Skyrim Issue - Upgraded gpu and games won't load

I upgraded my GPU today from a GTX 460 to a GTX 570. I opened the launcher, switched to ultra graphics, then loaded my latest saved game. When it loaded it, the game was incredibly laggy for some reason. I thought maybe the new GPU was fubar. So I exited out and loaded up BF 3, switched to max graphics and loaded up the game. It plays just fine. I went back to Skyrim and now every time I load up my saved game, the game crashes. This is the same saved game that loaded 10 minutes before this. To remedy, I tried going back a couple days and the only saved game I could get to work was one I made at the very start and one I made 3 days ago. I rolled back my latest saved game by deleting the .bak, and it still won't load. I notice the two that load are 1MB and 5MB, and the one that won't load is 7MB. I try loading an old save that works, then immediately loading a newer save, and it crashes as well when I select the newer saved game.

I don't understand the weird laggy graphics and now the lack of save games not loading. I reinstalled the 290 drivers as well as redownloaded Skyrim. Still nothing works.

Maybe try deleting your .ini files and let the game reload them? I know in one of them somewhere it lists your graphics card's name, maybe that is messing something up?

I tried that as well. Like I said, old saved games still work, even on the higher graphics settings, I can also start a new game. It's the latest saved games that don't work now.

To make things more interesting, I switched back to my old GPU. It still won't load the saved games. I tried a second time and it said all of my saved games were corrupted. I tried a third time and it went back to letting me load older saved games but not the newer ones. WTF is going on?

Sounds like your upgrade coincided with the 1.2 patch? In which case it might be 2 different problems here, I've read some people have corrupted saves due to the patch.

Well I got it to load back up but I think I'm still screwed.

What I forgot to mention is when I installed the new GPU and set it to Ultra, I also put in a few of the .ini tweaks featured at [H]. After the crashes I deleted the .ini and did not put those tweaks back in. It kept crashing without them. Now I put the tweaks back in and it loads the saved games, but like I said, it's really laggy. I'm affraid if I roll the .ini settings back It will screw up again. I can't play it like it is though.

*edit* Update - I narrowed it down to uGridstoload=7. Without that setting, the saved games crashes, with it, they load. However, I can't change it from 7 to 5 (default). Somehow the game can't load without that setting now. Thing is I never saved it after I used that setting the first time.

*edit #2* OK I think I fixed it!!!!!!!!!! I had to load the game up with ugridstoload=7 (bad performance and all). I alt-tabbed out then edited the ini back to =5, then saved. I went back into the game and brought up the console and did a 'refini'. I then saved the game and exited. I deleted both inis (along with all custom settings), then just loaded the game up with default settings and the saved game loads without custom inis.

Lesson learned - The ini settings not in there are probably not there for a reason. Don't add stuff.

I haven't played since the patch but if it corrupts my save data the blood of the innocent will be spilled. Molag Bal shall see to it.

If it was due to the uGridToLoad thing, there is a way to fix corrupted saves using the console as well. I didn't mention it before because it wasn't clear that that was your issue, but it's been discussed several times in the main thread and the [H] tweaks thread.

Also, odd that you are getting bad performance with uGird=7...I am using that and it works fine. SLI here, though.

Oh right, yes this setting is problematic for me, although in different ways.

I'd used other tweaks in the game to improve things but started using the uGridstoload=7 after reading the [H]ardocp article, turns out that in some indoor instances frame rate would drop to <1fps which is unplayable.

So i had to remove that setting, i think i just removed the setting from ini and restarted the game and it defaulted back to 5, I can't remember now.

I think [H]ardocp need to remove that setting from their guide right now it's clearly not stable on all configurations, if they haven't done already.

Yep. I can confirm both of the uGridsToLoad problems. If you go higher, then save the game, you're stuck using that setting or higher from now on. If you set it back down to 5, and then load a save with more grids, the game can't handle it.

Learned that the hard way when I ran into the <1fps thing you were talking about in a cave and had to kill that tweak.

Exactly my problem. I was indoors when I saved before the setting, so I immediately noticed the lag when I logged in. Eventually I got back outside with it still set to 7. The game outdoors played absolutely fine.

GridsLoad is a recipie for instability and trouble and WILL corrupt saves unless you plan and prepare accordingly.

I've given up trying to use them. The game engine is so fragile and bitchy it just isn't worth it.

Isn't it possible to set the Ugrids setting back to 5 in game? That's what I did at least by using the console command. Also did you set your shadow resolution higher than 4096? I hear that above that would causes the interior locations to drop to 3+ fps.
