Looking to replace the stock cooler and do some overclocking. I use a core i5-760 on an asus gene III socket 1156 motherboard. I would like to either have a side mounted heatsink or a top reverse mounted fan that exhausts the hot air through the psu. I do not wish to make any cutting or modifications. I also don't want watercooling... just looking for an affordable and effective method to bring down the temperatures.

I would get the scythe ninja mini but I can't find it anywhere. Any good recommendations?

anybody tried this? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835150113

From your description it sounds like you are looking for something like the new Noctua NH-C14:

105 mm height with only the bottom fan installed so it might even fit within the bounds of the removable mobo tray (with proper orientation because of the large footprint) saving you from having to mount the fan inside the case.

Expensive though.

When is noctua not expensive?

Seems like that one will fit height wise with the removable motherboard tray but what about width? I thought the older model people had to shave a bit of the case chassis to make clearance for width of the hsf. If not you will have to go through hell to mount the hsf within the case.

Width will be a close call depending on the location of your CPU socket.

I am considering the Noctua C14 myself. The width of the heatsink is 140mm.

I currently have a V351 with a Zalman CNPS 7700 which is 136mm wide and I have to bend the fins to slide the tray in, and the noctua is 2mm wider at each end. However my CPU socket is very close to the top edge of the mobo (socket 775). With most LGA 1156\1155 boards the CPU is further down due to lack of Northbridge so it should just fit. It might even fit in the V351 with both fans attached in push\pull setup. (130mm tall)

sexy but pricey!

The cooler master geminII seems like a good solution but how does it perform if you flip the fan in the opposite direction? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...cm_re=core_i5_heatsink-_-35-103-046-_-Product

About the same. Pull is really ideal in most cases as opposed to push, so it might even do a little better.

Wouldn't pull give you less flow over the mobo though? Pushing give you some forced direction, but pull just takes it from anywhere.

That's what intake and exhaust fans on the case are for. The HSF should take care of the CPU. Anything else is gravy.
