Sony Says The Wii Is Not A Competitor

explanation:
if it weren't for the gimmicky controllers and big N's family-friendly reputation it wouldn't have a market... but since it does have the dumbed-down-casual-fun-lighthearted gaming public hooked like fucking cash-shitting fishes people are buying wii.. even though it's a tech throwback with a 70% crap catalog..

Don't hold anything back, tell us how you really feel:D

The Wii brought gaming to older people and people that otherwise wouldn't play video games. That is an awesome accomplishment. It is a competitor in the fact that it's a market competitor, even if it isn't a technical competitor. People have a list of consoles to buy, it's a competition between the three.

I love my Wii for the games. There are a lot of great one. There are a LOT of games, though, that are the gimmicky games that are made to fit the motion controller rather than making a game that really uses the controller. That sucks.

But, the XB360 has it's share of shitty games, too. But, for my age, the games are made for ME. The kids can't play them (well, they can, but as a parent I won't let them). Ghost Recon, Army of Two, etc. are awesome. Graphics are top notch, the HD-DVD addon was just that, an addon. One of the major points with the PS3 is that it is a Blu-ray player. I want a GAMING machine. If I want a media player, I'll buy the addon. Not too bad.

They are all awesome, though. I just see them as competitors. But, there are flowcharts available. If you have friends, get a Wii. If you have online friends, get an XBox 360. If you don't have any friends, get the PS3. :)

So I guess he didn't play Wii fit then? Because that is going take over the gaming world, much more fun over GTA IV...

{sarcasm}

and they all get horrible, horrible games.

This may come as a shock but neither Nintendo nor Sony care about the content in the games. All they care about is how well they sell. Plus you may consider certain games to be horrible, but to the market the game is aimed at its fine. Sony has failed on this front since they have only a couple of exclusive games that you would consider good. I can think of an equal number of games on any console that I would consider playing.

You may think that the gaming is somehow more hardcore on a PS3 or an Xbox or whatever, however it all boils down to the fact that regardless of the console the cast majority of the games are cross platform. In addition none of the games really offer you that much freedom or thought. Console hardcore gaming is an illusion.

explanation:

the wii doesn't fit in with the ps3 or the 360 as a current gen console.. it does fit in well capability-wise with the last gen and the last gen number 1 console is the ps2.. if it weren't for the gimmicky controllers and big N's family-friendly reputation it wouldn't have a market... but since it does have the dumbed-down-casual-fun-lighthearted gaming public hooked like fucking cash-shitting fishes people are buying wii.. even though it's a tech throwback with a 70% crap catalog..

I wasn't asking for an explanation. I was merely commenting that your logic is flawed.

Nintendo Wii is not a competitor because Nintendo has decided to shift its focus and create its own market... all while still being a competitor taking a chunk out of Sony's market! A lot of people that get PS3s also get Wiis. They're gamers, so multiple gaming systems is not uncommon. Either way, Nintendo wins. Oh, and either way, they're making money off each console they sell, while Sony is not. :)

I agree, I don't think it is a competitor. Two very different consoles for two very different types of audiences.

Bingo. Its not a competitor to the market that Sony is going after. I dont know why this is such "big news". Oh yeah... its an anti-Sony topic.

Maybe I'm missing something, but it's actually a news topic...if Sony doesn't want the news generated about them to be negative, maybe they should stop acting so omnipotent and infallible all the time.

Sony is going after the Playstation nutswinger market, not the more general home gaming console market. Der?

lol @ all the PS3 bashing.

The man is completely right. The Wii is more of a novelty thing. Like duck hunt. Its fun, but it isn't exactly a serious gaming console like the 360 or PS3.

I don't own one, but from all the advertising and talk I perceive it as more for party games/young kids/families than someone who wants to play the newest FPS or something.

I don't know. I would be pretty damned embarrassed if a "novelty" console was selling more than twice as many units as mine over a 1+ year period.

That said, your perception isn't entirely correct. I consider myself a "serious" gamer, and some of my favorite gaming moments are on the Wii. Then again, I actually have friends in the RL to play with, but there are still some damn good single player games (mario galaxy is jaw droppingly amazing, metroid prime 3 is pretty good too) Of course, I also have a gaming PC for the more graphical intense games, but I find that the two have all my gaming needs covered.

Good thing the only american console on the market is the 360...

ok i am officially sorry for making reference to a george carlin joke! editing my original post and hopefully slowing down the numbskull replies

wait what am i saying? i know better than that.

there really isn't a lot of commentary in "What?"

As far as my logic being flawed, the distinction that Stringer is attempting to make is the whole point of this discussion.

Is the wii competition for the market segment the PS3 and 360 are aimed? Sure we can delve into generalities of gaming sales but is it truly direct competition? I think there's a last gen bargain bin that the xbox, gamecube and ps2 are in right now and a current gen hi-end multimedia/gaming platform premium bin and that the wii doesn't fit in either one. It's a mostly last-gen-tech box with little to no media capabilities priced smack in the middle of the other two categories. It doesn't belong connected to my hdtv or my projector but it's there anyway with it's shitty low-res graphics burning a hole in my tech-obsessed geek heart. And it is fun for a few moments until you realise how plastic the experience is.

Regardless of how you want to qualify each system's capabilities, Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo are all trying to sell as many systems to cover the home entertainment and console market. You are trying to segment the systems based on what you think the differences are, when that is a moot point. With the exception of Bluray playback they are all gaming systems. Sony made the unfortunate decision of creating a high priced system and bringing it late to the party. Microsoft and Nintendo beat them to the punch.

Seperating the consoles based on pixel pushing does not seperate them from the fact that they are each being sold as a home entertainment console. If you can purchase all three, good for you.

wow

Even if the Wii is not a blue-ray player and doesn't have the same online features and graphical prowess I don't see how they can say its not competition. They need to stop breaking the market down and see "entertainment" for what it is.

I own a high quality gaming PC. I have better graphics, control, and online capability than the PS3. I have a girlfriend who wants a simple and fun piece of "entertainment" and could give a shit less about resolution and talking smack online.

The audience for video games gets broader every day and they choose to target the niche of nerds that aren't nerdy enough to build a real gaming machine like me but still nerdy enough to want to play anything called Final Fantasy. If anything THEY have a niche product. Its a mid-end gaming PC for the dumbed down new generation of gamer that happens to be a able to play overpriced DVD's.

The Wii has mass appeal and for someone who frequently bashes consoles (read X360 and PS3) I sure fucking love me some Wii. Its fun, simple, and innovative. Its staying true to what a console was supposed to be and not trying to be a half-assed (or half-brained) gaming PC.

For those who will flame me, I have played X360 (my brother has it) and PS3 (my nerdy but too simple friend has it). MGS4 is a great game. Its a shame its only available on the worst of the current gaming systems. X360 is superior in almost every way, but I still think its for the birds. Go PC, Go Wii!

Simply because they target different markets. Nintendo went to casual gamer in addition to the kids market. Just take a look to its game library, its the usual pokemon, mario, zelda, megaman, donkey kong stuff.

As a parent I wouldn't get a PS3 for a kid under 10~12 but a Wii is the obvious choice. And both the PS3 and X360 are expensive for casual gaming, again for casual gaming the wii is the obvious choice.

In addition to those games, they have a lot of the same games you find on the other platforms, albiet at a lower resolution. I can think of a few off hand, like Alone in the Dark, Guitar Hero, Resident Evil, Any of the sports franchises. Hell even Force Unleashed is coming to it.

Everyone fails to remember that Wii is covering those markets as well.

the wii is pretty much better, in my opinion

not being an adult (just a teen) but hearing it from several, they say "the wii is awesome, it plays all the games we had a fun time playing when we were kids" i guess since im old enough, i could second that (woo hoo n64)

what do todays kids have? ps3s and 360s wich are heavily marketed but dont nearly as many cool things as the wii

they better start liking nintendo

America as we know it started in brittain... Whats your fucking point?

It started off as a misconstrued joke.

But my point is that blaming America because someone at Sony made a stupid comment is like blaming your Uncle because your mother didn't use birth control.

No your point was nonsense, nobody blamed America. Calling Sony a true american company is not blaming America at all, Its not anti-American to point it out either.

Heh. I was planning on buying a PS3. Not now. The Wii is looking better and better everyday. It's actually quite fun as well. I have an extra projector. Now it's time for drunken Wii bowling.

From a hardware perspective, the Wii falls extremely short of being in the same league as the Xbox360 and PS3. All the Wii has going for it is the motion sensors in the remote and honestly, most games are god awful at sensitivity.

Extremely bad graphics, extremely bad frame rates in many non Nintendo brand games, and really not that many games worth playing.

I say this as an owner of a Wii who does not own a PS3 nor an Xbox360. I enjoy the console to whatever extent but it's more like a relic from the Playstation 2 era.

If you have friends, get a Wii. If you have online friends, get an XBox 360. If you don't have any friends, get the PS3.
That gave me a moment of clarity for some reason. Thank you.

there really isn't a lot of commentary in "What?"

As far as my logic being flawed, the distinction that Stringer is attempting to make is the whole point of this discussion.
The point that you don't seem to understand is that Stringer shouldn't be trying to make a distinction. When your product is failing, you will spin it any way you can to make it sound good for all those investors watching Sony lose $3 billion dollars cause their system sucks.

That's exactly what I was thinking also. I own an Xbox360 and I will never own a Wii system but I recognize it's success. Stringer sounds like the guy who got 3rd place in the mile run, "Awww they had longer legs than me, that wasn't fair!". lol.

Wii for the Wiin!!!! LOL PS3=Blu-ray Player X360=Higher Graphics Gaming Console Wii=Family/Friends Fun Console. The fact remains that the Wii flies off the selves (here in the U.S.) and that's something Sony and M$ have not been able to do with their products!!! Hell most people that own a PS3 will straight come out and say the primary use for it is....are you ready?......Blu-ray Player...LOL

I agree, I don't think it is a competitor. Two very different consoles for two very different types of audiences.

QFT

i own, a PS3 and an Xbox 360, and i can say i have little to no intrest in the wii, the only tihng that slightly intrested me is wii bowling but im sure that would get old fast.

i dont see it as a competitor to the ps3 or 360, the wii is something youll either love or hate.

personally they need to re catigorize the systems

Wii = Game Console

PS3/360 = Home Entertainment System

I have one of each. They all have thier niches and it depends on what I am in the moodfor as to which one I play, I like being able to play my older game cube titles, those games are lighter and fun to play but for serious killingto relieve stress its PS 3 or 360 time. Theres a place for allof the consoles , if you can't decide which one get them all like I did, you will not be disapointed.

I am one of the earliest to get the Wii in my country, now the Wii is collecting dusts. Even my kids got bored with it within afew days. The Wii cheer boys should have their IQ checked, as they are showing mental-retardation.

I own them all and I really think the PS3 excels as a media device. The media streaming is great and it is still the best Blu Ray player on the market.

That said, Sony is being delusional if they think that Nintendo is no longer competition. While there isn't 100% crossover in their respective markets, it is crazy to say that Nintendo hasn't been taking away some PS3 sales with the Wii.

Thats a bold statement... the PS3 is good... but I LOVE my wii, I think they just appeal to different audiences.
