If I had thousands of dollars to blow on Steam, I think I would spend it on games instead. Do you actually care about your Steam stats and engage in all the trading card and badge stuff?

Why do that at all, er, ever? The special Steam Summer Sale badge had a unique quality to it. Using trading cards, it could be upgraded an unlimited number of times. As a result, while St4ck has significantly fewer games and badges than PalmDesert in total, his level 54k summer badge got him so much XP that it made up the difference and then some. (For comparison’s sake, PalmDesert only managed to craft a level 18k summer badge. Still no small feat!)

A fool and his money are soon parted, but a rich person can be a fool the rest of his life.

I have no clue what the cards or levels are for - nor do I care. I use Steam to buy/play games.
Kind of like Facebook friends - does it mean anything how many you have? Speaking of which, I got a resume a few years ago in which the applicant listed how many FB friends they had. It was a joke - we actually pulled the guy in to interview him. I can't remember if we hired him though. It was one of the more entertaining resumes and reviews I ever participated in :)

I sold all the cards I got and made almost $2. I then purchased Postal 2 during the sale. I wouldn't of otherwise.

Game achievements: Candy for the OCD among us. Like so many shards of crystal in a AC game.

*shrug* it's just like any other record holder, usually too much effort, time, and/or money is put into attempting any record, this guy at least made his goal and can claim being #1. Then again I've not been #1 at anything... well I've got a #1 Dad coffee mug, but I think the number of entrants were too few and the judges might be biased.

I have no idea how to use those badges I get in Steam nor do I care. I just use steam for games. That's it.

Why are people rewarding these idiots by posting articles on the internet about them? They should get precisely 0 attention for this kind of uber-loserness.

On the internet there is a lesbian within 5 miles of my house that wants to shag. Sounds legit.

I use to care about getting trading cards for games. Now I find it a waste of money.

Didn't the mail man ask for a recount?

I used to sell those stupid things, to add pennies to my account. not any more since they tied it to a cell phone. too much work. and yeah, I could wait 14 days, which makes it useless.

This and CS GO skins will always perplex me. I have bought a few cards to get badges and backgrounds for games I like... I will admit that.

Me too! But It is a feat that got him publicity so maybe he will get free games gifted to him.....or attention to his youtube channel/web site if he runs 1 not sure what the real goals for.

Maybe {H} will try to beat it on the winter sale to draw new attention/readers in :) and scoop Kotaku on the story:)

while I could use extra cash right now thirteen thousand dollars is not that much money, there are normal people who make a hundred thousand dollars a year for whom that would be a months salary... then there people for whom it a drop in the bucket and some for whom they are going but I could...

I am only at level 14 with 206 games owned and I have trouble finding time to play four or five, to keep in touch with friends who play different games. I have the games I like and in those games I have different friends who like different games. I keep saying one of these days I am going to build a gaming room and leave a bunch of MMO's running all the time so when I walk in the room I can see oh that friend is running a dungeon go hang out with that friend or that bud is doing that raid and needs a tank or extra dps or healer... That is what I would waste stupid amounts of money on... through it would required faster internet and about four to ten of the rigs I have to do right and a couple projectors or high end displays. Or maybe a couple really crazy high end screens at a desk and projectors projecting the rest of the displays on the far wall. Who knows people spend money on what they think they want... then wonder where their money went when they need it for something.

Steam cards are amazing invention :) Feels good selling them and then getting free game every once in a while.

If the guy doesn't live off of tax payers because of this, then who are we to judge what makes him happy?
Probably the same people who don't like seeing gambling addicts go to casinos.

Can be a marketing gimmick for some people.

You guys are talking about it, others probably are too, and considering how much a single commercial on TV can cost, if this gets the guy the publicity he wants to put his name out there for some ulterior motive that hasn't been revealed, it might be clever.

He wouldn't be the first to do something like that.

That's exactly what I do. Ya, I might only get 4-5 cents a card, but when a game I'm playing randomly spits out 10-15 cards, it starts to add up. I remember during one of the summer sales, I was getting cards for buying games or something. People were paying 25 cents or higher for those cards.

Steam Cards: How Do They Work?

It is interesting to me that someone would want to trad these virtual things that seemingly don't do much for you... but valve has made a lot of money selling hats or whatever in Team Fortress. I have seen these cards when I have purchased games on Steam, but I was never certain about their use.
