So Who's got a Mac Mini?

I wish I had one, but I have 3 macs alreadys with one on the shelf doing nothing.

I received my 1.25 256mb 40G a couple of weeks ago. I have since OC'd it to 1.5 Ghz and upgraded the ram to 1gb. My first Mac ever and I am really enjoying it. I just shut off my AMD box a couple of minute ago and I am going to try and use the Mac exclusively for all non gaming activities. My next upgrade might be to add a 7200 rpm 8Mb cache drive.

My only complaint would be that the video is dark on my 21" CRT compared to my windows box. I might have to get the new 24" Dell LCD. Does it ever stop?

it never stops, no.

apple will take all your money, but somehow youll be glad to give it to them.

Give one to me. :) I'll pay shipping. I have a friend who wants to try one out [extended tryout - not 10 minutes at the apple store] before biting the bullet. As I don't have any macs, I can't really help him out.

Apple should invest in like, a 20 day tryout period.

I really dont want to invest that much money, and find that I dont really nead it (ass apposed to a PC< where it can do any program, while the mac is limted)

Not saying macs are bad, But Im not realy sure I NEED one.

hey Hate Bot,

show me the PC that can run iLife or FCP.

it works both ways you know. :)

I have a 1.25, 512, combo.

my first mac, and im hooked for life. i keep going over to the mac section at compusa to mess with the g5 Powermacs.

i have only had my mini for 3 weeks, and i am starting to think of ways, and things i could sell off arround my dorm to pay for a dual 1.8 g5. :D

I have one.

I'll probably sell it later on when a G5-based mini comes out.

and $499 is too much money? come on...and if you pull games out of the mix where is the Mac limited in programs? Selector is also right about iLife and FCP/FCE...try running them on a PC (or their equivelant) and see what happens

just the thought of not having to worry about viruses/spyware is enough to switch me over.

and ilife/OSX...come one now....those programs are fucking righteous

i just bought the pb for myself so i wont be getting one, I will, however, upgrade the pc in my guestroom at home to a mac mini over the summer.

is anyone else tired of people coming here and asking us to justify to them why they should switch?! I am. it's not our responisibility to switch people, and we're already fully aware of the differences between the platforms. arg.

We could have some fun with reverse psychology.

yeah like that mac mini article spoof that complained about lack of constant updates for the os and adaware apps :p . but seriously, when was the last time i (or one of us) went crapping on an intel or amd thread?

"i want an intel pc for gaming"

us- 'what, you can never get me to switch from my mac'

completely unrelated... like the guy that stumbles up to you at the bar and interrupts the conversation you're having with a hot chick... bugger off :D

I got one as well about month ago right after the KeyNote.
original 1.25GHZ/250MB/40GB HD
now 1.25GHZ/1GB RAM/40GB HD + 250 LaCie Triple Interface.

Best investment you can make by upgrading to 3rd party memory. Its like day and night.
This thing is flying now.

The OS reminds you of Redhat perhaps because they are both based on UNIX.

No offense, but this must be the 15th "mini" thread that absolutely has no purpose. But I'll had my two cents to the pot: I like the Mini - it has great style. I will suggest it to my parents when the PC I built for them three or four years ago finally dies so they can easily read email and check the weather. I will stick to my used G4 tower until I can afford a G5 or until they build a more "middle of the road" computer that doesn't have a built in monitor, that I can upgrade the video, and has a regular size harddrive.

Just one question... How the hell does OS X remind you of Redhat? Other than the fact that both are POSIX (which you only really notice in the terminal, anyway), I'm having a hard time finding similarities...

I got mine a few weeks ago. I got a 1.4 and bumped the memory up to 1 gig myself.

Now I can finally get rid of my nextstep machine.

because it doesnt look like windows? thats my best guess...

Garage 81 pretty much sums that up. Plus, the way drives mount, etc. And the ability to bring up a unix terminal

For some people, to "experiment" with, it is. As apple isn't very good about returns (25% restocking fee, I think?) Where as, these same people already *have* windows boxes..

As for running FCP's equal, what would you consider it's equal?
Cause I run premiere and it hums along quite nicely. Hell, virtualdub works quite nicely, too..

btw.. FCP [according to http://www.apple.com/finalcutpro/] is $999.00

Premiere pro is $699, and that's from J&R .. I'm sure if i Hunted around a little bit, -- I could find premiere pro cheaper.

As far as FCE's equal? Well, I get that free. Windows Movie Maker it's called. And yes, I've actually USED fce..

Tell me, mr "the iPod is a bad product because it doesn't have an FM-reciever," do you ever come here and not troll like a maniac?

First of all, everyone and their fucking grandmothers I've talked to about FCE/P says that it absolutely fucking rocks, and that Premiere doesn't hold a candle to it in any possible way. Yes, the foul language is necessary to illustrate just how much people love it.

Second, yeah, we get crummy video editing applications for next to nothing too. It's called iMovie.

for the people that have one, would you say its a good peice of HW to learn MAC OS X on ? i thin it would be better if i got one with OS X instead of an older OS. i want to learn mac since i know windows almost inside out

First lesson, write this a hundred times:

"Mac is short for Macintosh, it is not an acronym. I will never write it in large letters, unless I am shouting, which I shouldn't be doing anyway. It is not short for Media Access Control, something that should be written in large letters. Mac is short for Macintosh. Mac is short for Macintosh. Mac is short for Macintosh."

;)

Premiere was so competitive with FCP on the Mac platform Adobe had to kill it off.....so Premiere is what you run for video editing if you can't afford the real thing. It was a POS on the Mac compared to FCP on the Mac. I've never used the PC version so I cant comment, but if you have to run Windows to use it it MUST suck donkey nuts.

Comparing FCE 2.0 to Windows Movie Maker is just a troll, so bite me. You've never used FCE, or you wouldnt make a troll out of something everyone knows is a total falsehood. You would give it enough truth to have everyone wondering if you could be right. IMovie HD wipes the floor with MM. Maybe the original version was close, the one before iLife '04.

The only thing Windows is good for is games, and that's exactly what I use it for.....a big overgrown X box.

as I said before, another in a long line of pointless MAC (that's For Black Morty) Mini threads that is flying off onto a tangent into nowhere. Fast.

i have a mini on the way

so i guess i dont "have" one...

but soon it will be mine... and there will be much rejoicing

this is just my opinion

Final cut and premier.. to me i just use it for very minor things like cutting and transitions (then again im not that hardcore with video) but i use combustion (which available in both platforms as i recall) for everything else.. especiially keying and tracking.

Im not sure what iLife is but its sounds lively =)

to me getting a mac? well i will just cause it will help me gain respect in the design community and it will force me to work cause i just bought a damn expensive machine thats not exactly meant for gaming.

Mac mini's i heard have problems with vga compatiblity either too dark or doesnt show at all.
thats why im getting an Imac g5 instead..its so pretty to bad they didnt put the cd slot at the top like a toaster (after alll the program for burning is toast)

hehe im done now...

Wish I could get a mini right now. Still running my old beige G3 desktop with 10.2.8 on it.. thing is slower than a slug on a trail of salt.

I just got my Mini about two weeks ago, and its awsome. I put in a 512 meg stick of Crucial pc 2700, and it runs pretty smooth. UT2004 is playable with everything turned off, and so far I havent really had any complaints with it.

Got the 1.42 with the 80 gig drive the other day, bumped the memory to 512MB with a stick I had laying around. Am considering uping the memory to 1Gig, and replacing the drive with a 7200 RPM drive to bump the performance....So far, its a capable little toy.

I'm personally fond of Windows, even thought it has countless flaws :p. But when it comes to doing pure Design (like web design) a Mac would be very nice to have. Whenever I get the chance (and $) I'll pick up a Mac Mini so I can use it strictly for Web Design, that way I can make my main PC a solid gamer.
