What Iphone and do you have a datasheet of the panel I suppose you could but it will involve some controller boards and a massive rewire/solder job.

hm, i want to somehow make a stand alone gps unit.

if possible i would like to use this device as a camping accessory, where i would be able to track my self and interact with a map.

sort of like the MTS provided by blackdiamond with less of a tactical use.

What part of this won't an iPhone do?

Do you already have the iPhone, or are you looking to purchase one for the point of destruction?

i already have a spare screen.

well, its an older iphone and is very slow. im looking to mod it in such a way where i would gain benefits even if miniscule.

mainly that its very slow n crappy lol.

si i was thinkin about salvaging some parts from it and then hopefully get some kind of a bigger processing power to go along with it.

What you want to do *might* be possible, but its probably not worth it. Those things are purpose built. Retrofitting different internals to run it will not be an easy task. If you are up for a major project, more power to you, but realize that you are likely navigating uncharted territory and will find very little help anywhere. Unless you are looking for a learning project that will eat up many hours (hundreds, maybe) of your time, I would go ahead and skip this idea.

You state you want it for GPS but the GPS function is incorporated in the logic board not the screen.

Yup. There's an app for that.
This apps lets you use an iDevice as a 2nd monitor, with touch controlling mouse.

http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/how-to-use-your-ipad-or-iphone-as-a-second-monitor-ios/

No hacks needed. Just run the app.
It can't be your primary monitor though, but it lets you use an iDevice as a 2nd screen. Such as a multimonitor setup with a laptop + iPad.
(And heck, I'm even an Android/BlackBerry user, not an iFanboy -- but I knew there was an app for this)

So you want a phone based GPS the works when out of network range?

Nokia Lumia 520 or 521. You can get one for $99 or less and download maps for offline use.

holy smokes, right on.

i actually want to have a computing unit tho, i've been beating around the bush but this is what i really want to do.

i want to carry up to 3 RC helicopters on me.

i want to mount cameras on them, or have a method of capture what the helo's are seeing and have it displayed on a tablet where i could be control the helo also.

i mainly want the gps function so i can be connected and aware of my environment.

i kno it sounds outlandish but i see it as something more feasible and realistic than not.

Aha, I see the context now.
HardForum isn't the correct place to ask these types of questions.

However, I can help steer you in the correct direction. There's already components that allows you to do this, go to a place like www.HobbyKing.com and click the "FPV & Telemetry" section (First Person View) -- the new field of hobbyist radio controlled stuff with cameras that transmit to a wireless video screen (racing cars, boats, R/C planes, helicoptors etc). Including third-party lightweight addon cameras that attach to existing R/C craft, so you can control them out of view (via video). Homebrew toy drones, etc. Basically you can get the kits to put together video/telemetry/etc to create homemade versions of the Parrot AR Drone toy that's been the rage lately.

Also google "FPV camera".
Then googling variants such as "FPV camera iPhone" yields gems such as youtube videos.
Try the RCGroups.com forums.
There are better places to get help for this thing.

(Note: I fly R/C helicoptors and airplanes too.)

The things that hobbyists can now do nowadays are quite nuts, in converting radio controlled airplanes into homebuilt drones, for about only a grand or two:

R/C tri-helicoptor using video googles:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tDp4issfxoo

R/C flying more than a mile away. via wireless video camera (FPV):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4qtaMJDR8Ls

But be noted, check local regulations, get appropriate permissions1, follow rules & fly safely.

dang, im wondering how feasible it would be to now to make a quad copter running on a gas system....

jus to prolong the life on the go...

this stuff is crazyyyy..

i honestly i might have been onto something kind of low key, surprised how many people are messing around with drones.
