I'm looking at a software like ghost or acronis true image that would not only create a hd image directly on a DVD but would also make that DVD bootable, so you can boot with the recovery disk and directly restore your PC, without having to boot with a ghost boot cd then swap media and restore the image.

the goal here is to leave a simple, easy to use recovery system DVD's to friends and family members so i don't have to spend hours resintalling their OS every now and then. The recovery media you can create with HP/COMPAQ/ACER computers you buy at best buy comes to mind, but not as crappy.

I just checked that a possible website is terabyteunlimited.com, but
no time today to even check if versions more recent than mine
will do what you want.. No dvd here yet so i'm even more clueless.

Did you check to see if this feature was available on Acronis True Image?
