Shrink Volume to make new partition?

Hey guys. I want to install the W8 preview. New to this stuff. I see I can shrink my volume to provide the needed space for a new partition. Do you recommend I proceed this way?

Defrag disk and then used gparted to shrink the current partition and create a new one for W8.

If you have Vista or 7, they include the ability to shrink the partition built into the OS.

As pointed out, defrag first. Then open disk manager and right click the partition, then choose shrink.
