I have a unique configuration with one of my customers.... the router is beyond my control, I have to send emails to justify any changes like opening a port for an app. They have a single computer in a common area and they want to lock it down to block porn, Facebook, etc. We also need to be able to add sites to be blocked. They also have a lot of custom apps that communicate to the local subnet and the internet that can't be blocked, so I need to be able to whitelist IPs.

So the typical content filtering stuff, like Sonicwall, Untangle, etc. are not the solution on this one. Not even sure OpenDNS will work for this use.
I'm thinking the best bet may be some kind of parental control software like Net Nanny.

Any suggestions?

If you can change the local dns on the client's computer then you can use OpenDNS

I too would start with trying OpenDNS. Just make sure the user account can't change the settings. If that doesn't work then look at an installable software solution.

BlueCoat K9 would be a good choice for local lockdown, but you can't administer it remotely.

I thought of that, but then how do I make changes?

I suppose I could do HOST file entries to point Facebook to 127.0.0.1 and stuff like that.
I guess I'd also have to do HOST file entries for local resources that OpenDNS will not resolve.

uhgg.....

Thanks for the pointer to K9 boss99.
