Smokin Hot: I/OMagic 8x DVD±RW/±R dual format, $89.94 after IR

Yep, same drive that was on sale for 99.94 three weeks ago. We just got a shipment of about 35 of these yesterday. For that price, and the quality of the drive, they 'should' fly out of the store.

I found all the speeds:

Write Speed: DVD+R=8X DVD-R=4X DVD+RW=4X DVD-RW=2X CD-R=40X CD-RW=24X

Reading Speed: DVD-Rom=12X CD-ROM=40X

It sux that there is no staples near me. The closest is like 2 hours away.

From 2/15 to 2/16 it's actually $60 off. So if you buy one then it'll cost you only 69.94 + tax. Pretty sweet deal I think, and it's all instant.

And yeah, it is valid on-line too.

yeah.. well 149.94 - 60 = 89.94 or is my math off?

Yeah yeah... You're right. I threw me that it was coming up 129.99 on the web site, and not 149.99. They already took the first 20 off.
Oops , heh..

If you want, I can pick one up for you if you'll pay the price I have to pay plus the shipping. I have a Staples nearby, and I saw them stocking this tonight. Let me know...

I'd dare say the lite-ons are probably better. Any way of telling what rebadge you're buying? Anyone know the specific serial #? Last i remembered, optorite didn't have a 40X CD-R burn speed(?)

There's a thread over on fatwallet about this, it's either a BTC or an Optorite:

http://fatwallet.com/forums/messageview.php?catid=18&threadid=269993

I'm gonna head over to staples when they open and see if I can find an optorite. report back later...

is it worth 89 dollars for that??

because I already have the lite-on 811s and 401s...

maybe I'll get this one for my parents??

what do you all think??

Just picked one up... If you throw in a couple of 10-packs of DVD media ($7.98 ea)to bring your total over $100.00 they give you a case of paper free *Bonus!*

/edit: Installed! it's much quieter than my Liteon DVD/CDRW

They will only do it if they carry the same item.
I am pretty sure they carry it. I remember seeing it there.

OD has low price guarantee. there is a button on the register that has "LPG" on it. When the cashier presses it they have to enter the competitor code for Staples.

hehe, my b-inlaw rushed out to buy this when he found out about it. He got the BTC drive and can't get it to work 100%. It's burning cd's but doesn't want to burn dvd's...i'll have to check it out this week for him but he's holding onto his reciept just in case. If the BTC doesn't work out then it'll be Lite-On all the way.

picked one up today, burning dvds with it right now, works great for me, seems like a pretty sweet deal. and yeah as RagingSamster they have 10pack TDK DVD+R media for 7.98 also a pretty sweet deal.

I picked one up, and it is a BTC unit. Seems to work well right now and a good replacement for my nd1100a...

I got one from a local staples only to find it was a btc.

Called three office depots and three staples and finally found some optorites at the last staples I called. I wish I had found the optorite at OD because of the extra rebates.

The hd-burn 1.4gig onto a 700mb disc could come in handy.

The fatwallet link is down, I bet too many deal sites were linking to it.

Edit: No rebates.

Oh sorry man, I was bummed I couldn't get em from staples after I found them on fatwallet. Didn't even check the dates.

I bought one of these back when they were 129 bucks, used it for about two weeks and sold it to a friend and went with the Lite-On.
The read speeds on this drive are terrible. It would take forever to read any disk I put in, burnt or otherwise. I sacrificed the 8X for 4x but that is no biggy.
Maybe I am just used to the Lite-On I don't know it just seems to work better in my system.

I got an optorite version the problem is it came with 110I firmware that disables hd burn, i finally found some cracked firmware that changed it to 120E which enables the HDBurn. Neither firmwares will let me upgrade to the 130E though. But if you have one with an 110I or 120I firware search for "DD0401_win_120E.zip" with your favorite search and you should come up with it. When you do go to update it it says the firmware you put on is yyyy but thats ok cause once you reboot it will be 120E.

I picked up one of the BTC units
it seems to burn my DVDs ok and cds seem to work. Its a bit loswer than the 52x burner i had in there but thats to be expected.
My big annoyance is i cant seem to flash the bios.
it has rev 52 bios and the current one is rev 55.
my understanding is that could help the drive a lot.

I've got the BTC and was able flash using a utility that somebody posted in the first thread 3 weeks ago. I like the fast DVD read... hate the bundles software though ... using Nero 5.9+ and no problems ....

Can you burn DVD+R with this firmware? In nero it says it is not supported. (It said that with the 120e and the stock firmware as well)

This is soooo tempting. But I just know that within a few months, it's going to drop even farther. They always do. You get this great deal, then the next thing you know they drop to $89.99 w/ a $30 M.I.R. or something.

I'll hold out. *pinches penny*

I don't have a staples near me, but I printed out the ad and went to a CompUSA. They pricematched it. So hey as long as it works I thought I'd get it. SO- how do you know what drive you actually have? And- how do you then get the correct/updated flashes?

I just went in, that $89 deal is over as of yesterday, its back to 129.99 now.(on sale from 149.99)

Mine is a weird manufacturer
It has a large name in the center (i don't remember it)
at the bottom is says made by top G

Just did 2 memorex 4x dvd+r's at 4x just fine. Tempted try it at 8x but i'm getting low and don't want to waste any. 15 minutes is sooooo much nicer then the 30 my ricoh took. Now i just need to find some faster rw's. oh and i did some of those hd burns on some cheap kypermedia discs and they went through fine.

I think that is the btc. The one I got first in the nonshrinked package said top g. I read that the boxes with the sticker are all btc.

Then I found an optorite at another store. :) come on new firmware!
