I just got a new Samsung 50" TV, and until I have my HTPC finished, I plan to have it hooked up to a regular standalone DVD player. I see lots of units that have a USB port that will play music or pictures, but don't support playing Divx movies off the drive, it makes me burn them to DVD. Is there a unit out there that I can hook an external USB drive up to and play movies directly from it?

Phillips DVP5990/37

That should do it (though its backordered). I got it specifically for the upconversion and USB port. I've tried it with a USB stick and it worked great (played a few downloaded fansubs off it), I haven't tested it with an actual external hard drive though.

One word of warning though, Phillips is not a particularly reliable brand name. My mom actually warned me about that, but I didn't pay attention. The player failed recently after only a handful of uses.

I have a Philips DVP5960, and it will play AVI's off a data CD or DVD, but not off the USB port
