, I have to assume the grind would be tremendous.
