So... When are those 8gb cards coming out?

8GB cards?...probably April from Nvidia...they'll use it to counter AMD's 380x

how mad do you think all the 8GB 970 owners will be when they figure out they can only run 7GB of that ram and full speed? :D

I don't envy you high rez surroundview owners with RAM withdrawal issues, I really don't

So true. I keep thinking about going 4k or surround (currently on 1440p) and keep putting it off because the GPU power to run something like that at acceptable framerates is daft, especially if you want to play at High-Very-High-Ultra settings.

So I stick with my current set up.

It's why I'm rockin' with a 1920x1200 (will switch to a native 16:9 in time) monitor. You can max out most stuff without spending more than $300 flat every other generation of GPU. While tons of pixels is appealing, buying the underlying hardware to support it is just waaaay out of my reach for now.

I play mostly MMOs and single player and/or other like Divinity, Grim Dawn and the like.

I have 5760*1080 on my system (see sig)

ESO (All in game settings @ max) regularly gets into the 3 to 3.5 range for GB or Vram used. No doubt some of it is due to texture caching.

The Secret World I have been playing about a month and am liking it a lot. Fps can tank on this one and AA and FXAA are both off. I hit 3+ gb vram, I have only been though 1 zone and play is so far limited.

From my experience (and my system), for people with extended resolution who are going to want all the eye candy on a 6gb GTX 980 is a reasonable request. For someone who wants to simi-future-proof making sure future titles are playable even at lower settings I see 8gb as realistically needed for 3/4k and higher.

I dont see it as being a horsepower issue.

Why can't we just swap out the RAM 4GB, 8GB, 16gb chips... ??? Seems like a way to make even more money for these GPU companies.

Cause they make more money selling the entire card, vs just memory modules....

There's been some rumours of gtx 980 ti being delayed to 2016 due to tsmc production yields, and some alleged claims of nvidia preparing to announce the new gtx titan in April.

As for 8gb variants of gtx 970/980, Samsung has recently announced that they will be producing 1GB vram chips which could be used by nvidia when they decide to do their maxwell refresh - No confirmation as to when this might happen.

I would love if Nvidia released a 6GB or 8GB card this coming month...wishful thinking or is there a chance?...that's the only way I would replace my current 970

Snowballs chance in hell on a bad day. Don't expect anything till summer

i am not so certain about that

Short term, possibly. Long term? Very unlikely. Nvidia would have gone outa business with the horrid FX 5800 ultra series in 2002 if a simple business screw up was that determinantal to them.

But it won't effect sales.

Is your head in the sand? Have you seen all the returns in Europe? I do not think Nvidia will be hurt long term by this but it certainly affected them this generation. Returns on GTX970s are bad for Nvidias AIBs and in the end its bad for them as well.
And on the subject of memes.

Yeah i mean i am not suggesting it will send Nvida broke, but i think for the short term there will be at least some effects caused by it, and i am most certain there will be in the used 970 market.(which obviously doesn't hurt Nvidia)

I have seen mentions of the 5800 stories around, but am not sure the specifics, i was too young then , wish to enlighten me?

I have been buying nvidia cards since the tnt. I tried 2 ati cards and will never buy any of there products. I have never had a problem with nvidia products, And there are thousands out there are like me, I'm getting ready to buy 2 more nvidia cards for my new build.

I remember the 5800 Ultra. You could dry your hair with it. It never stop people from buying. Hey look at the thread here about bad msi 780 card catching on fire.. It is not stopping people from buying msi..

It was a little blast-furnace in the shape of an AGP GPU released by Nvidia as a (too little too late) response to the fucking smash-epic-badassery that was the ATI 9700 Pro, and it managed to simultaneously underwhelm in performance and possibly inspire Dyson to make newer and more insane vacuum cleaners. :p

ROFL! All the 5800 summary in one sentence!

This is by far the best and most accurate explanation of the nature surrounding the 5800 to ever grace the entire world wide web.

Exactly. Since day 1 of the 780 6gb release, they have been the rarest and hardest 700 series gpu to find, it was really disappointing

I loved that description of the 5800 Ultra. Nothing beat the awesomeness of the 9700 Pro and 9800 Pro cards during that era. I normally change out video cards every year to 18 months, but that 9800 Pro lasted me more than 2.5 years. It was awesome!

I think my first NVidia card was a RIVA 128 back in the late 90s. It ran hot as hell also. For extended gaming sessions, you practically had to take the side of your case off in order to get enough air flow to keep it cool so that you didn't end up with texture tearing. I still kick myself for buying that instead of a 3dfx card back then. I think that old RIVA card ran at something like 100mhz and had less than 20kb of cache.

Nvidia is hosting a press event on March 5th, entitled “Redefine Future of Gaming”...

March 3rd. It's probably Shield 2 or some shit. If they're "redefining the future of gaming" I don't think it can be a card launch - that doesn't redefine anything, it's expected.

"Futureproofing"

Upgrading GPUs is a much more complex matter in laptops, if possible at all. Except at the highest end, most GPUs are soldered, and even the 980M comes in a soldered flavor. MXM cards are by and large hard to come by, cost a good fortune, and to top it off there's no guarantee of compatibility. (eg Clevo MXM cards work in Alienware, but not the other way around; MSI machines can take Clevo cards, but not the other way around)

In that sense it almost makes sense to smack on gobs of vram, since upgrading is a very expensive affair (especially for SLI laptops) and not for the faint of heart, with the price of upgrading both GPUs easily exceeding $1600 most of the time. Even now my 780M SLI cards would cost more than my Gigabyte 970s lol.

Yeah, but how often do you outrow RAM needs on an otherwise fast enough GPU?

By the time a normal amount of VRAM is insufficient on a laptop GPU, that GPU is going to be too slow to be relevant anyway.

Christ, now you made me feel reeeealy old....

I actually needed that enlightenment as well, as I had completely forgotten about this era of GPU's.

I skipped the Geforce 4 and FX generations. Went straight from a Geforce 3 TI 500 to the 6800 GT.

After the 6800 I skipped MANY MANY generations :p
