I have a .edu email address I use on the go via IMAP. Their SMTP server doesn't let me send when I'm not on their network, so I'm thinking of setting up a simple SMTP server on my WHS box so I have a relay I can use no matter where I am.

Any suggestions? Thanks.

I would advise against it, and check if they have an SPF (sender policy framework) DNS record configured, if they do you're mail will probably just get tagged as spam.

I would ask if they provide SMTP on an alternate port with authentication, 465 with SSL is pretty common, as is 587 (submission)

Probably won't be able to due to strict spam protocols. You'd first need to for sure have a static IP, need to have reverse DNS setup and some SPF records setup so to make sure that you're not a spammer.

and your isp, might not allow you to :) they might block the smtp ports.

why not just use your providers out going credentials ?

ewww SMTP on windows. Unless things are better, last I checked there are a few programs that do it, but they all act as open relay and don't have very much options.

What I would do is setup a Linux box with postfix, and only allow relay for the IPs you plan to send email from. Or take the time and setup SMTP authentication.

But first ensure your ISP allows it, most of them block incoming port 25 connections these days because of all the people that don't have a firewall and get a trojan of some sort that then acts as an open relay.

I do have a static IP with reverse DNS, and my ISP does not block SMTP ports (even if they did, I could of course use any port I wanted) ;) Also, since the email client will be a mobile phone the IP address will be changing all the time. Obviously I plan on using authentication and not leaving an open anonymous relay.

I appreciate all the advice, guys, really. But does anyone have an answer to the question asked?

Yes

EDIT: This is also free.

And these cost money.

And this one is in the middle, free version and paid; never used it though.

EDIT2: Another free one for up to 5 users, never used this one either.

Well windows server 2008 and 2003 have SMTP servers built in. You just need to add them as a feature. For WHS I don't know if this is possible, but since it is built on the Server 2003 framework it could be possible.

As far as 3rd party apps I don't know of any.

If the client is a mobile phone connected to any of the big 3's networks, then why not just use their SMTP servers?

It's just part of IIS 6. You can run it on a desktop. It's a perfectly serviceable SMTP server.

Dont mind them. sometimes its all doom and gloom around here.

However, outside of an Exchange server I have never used any other smtp server.
