Silverstone TJ11: The Big-Ticket

I do believe I shall build an Ivy Bridge PC into a TJ11 :)

Will that new Corsair Double Rad all in one CPU Cooler fit with 4 push pull fans somewhere.... ?

I'm also happy to see those murder mods for the TJ11.

What configs does the TJ11 come in again? I want black with black interior with no window. Or can I buy a solid side panel and the widowed one for options? If it comes in silver, is that like painted or is it just the metal? I only see black with window for sale...

Back when I stared here on hardforum, I went threw a lot of cases, The FT02 build I did last was so much fun, best case I've touched so far, I sold it recently, and I always liked the FT10. I can't wait to see what a TJ11 is like! Funny now I'm after a TJ11 build, but I sill have this outdated nick here on hardforum, but the TV show I got it from - Heroes - is dead! And it didn't go gracefully.... I wish I could change my name here lol.

What happened to normal cases. Why is every case maker I see these days going with absolute radical designs made for 3+ GPU's? I have a TJ10 which is great, but I'd really like a newer SilverStone that's not as big (due to the center GPU cooler) and clean lines like those of the TJ09/TJ10....

If you aren't using 3+ GPUs then why the heck would you buy a $500+ case...

I put together a preliminary list of parts for my planned TJ11 build, tell me what you guys think:

Other Notes:

I already have handy copy of Windows 7 Pro Retail from my last build. I also have my trusty Filco TenKeyLess Ninja Cherry Brown keyboard, the matching numberpad, and my Logitech G700 mouse. I have my Razer Megasoma mouse pad. I didn't have to do as much research this time, instead of reading reviews for a month or three, I just picked out the slightly updated versions of the products I already trust from my last build. The SSD is still Intel for example, I trust them more than the OCZ stuff. For Blu-Ray, I choose LG over Pioneer only because Pioneer is making eject buttons that feel super flimsy lately. Honestly I would rather have that Pioneer with solid build quality. I've always went the WD Caviar Black path for my HDs, why change now? The Gentle Typhoons are hard to find, if they ever come back into stock at all, but they are still the best fans I know of for now (I owned the 1850RPM ones, found they where overkill, so I'm going with 1450RPM this time for more silence and longer lifespan), and I really dig the Silverstone Air Penetrator Fans too. I rocked a Super Mega last time, but I want to lighten the load off the CPU with the H100, where as before I felt I could not move the PC in a car or ship it if I had that Super Mega attached. Which is why the design element of the TJ11 that allows for the graphics card hanging straight down appeals to me, less stress on the motherboard. Here are the keyboard/numberpad/mouse pad/mouse links:

For A/V options I have a high end Headphone & DAC Headphone Amp plan (Audeze LCD-2 and Burson HA-160D with its USB DAC), but for normal speaker listening I intend to use the USB B&W MM-1 Powered Speakers, as I want good sounding small speakers with a remote. Note that with these options, there is no need for any sound card at all, as I use outboard DACs. Video wise, I wanted a low input lag IPS screen with good connectivity, and no matter how much I want a high end H-IPS NEC, the Dell U2312HM is just too good a deal, has far better input lag, LED for instant on and long life, and I really enjoyed my old Dell U2311H. Here are the links for the headphone options I'm digging:

The best headphone options for home use:

The best headphone portability options:

http://www.westone.com/music-products/Custom-Fit-Pro-Audio/ES5

http://www.centrance.com/store/cart.php?target=product&product_id=16153

The Dell displays come with almost all the wires I need except these two, I would buy these options when considering nice build quality:

http://www.amazon.com/Component-Vid...UTF8&coliid=IGUAP6U6Q9YOY&colid=38AYZ0T0LFWZ2

For motherboard, I am less sure, as my last one was an Asus Rampage III Extreme. I will stick to Asus Republic of Gamers, but I am not sure which is the current Intel Chip series to wait for. I want native USB 3 and Sata III on an Intel Chipset. So someone lay out the upcoming options for me if you can. One thing to note is that I am currently rocking an early 2011 15-inch 2.3GHz i7 MacBook Pro, so I am in no rush at all, I can wait a year if needed. So what is the hottest options coming down the pike? Last time I spent under $1000 between the CPU/GPU/Motherboard/RAM, so I would like the core parts budget to remain the same or cheaper. I need the Motherboard choice down before I can pick the other core parts out. Graphic Cards remain a fast moving target, RAM is whatever brand/specs/price is good at the time, and the CPU depends on the Motherboard.

So that's where I'm at. I am set on this TJ11 case, despite the price, as I really like the fine touches of the balls out design. Things like the removable motherboard tray, all rivetless all screw design, unibody aluminum, stack cooling, placement of the case ports, great air cooling with water cooling potential, room for anything, ETC. Its less deep than the FT02 and I like that it stands high with a power button on top (as well as the option to place it on the desk with a lower power button) as for now I plan on using it Floorstanding style for Blu-Ray & Movie Jukeboxing with my new awesome well received LG 47LW5600 Passive 3D HDTV (Passive is awesome BTW, no powered glasses, just the movie theater style ones). The TJ11 build will also serve as my main power user desktop too, even if I have to place a desk next to my HDTV.

Anybody have thoughts on parts for the 2011-2012 timeframe? And where does one get the extra screws to use the Corsair H100 in push pull, as it only comes with enough for two fans? Would it really hurt Corsair to throw in another set of screws?

Local hardware has the 6-32 x 1.25 screws for the H100.

I have a Asus Maximus IV Extreme-Z board and LOVE it

I put together a preliminary list of parts for my planned

I think you can filter some of the cash for certain parts into more critical parts of your build.

PSU: Corsair HX1050/AX1200 or Silverstone ST1000-P Gold
Monitor: Dell U2412HM or U2711 - Eyefinity/Surround?
Video Card: ? - 6970s or GTX 580(s)
CPU Cooling: H80 - Mounted at the top of the case. A H100 will only block air flow, and no big difference between the two models.
Platform: ? Sandy Bridge? I think you'll get more return on your investment since this is a new build.
Fans: GT 1850RPM
Audio: Overkill? I think so for a desktop PC. Get a solid sound card like a ASUS Essence STX or Titanium HD. Match them up with a pair of Sennheisers or Audio-Technica's.

I was thinking more like waiting for a new chipset, as I think better stuff is almost out and it would be easy to budget out over time, I have my laptop to hold me over, but I have to read up. My knowledge is not as current on this. Any reason why Sandy Bridge is better than Ivy Bridge or other upcoming chipsets? I want a path that is not a dead end and has the most potential vs the price. There can't be that many upcoming soon ways that fit this criteria. I have to read up.

While the audio is defiantly overkill, I have no plans for big speakers and my PCs are my audio systems now a days. But point taken, I could get that later or trim it down. I could match the Asus Essence STX with my plans for the Westone ES5, which I absolutely need for the gym and on the go, cut out the MM-1, the LCD-2, the CEtrance DacPort, and the Burson DAC Amp options. I'm not sure yet how I want to budget on audio. Honestly, it's almost a separate project from the PC build. Good audio is not budget friendly, but is defiantly lust worthy/worth it if you are addicted to it.

What about putting the H100 in the front bays of the TJ11 via a mod? Has anyone used it yet with the TJ11? Will that even reach to a spot I could mount it? Or is there really no performance difference? I could go for the single rad version if it's better for the case and less trouble. Double rads is new and exciting though.

No interest in triple monitors, I'd rather game on my 47" HDTV. I do most of my gaming on my PS3 anyway. Games like SSX and Uncharted just appeal to me more than Battlefield or other popular PC games, but I also buy games like Battlefield and Mass Effect on Steam. I plan on connecting to my TJ11 build to my HDTV as well as the Dell. The 27" Dell you mentioned is nice, but has a quite a bit of input lag in the TFT Central review, more so than other Dells. Where as the U2311H I had was super low input lag. I'm counting on the new U2312HM to be the same only with LED benefits of longer life/instant on/power savings. I am waiting for that TFT Central review patiently. I prefer the Aspect Ratio of the U2312HM over the U2412HM, which is the only difference I can see.

I had the GT 1850s, while quiet as fans go, they did run a tiny bit loud for movie watching with all my other FT02 fans, not sure it was worth it over the still awesome performing 1450 RPMs with longer lifespans. My temps were overly good too, I don't think that would change with the 1450s. Both are good, I might have to buy whatever is in stock, these are even harder to find this time.

I really like the San Ace fan and the semi fanless nature of the X750, only getting the X850 for the extra juice, as a single GPU avocate I'm not sure I really need more power than that, and if I do, I have the other PSU bay in the TJ11. However, I will read up on those PSUs you posted just in case. Jonny Guru is my fav site to read on PSUs. I just like the reviews for Seasonic products, I could also go with Corsair products that are based on Seasonic designs.

For graphics card, I have not idea just yet what I want. But I think that's easy to pick when the time comes. You have ATi VS Nvidia, and the path is always clear with the brands I trust between them. Of course, External Exhaust will be key in the Stack Cooling design of the TJ11.

The keyboard you want is no longer available.

I know, but they most likely will come back in stock. And there is more than one version out. This just happens to be the one I like the most. I do think that Tactile Touch or Cherry Brown keyswitches are best, and you have options of Ninja or Normal, With Numberpad or Tenkeyless configs. These sell out quick when they come in. By the hundreds. It was listed more for you guys, I already grabbed one the day it came out :) The Ninja has the letters of the keys printed on the keycap sides, great for cool black "Ninja" looks and for no letter print wear factor. These are imported to Amazon from a company in the UK, which also has stock, but it is by far more money to buy direct. But if you can't wait, here is the link for The Keyboard Company in UK:

http://www.keyboardco.com/index.asp

Keep your Google/Amazon speed dial search primed for "Filco Tenkeyless Ninja Tactile" if you want one like mine from Amazon. Check often. Contact The Keyboard Company via email to get info on when USA stock will come.

Again, I'm thinking this is an 2012 early spring build. No rush as my laptop is so kickass. My I may pick up parts that are on sale here and there. I'm especially hoping the TJ11 and the Intel 510 250GB SSD will both drop to $500. I can test any parts with my family builds which I did and have access to, just to make sure everything works. Of course the core parts (Mobo/CPU/GPU/RAM) are bought last and together to rule out conflicts.

Edit: OK, the B&W speakers are out. Too much. I rather get high end headphones. And I switched to the H80 on my plan as I don't see a way to do the H100 easy enough. Which also reduces the fans I need to buy from 6 to 4.

Thanks World Exclusive! Though I'm still going to spend way to much on the heaphones :) What can you do.

Cooling: The H100 mod wouldn't work. The H80 was a good choice. The GT 1850 can be adjusted, the extra speed is helpful to cool higher OCs! I run my fans around 1400rpm, but they easliy hit 17-1800rpm @ 5GHz.

The keyboard can be obtained anytime through the GeekHack forums, they'll import it directly from Asia. I just received my KBC Poker that way. Just ask me when you're ready.

Headphones: Sennheiser HD650s for a neutral sound or Audio-Technia ATH-M50s for more bass.

Ivy Bridge will be better, it's a Spring build so that's a great choice. New video cards should be out by then also.

The TJ11 is a big case so I suggested big power(PSU), just in case you decide to SLI or watercool.

Speakers: A pair of M-Audio AV40 MKII or AudioEngine A5s should do the job.

LOL, does anyone read my posts?? I have the keyboard already! I have the keyboard already! I have th...

Anyway, thanks! I'll run whichever GT fans I get at full blast, I could never get into overclocking or fan controllers. I'll keep in mind the PSU requirements should I go water. Good point.

I think I may just rock my Westone ES5 in-ear monitors for sound, call it a day. It is not as if my HDTV does not have sound, and it will be attached to that via HDMI.

Didn't see that you had the board already. Massive build though.

Ok, ready to build now. Not waiting for Ivy Bridge or Sandy Bridge E. Picked out a motherboard and a CPU. I have to admit though, a small part of me is considering another FT02 instead of the TJ11 to save some bucks.

I've noted that the air filters setup is/was superior on the ft02, had 1 before so I know I like that case. and I am intrigued by the upcoming cosmos ii.

Just received my order of four 120mmGT fans @ 1850rpms. My first parts for my new build. The only question is, did I order enough fans? ... time to pick a case out or something :)

Headphones: Sennheiser HD650s for a neutral sound

HD650s neutral, WHAT??? HD600s are neutral, HD650s not so much. Even Sennheiser themselves said they tried to color the sound a bit with the 650s.

I decided to buy some Westone ES5's with custom artwork, so I'm not going for other headphones myself. I picked a model I can use at the gym as well as at home.

Let us know how that works for you. I've been using custom molded IEMs since 2007 and while I love them I wouldn't choose them over my HD580s for computer use.

Just curious, IF I did water cool in the TJ11, just how many GT 120mm 1850 fans should I buy? I would use only one or two disc drive bays, a single GTX 580, a Sandy Bridge system, the HD racks can go where ever, the single mid sized PSU would stay in it's normal position. That is room for what, up to three Quad or Triple rad arrays at 120mm? Possibly two down below and one in the front bays? I have no idea just how much rad space I should really plan for. I'm with the Airbenders, I need a Waterbender teacher! Hell, Is water cooling even worth it? I could just rock the air like I always do. That's the nice thing about the TJ11, it is well suited for both options.

But I'm considering all options. I may just grab a FT02 yet again. I'm very indecisive right now on this. The biggest wildcard is the Cosmos II from Cooler Master. I really want to see how that turns out. I dig me some handles on my cases, and I know that Cooler Master gets the little things like cable spaces and fan mounting options better than most, so I could rig my entire case with GT fans.

As far as the ES5 headphones go, I'm expecting great things, they are very well received by the headphone enthusiasts. I could see myself using these exclusively. Sure, they are not as slip on and slip off as the open backs, but they are custom fitted for my ear canals, so they have to be somewhat comfortable. The ES5s have to be one of the best headphones or IEMs you could buy right now. To equal them on sound quality for open backs, I would have to buy something like the Audeze LCD-2s, and really, just how many world class headphones/IEMs do you really need? And unlike the LCD-2s, I can take my ES5s to the gym. I'll have them by mid Sept.

That's dependant on the amount of radiator you intend on using. If you want to cram as much rad in there as possible like me, you'll have at least 8 in the bottom compartment. In my TJ07 I have 6 on a 480 rad and an additional 2 on a 240 rad all in the bottom compartment.

I would use only one or two disc drive bays, a single GTX 580, a Sandy Bridge system, the HD racks can go where ever, the single mid sized PSU would stay in it's normal position.

For your setup you don't "need" more than a 360 radiator, but then what's the point of getting a massive TJ11 if you're not going to fill the bottom with rads?

That is room for what, up to three Quad or Triple rad arrays at 120mm? Possibly two down below and one in the front bays? I have no idea just how much rad space I should really plan for. If we assume the bottom has 640mm of room (total overall length is 657) and you use a 180mm long PSU you have 460mm of space left over which is plenty for an additional 360 radiator down there with a 480 radiator. There are 9 5.25" half-height bays equalling 371.7mm total space minus two bays for use (41.3 x 2 = 82.6) giving you 299mm which is plenty for another 240mm radiator.

To equal them on sound quality for open backs, I would have to buy something like the Audeze LCD-2s, and really, just how many world class headphones/IEMs do you really need?

I HIGHLY doubt they're comparable to high quality, open, circum-aural headphones. You just aren't going to get the same soundstage from such tiny drivers. I've listened to LOTS of IEMs over the years and none of them came close to the exact same sound as circum-aural headphones. I've even listened to an HE90/HEV90 setup. That doesn't mean they sound bad by any stretch, but it's definitely a different sound signature.

but they are custom fitted for my ear canals, so they have to be somewhat comfortable.

Comfort and seals may decline over the years. I've definitely had to have my IEMs shells' redone in the past 4 years due to the natural changing of one's ears.

Email from Cooler Master said that the Cosmos II isn't coming as soon as I hoped, as in no release date in sight. Guess that leaves the ft02 or the TJ11 for me. If the TJ11 was $400 or less, it would be a no brainer. But at $575, I'm less sure. The ft02 can be had for under $250...

On graphics, should I go with 6970 or the 580? Also, on the 580, I have a choice between the tripple slot awesome Asus Matrix with dual fans non External Exhaust, or the double slot EVGA External Exhaust.

If you only want one card, get the GTX 580. If you want two cards, get the 6970s.

Also, if the TJ11 was below $400, I'm sure many of us would have bought one also.

You realise the cost of your FT02 plus a $400 on sale TJ11 is like the same as a TJ11 at full price! I'm over the TJ11 for now. By the time it sees a discount like the TJ07 did, we will have the Cosmos III and TJ13...

The of a TJ11, minus the resell of my case would be around $400 also.
I can still wait for the forum member to sell also. I few people were selling their FT02 two weeks after they go them.

Haven't seen any second hand TJ11's since many of the people who bought them are PC builders. The others have enough money, so they don't need to resell their stuff that often.

I noticed that the expansion card area sinks down fairly low into the case, maybe 40mms, but how much room exactly is there between the expansion card area and the top of the case?

You misunderstood me, how much space is there between the top cover and the expansion card brackets (in that small space where all of the wires up in the top are)?

Oh, no idea, I could measure my FT02 for you to get an idea. They're designed the same.
