Can I use multi mode equipments (100FX) with single mode fiber? The runs would not be terribly long, certainly not 2km, but at least several hundred meters. I am trying to figure out if I can get a cheap setup to mess with the stuff, as I already have a fiber equipped switch; I just need the fiber and a media converter

The short answer is no, the core size of multi-mode fiber is larger than that of single-mode fiber, single-mode fiber only allows 1 wavelength of light go through it while multi-mode has a larger core so that you can use multiple wavelengths of light. Single-mode fiber has a core size of around 10 microns in diameter, multi-mode has a core size of around 60 to 80 microns.
