As apposed to where?

There's in-ears and then there's ear-buds.

In-ears put the speaker itself right into your ear. Helps isolate the sound and generally sound a ton better.
Ear-buds is like what's shipped with iPod, Zune, etc... Just sits on the outside of the ear.

Some people don't like in-ears.

To the question though, it really depends on the person. Shure is a fantastic brand, great quality. But if you don't like in-ears, it doesn't matter if you buy a $2,000 pair... you won't like them.

I have a pair of JVC air-something or the others... very comfortable. But I've used Shures too and they're fine too. But like I said, some people don't like them...

Are these a major improvement over stock iPhone headphones? I find myself using my iPod all day at work now and want something to make it sound better then those cheezy things that come with the iPhone.

as long as they don't hurt like regular ear buds i'm good. i just never get anything specific about that in reviews.

I wonder how these compare to the Shure E2C earphones that I have. Those are simply amazing!

You don't get anything like that from reviews because it's too subjective. It would be like asking you if a pair of jeans was going to feel too tight when I put them on.

these type of headphones have proved to be the best of all worlds for me. im not saying those specific ones, but the type of phones that hook over the ear and can be in-ear if you want them to be, or just have them hooked to your ear without pushing the bud in, and it allows you to still hear other stuff going on around you while being more comfortable too. plus, this kind never falls off your head... great for working.

There's no way someone can tell you whether you'll like them or not. Some people love IEMs. Some hate them. I bought some Sennheiser Headphones that many reviews said were uncomfortable (but very accurate). I had a bunch of Amazon gift certificates from surveys, so i decided to buy them anyway. I can wear them all day without a problem.

I've gone through at least 6 different expensive ($100 range) in-ear buds searching for a pair I really like. Etymotic Resarch's ER6i - http://www.amazon.com/Etymotic-Rese...1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1242152215&sr=8-1 are the best pair so far. Absolutely excellent noise canceling for such a small earbud, and because of their small footprint you can fall asleep with them in and they don't hurt your ears. Previous pairs would force me to either lay on my back or with my face in the pillow where I rather prefer my lady friend's face to be ;)

These shure headphones I have not tried but they seem very similar to the ER6i's I linked so I would surmise that they are close in quality.

I use my Shure SE530's every day of the week.
Two things:
1. they wrap over your ear to eliminate cord thump. All recent Shure models are like this, but people run around with them flipped upside down, or in the wrong ears because they're too retarded to figure out how they're really supposed to fit.
2. They come with fit kits. If you can't find a way you like, you're doing it wrong.

you can wear them all day, and i do, without discomfort.

get the nuforce ne-7m instead. suppose to be the best bang for the buck in IEM's right now. I've had mine for a little over a month and love them.

can you still hear ambient noises with the IEM style, assuming the volume is low or medium? I'm using the stock ear buds from my creative Zen and while I like that I can hear things around me, but the sound quality sucks.

I use a set of cheapo ones for IEM with my band. These would be a definite upgrade.

With my ER6i's I can't hear anything when they're in and playing music, you pretty much have to yell at me. With them in and music stopped people are still pretty muffled and I really have to pay attention to hear them.

Just got these, maybe its because of the softer foam earpieces, but these are way more noise-canceling then my e2cs. Mowed the lawn and could barely hear the mower and had the volume on 12 instead of 20..

MUCH more bass in these.. great set.
