Sup [H], out of pure nostalgia I'm looking for some SHOOT 'EM UPS, something in the style of Raptor: Call of the Shadows (but preferably not that old). Can you recommend me any titles?

These are called "2D Shooters" and not "Space Arcades". What the heck are space arcades???

They are still made to this day. I can't think of any for PC offhand besides some DS or Console titles though. There's Tyrian 2000 and Super Stardust that are late 90s releases.

My initial reaction, as a serious gamer who has played almost every major console, arcade, and PC game released in the past 30 years, is.... WTF is a space arcade?

After googling Space Arcade to no avail I googled Raptor: Call of the Shadows, and now I know that by Space Arcade you mean a vertical-scrolling 2D Shooter (space based).

Sadly, figuring out what you were talking about has tired me out so much I don't feel up to trying to recall any such games I have played recently.

When I saw this thread, I thought of:

You call yourself a serious gamer who has played almost every major PC game released in the past 30 years and YOU HAD TO GOOGLE RAPTOR??? This is one of the most well-known and most distributed PC games of the mid-90s. Everybody I knew who owned a PC had this game. It was in stores, on BBS's, it was shared and played in schools. The shareware episode was everywhere.

lol sry guys. english isnt my native language so i had no idea as to how to call this genre of games. anyways, im glad you guys figured it out.
btw. they dont have to be vertical shooters, horizontal will do.

Try out Jets 'N Guns. Played it pretty recently and it was a fun game. Soldner-X Himmelsstürmer is a more recent title with higher end visuals, can't really say much about it as I haven't played it more then 5 mins.

A good vertical shooter you should check out is Ikaruga. It's not on the PC though. Just Dreamcast and Gamecube as far as I know. Very fun and VERY hard.

Not true I have never heard of it and I've been gaming since the early 80's.....

um... I just finished Dead Space on pc, and thought it was amazing!! Does that count? You should go try that one. :P

Dead Space has an asteroids-shooter mini-game level; so when you get to it, you can just camp out there for as long as you want! Also, the boss battles had a great retro feel that reminded me of some old snes games for some reason (contra maybe?).

I remember raptor, call of the shadows, one of the best 2d shooters in the mid 90's.

A modern version would be cool, even if still 2d, but using modern dx9c or dx10 effects

Google

"Bullet Hell"

This is a sub-genre of vertical scrolling shooters noted by the Japanese as "Bullet Hell". The most famous one released in the US recently, was Ikaruga - both for the gamecube, and a downloadable content for the XBox360 (maybe PS3?). The "Touhou Project" is a series of extremely difficult bullet hell shooter. Here's a video of what I'm talking about - it is low quality, and if you'll believe it SLOWED DOWN http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BDBT2gGKlDk&feature=related

Edit: Higher quality mode available on Imperishable Night video.

Yes, I call myself a serious gamer. The reason I didn't recall this game off the top of my head is because I have played SO many games (literally over 1000 published titles), that the ones I didn't get heavily into tend to slip my mind unless I see a screenshot or am told enough specific details to recall it. In addition I was thrown off by the whole "Space Arcade" thing, as previously mentioned.

Around the time this game came out I was probably most heavily into Doom, Warcraft, Rise of the Triad, X-Com UFO Defense, Jagged Alliance, Tie Fighter, and System Shock. I think I played Raptor for about a day, then went back to something better like Tie Fighter, so it wasn't a major game for me at least, though I do recall playing it.

...A true gamer plays way too many games to recall them all.

Gradius / R-Type games via emulator... or if you're looking for something PC-specific (though I think they re-released for the Gameboy Advance or something equally strange?) Tyrian (and Tyrian 2000) is /amazing/. It's difficult to get the original EXE working under any modern OS like XP or Vista, but there is an open source remake now, so you're in the clear. Pick it up! Great game.

Do you know what a good shmup is? Try Forgotten Worlds. You can get it on the Wii virtual console as a Sega Genesis title.

+1
I used to love sneaking up behind my friends in ROTT, pressing the "Behind You" taunt then blasting them.
I was also playing a lot of Wing Commander 3 in 1994.
