Square Enix CEO Yosuke Matsuda Thinks Games Shouldn't Be Fun

At least among gamers it is very stunning and unbelievable to hear someone not recognising a character from one of the MOST talked about RPG game of the last two decades and a game that is also often found on the "Best games ever made" lists. Okay, they are not Mario level of famous characters but... god damn dude!
Do you know my little pony lore too? It has been around much longer than FF, if you are interested in anime you couldn't have just avoided it!

I'm not familiar with supermario characters either, OK, I know Mario and Luigi exist, that's about the extent of my knowledge.
Just as I'm not familiar with any Harry Potter characters, because I'm not interested in the books or the movies.
Anywho, there is no FF timeline. They are all their own games in their own worlds and at most share a few features like couple of mascot animals etc...
There is no obvious entry point to the franchise. The older games are outdated, even their remakes. And if I ask any fan which game should I start with, they'll all give different answers. Every part seems to have some haters as well as devotees among those who consider themselves FF fans.

I tried FF once asked fans which game should I get and I ended up buying VIII Remastered, but I Have no idea how that is remastered as it'd look outdated even if it was 1992 not 2022. The controls and mechanics and even the graphics are worse than Legend of Kyrandia. So that was a waste of money.

No, but I know a My Little Pony when I bloody see one. And just as you I am not familiar with Harry Potter as I have not seen a single movie nor read the books, but I know who Harry Potter is and would recognise his face anywhere. This is exactly the point, I would assume most gamers to recognise Aeris too, considering how famous her fate is in the game.

When you ask what FF game should one start on and compile all the answers there are usually two choices that come out at top: either 6 if you are into retro 16-bit games or 7 if you are not. They are old and ugly but unless you are a young graphics oriented gamer I doubt that is a huge problem, they still have the best story and characters in the serie. Not sure how you ended up with 8, that is quite mediocre with convoluted gameplay with all the "drawing" and linking magic to your stats etc... The game has its fans but it is not one of the big ones. And as you noticed, the remaster was a misnomer. The game was simply compatibility patched (they are very old Windows games after all) for modern systems and few filters added on top. Yeah I can get the same result with PS1 version via PCSX emulator... Final Fantasy 10 is very divisive. There are a lot of diehard fans and I would understand if that is where you might have started from but personally I hated that game, second worst FF game right after 13.

Meh.. the FFVII remake was lukewarm, and the last game they had that really was worthwhile was FFVII... >20 years ago.

I'm just going to continue buying games that I play for fun, not made by SE.

NFT's are a joke. Ubisoft tried this recently and got clapped.

The difficulty does not lie in recognizing the franchise, but in naming one particular character. I could've guessed that the character is from final fantasy, but nothing beyond that.
As for harry potter you'd recognise the actor's face, because it was plastered all over everything you couldn't avoid it if you tried. If there were no harry pottter live action movies would you still recognize him in an artist rendition?

You are just proving my point as I got recommended VIII and X/X2. There is no consensus even among fans, so how should I find my way as a complete noob? You already listed two games that you hate that others might love.

But unless something has changed in last few years there IS a consensus, 6, 7 and (to my chagrin) 10 are universally considered the big FF releases. And I am not talking about if I personally like the game, I am just talking about the most FAMOUS entries in the franchise.

Ashton Kutcher was on a show called "Punked" back in the day, Im saying I feel like Im on a hidden camera show.

Are you for real not familiar with FF at all? I've literally never played FF7 and yet I know the story and most of the characters, it's just one of those things you absorb from the gaming collective consciousness for such an iconic title.
I'm not familiar with it either. I would recognize a couple of the characters as I've seen enough artwork online and I had friends who played it back in the day. But I can't tell you names or anything about the story.

Most developers have forgotten that gaming was supposed to be fun. I stopped playing Doom Eternal because it wasn't fun. Hell I think I stopped playing Doom 3 because it wasn't fun. I bought the Halo Master Chief collection on Steam and I'm playing the crap out of Halo 1 because guess what?!@? IT's FUN.

Examples? Ive never in my years on this earth heard of any game and/or series of games referred to as a "western centered" games. If you are referring to stuff that just "isnt japanese" then basically the entire world likes that stuff, not just "western" cultures.

I cant even begin to fathom how nobody you know has interest in anything:

Bandai Namco
Capcom
Konami
Nintendo
Sega
SNK
SquareEnix
Tecmo / Koei Tecmo
Atlus
Sony
Zarathustra is our resident curmudgeon. Don't mind him.

Saying the title is misleading would be putting it lightly, simply read the original without some click bait ridiculousness over it (why ?):
https://www.hd.square-enix.com/eng/news/2022/html/a_new_years_letter_from_the_president_2.html

How does one start from:
I realize that some people who “play to have fun” and who currently form the majority of players have voiced their reservations toward these new trends, and understandably so. However, I believe that there will be a certain number of people whose motivation is to “play to contribute,” by which I mean to help make the game more exciting. Traditional gaming has offered no explicit incentive to this latter group of people, who were motivated strictly by such inconsistent personal feelings as goodwill and volunteer spirit. This fact is not unrelated to the limitations of existing UGC (user-generated content). UGC has been brought into being solely because of individuals’ desire for self-expression and not because any explicit incentive existed to reward them for their creative efforts. I see this as one reason that there haven’t been as many major game-changing content that were user generated as one would expect.

However, with advances in token economies, users will be provided with explicit incentives, thereby resulting not only in greater consistency in their motivation, but also creating a tangible upside to their creative efforts.

And possibly read: games should not be fun.....

I am pretty sure the creators of content incentive will pay to be paid with how popular what they created become (i.e. how much funs they are considered to be by the mass)

Studio reservation over users made content is 2 fold, an obvious one of sometime hard to directly monetize for them when not a competition to their own potential future DLC and a second one being brand control (hardcore porn mod for Nintendo title will always be something they would prefer not to get too popular)

This could get rid of the first major issue for them

This is what I read. I never read any third-party take on the letter. I don't know how one cannot interpret it other than "games should not be fun." "Play to contribute" is just a nice way of saying that gamers should be working for the publisher instead of "leeching" off of their entertainment product like it has worked for the past four decades.

And who play the not fun created content ?

It is saying that some players like to contribute (and some would if it would pay) and it is a good strategy to lever that to the studio advantage, how does that follow that the content created by those people should not be fun (and what the game start as to attract them ?)

Would one read Google strategy to incentive content creation by users by concluding that the content on youtube should not be fun to watch ?

To back of Zarathustra[H] , while I have heard everyone go nuts over FF7, I couldn't name a single character and I have never played it. The last FF game I played was FF2, which I think was on the SNES.

The type of game doesn't interest me. Kinda in the same ballpark as Metal Gear Solid. Never played it. Same as Splinter Cell.

Asian specific or sneak specific games aren't for me. Not sure why having a preference is so odd to you guys.

If you don't know, then why even comment on the picture in the first place? With a snarky one, at that?

Well, someone else referenced the game. Maybe that made him look at photos? Who knows. Mind you, if you took some sort of offence or feel it's snarky that he thinks the main character looks like someone, maybe the issue is in your ballpark, my friend.

Gamer for 40+ years (Jesus I’m old!) and also completely unfamiliar with the FF series. Too many games and to little time to check out something that doesn’t interest me.
Exactly. I do remember trying out the game when it first came out for PC as everyone raved about it, but I couldn't get into it and that was it for me. Most people I know that were gamers loved it, but I couldn't be bothered to learn more about it or pay any attention to things said about it.

WHAT?!?!?! HOW DARE YOU!

I could name about 100 games that j don't know the characters to. Let's take quake. It's one of my favourite franchises.. to play. Not to lore search. I don't even know the name of ANY of the main characters. I've played the games for decades. So not knowing the name, or being able to recognise a character, from a FF game shouldn't be that crazy lol

Another note... How is it so weird that I don't recognise a character from an Asian themed game? They all look the same. So if someone put up an anime girl, I would attribute it to people enjoying drawing Asian girls, but I wouldn't attribute it to a game.

Remember horse armor?

Remember Steam allowing paid mods?

We did this to ourselves by continuing to buy and finance this bullshit and only crying about it while handing them all the money they asked for

No shit they're gonna keep finding ways to ask for more

And people will pay, so it will get much worse than this

How could you not know the Ranger, Shambler, Vore, Chthon and Shub-Niggurath?

Who is talking about them? I've never heard this talk.

I think it really depends on what circles you hang out in.

Since I generally have no interest in anime, fantasy, or RPG type of games, I don't usually seek out information about them, and despite being heavily into games for ~35 years I don't recall ever being involved in a conversation online or in person when they came up.

I don't recall what I was playing in 1997 (Probably GL Quake, Quake II, the first Tomb Raider and MDK?), but I don't even think I had heard of the Final Fantasy series back then. I went through 1997 blissfully unaware the Final Fantasy Series even existed until in 1998 Half-Life came out and completely revolutionized gaming and kind of sucked up all oxygen in the room, followed by Counter-Strike and Deus Ex in 2000.

Everything from 1998's Half-Life and on was dominated by first person story based games and online first person competitive games for me. There was no time to even think about any other genre/style of game, except for the occasional return to Sid Meier's Civilization series.

If I had to create "a brief history of important games since the early 90's" Final Fantasy wouldn't even be on it.

It would look something like this:
Various Platformers and Sierra-styled Adventure Games -> Wolfenstein 3D -> The Dooms -> The Quakes -> Half Life.

Then Half-Life changes everything and becomes the most influential game of all time, after which the line splits into multiplayer vs single player.

On the single player side the Deus Ex team takes the concept Half Life originated and runs with it, making it even more deep and complex and adds some light RPG elements. Between Deus Ex, Half Life and Half Life 2 they essentially influence all single player story based games, including Crysis, Bioshock, etc. until the emergence of open world titles like S.T.A.L.K.E.R and Far Cry 2, which become the basis for countless great open world single player FPS games with minor RPG elements.

On the multiplayer side of things, Counter-Strike grows out of the Half Life engine and influences just about every competitive multiplayer game going forward, both good titles, some great titles (Red Orchestra Series!) and some generic Call of Modern Battlefield nonsense. At least until the emergence of all the "Battle Royale" garbage, but even that can loosely be traced back to elements of Counter-Strike on some levels.

And that's essentially gaming in a nutshell from 1990 to ~2008. Everything after that is influenced in one way or another by this.

When I think of games since the early 90's, I don't even think of anything outside of this. No Final Fantasy, nothing Kojima, nothing RTS, nothing out of Japan and nothing RPG, Fantasy or Anime based. They simply occupy none of my thought process about games.

Can you name specific My Little Ponies though? That's essentially what you are expecting of others when you are shocked that they don't recognize Aeris.

It just kind of looks generic Anime based to me, and I can identify it as such, but not enough to recognize individual characters.

Harry potter is different. I too have not read any of the books or seen any of the films, but that shit was marketed to oblivion and plastered everywhere and anywhere. it was impossible to avoid. I don't think the same can be said for Final Fantasy. I think you had to be intentionally looking for Final Fantasy to come across Final Fantasy. Or at least intentionally be looking for Japanese RPG games.

Since you often point out that you don't play anything that isn't first-person, I am not at all surprised by this.

Those first-person shooters are definitely important and influential, but there are also:
  • Chrono Trigger
  • Command & Conquer
  • Diablo
  • Donkey Kong Country
  • The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall
  • Final Fantasy VI
  • Final Fantasy VII
  • Goldeneye 007
  • Gran Turismo
  • The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
  • Metal Gear Solid
  • Mortal Kombat
  • Pokémon Red & Blue
  • Resident Evil
  • Sonic the Hedgehog 2
  • Starcraft
  • Star Fox 64
  • Street Fighter II
  • Super Mario 64
  • Super Mario Kart
  • Super Mario World
  • Super Metroid
  • System Shock
  • Thief
  • Tomb Raider
  • Unreal Tournament
  • Warcraft II
Unless you live an extremely sheltered life, I'd find it hard to believe that most gamers do not know about at least half of the above list. The ones I bolded are the ones that I knew about until I started to branch out in my early adulthood. At this point I've played them all.

Judging from the games you mentioned, you probably were never a console gamer? I had my roots on NES and C64 (at the same time). I did become a PC user soon after that but I was still very much following console gaming magazines and was into emulation the day 1 Nesticle (and Kgen and Zsnes...) was publicly released.

Also, considering the era we are living in, I do need to point out that FF7 is the only Final Fantasy game that is cyberpunk. :borg:⚔️
Very untrue. FFXIII was extremely cyberpunk, You could even argue for FFVIII.
FFVII is way more Steampunk, its some cool dystopian combination of Steampunk and Art Deco. The Remake is much more explicit on this aspect.
It's less pure steampunk than FFVI, but I partly blame that on the actual rendering technology of the time.

Anyway, I'm currently playing through FFVII remake and absolutely loving it, also really looking forward to Forspoken coming out soon.

Of course, I'm a giant JRPG fan (I've played every single Final Fantasy and almost every Dragon Quest, and pretty much every other jRPG that Squeenix has put out in the past 3 decades - along with a ton from Atlus, Bandai-Namco, Gust, etc.)

If Squeenix goes the NFT route, i'll just not buy their stuff anymore.

I had a NES starting in 1986. My friends had C64's and some had Amiga's. After playing with my parents early Toshiba PC "laptops" for a couple of years I got my first PC in 1991 and was instantly hooked. I don't think I ever touched that NES again and never owned another console.

Throughout my PC hobby I was always a PC hardware enthusiast first. Building and overclocking PC's was my true interest. I played the games because I had the PC, not the other way around.

These days, that is true. Gen 7 was when the line between console and PC really started to blur.

Yeah, I told a white lie above because it was easier than going into details.

I did infact own a PS3 when they first came out, but this was only because they were the best Bluray players around. It was essentially a $600 Bluray player for me. Never played a single game on it.

Can't even remember what happened to the thing. Haven't seen it in years. Might have given it away years ago.

That was my only other console ownership than the NES.

Only once since 1991 do I recall actually playing a game on a console. That was in 1999-2000 some time in my freshman year in college when my dorm room neighbors brought an N64 to the dorm and insisted on playing GoldenEye multiplayer with everyone proclaiming it was the best game ever. I conceded and played a round or two but absolutely hated it. I thought the game was so-so (I later got the whole floor playing Quake 2 deathwatch on the LAN which was much better) the game didn't seem bad, but the split screens and having to use the controller conspired to make the game absolutely unplayable to me.

I hadn't played any FPS game without a mouse and keyboard in years (or really ever, unless you count keyboard only Wolf3D or Early Doom), and my controls are unorthodox to say the least and include using an inverted Y axis, so I ran around and spent most of the time inadvertently staring at the ceiling or the floor and hated the experience.

That was the last time I played any game on any console.
