Someone please explain MHL HDMI

So I'm seeing a lot of new phones that come with this "MHL" connection rather than micro USB and a separate micro HDMI port like my trusty Evo 4G has. Am I to understand that with this port I can no longer charge my phone while outputting signal to a display? So the only way to mirror the screen to a TV is on battery power?

Please someone tell me I'm wrong here because that seems like a huge step backwards. What's the thinking there?

Its just an adapter that allows you to mirror whatever your doing with your phone to your TV. You need external power in order for this to work so yes it will charge your phone as well but not as fast as it would without the adapter.

I use mine to play NES and SNES with my sixaxis controller on the TV :D
