Show Your LCD(s) setups!!!

i am sorry but having 7 monitors is unnecessary for 99.99999% of the people are you are not the .00001%. I mean, have it if you want it but deosnt make it less useless and pointless. Monitoring tools and IM should take half a screen at most.

Depends on the person and the job - in theory only 1 monitor is *NECESSARY* for any person. When I testing OS installs and applications with virtual machines and emulators like Bluestacks I can run out of monitors pretty darn quickly, especially if I'm testing graphical stuff that requires certain resolutions (testing commandline stuff in Linux is trivial with SSH). When an application needs to be tested on as many as 6 separate OS's for compatibility it's amazing how much you hate WINDOWS-TAB after a short period of time. As for my monitoring tools they take up nearly an entire monitor by themselves as there are apps watching the video cards (I have 3 GPUs), CPU, RAM, and UPS.

In terms of gaming I could probably get away with 6, although the 7th monitor is nice to have as it holds the desktop icons and taskbar (3 for Eyefinity, 1 for monitoring, 1 for game notes, and 1 for a browser when I get stuck). Certainly I needed less than 6 when I had my LLL/PLP because I was gaming on only 1 monitor.

To each their own, but given how much the price of LCDs have dropped (especially big ones like the 27") and the availability of > dualmonitor video cards I expect to see a lot more rigs like this pop up. I've already help build 4 of them for independent music studios, video editors, and one very insane special-effects artist, all friends of mine who saw my little setup and instantly wanted it.

For having color-critical work, it looks like you need to calibrate your monitors pretty badly. :p

I think you may be on the wrong website, this is [H]. ;):D

I am not saying its not cool or ppl should not have it, I said its unnecessary and pointless.

I am not opposed to it and do not think people should not have it. This is a enthusiast site and enjoy coming here to see ridiculous setups.

So, you enjoy seeing ridiculous setups, then tell someone with one that it's pointless and unnecessary and pointless? You contradict yourself.

With enough porn, any number of monitors can become necessary.

As for this awesome sounding 7 monitor set up, pics or shens. :D

it doesnt have to be a contraction. Just because its useless and pointless, it does not mean I enjoy seeing it done. One has nothing to do with the other.

I did not come in and say, you are a moron for having that many screens, I simply said that you do not need them. But its a show your monitor thread so the more monitors the better I guess.

This is what I've been waiting for. I call BS if no pics are posted.:D

I've actually posted it in this forum before (http://hardforum.com/showpost.php?p=1039326781&postcount=20937), but here you go:

I was originally planning on putting 4x22" 1920x1080 monitors on the upper row to match the lower row horizontal resolution (7680 pixels). That would require me to replace one of my monitor mounts (I use 3). 3 Dell U2913wm's would be a perfect upper row to complement my 30" monitors and it would not require me to replace the stand, but 3 of them is $1500+ while 4 22" 1920x1080 monitors would be around $600, so even if I buy a really good stand like the Ergotron LX dual stacking arm ($250) it would still be a lot cheaper. Right now it is 4x20" 1680x1050 because (a) they are the right PPI and (b) I had them left over when I originally upgraded my 6-monitor asymetrical layout.(LLL/PLP). I haven't upgraded simply because I got laid off in November so I'd rather eat and pay my mortgage right now. Soon as I get another job I'll make up my mind on which way I'll go.

That's a pretty awesome setup. What video cards are you running that off of?

Does it hurt your neck to look up at those top monitors? I used to have my secondary row above but it was too hard on my neck.

I have a HD6990 and an ASUS EAH 6950 DCUII in tri-fire. I used to have an XFX HD6950 as well for quad-fire, but due to layout limitations of my motherboard, Crossfire cables, and case it forced the HD6990 into the x4 slot which really affected microstutter.

I don't use the top monitors for constant viewing, just for secondary stuff that I would like to take a quick peek at without having to open an application or change application focus. Looking at the top row on a regular basis does make my neck hurt. I tried putting a pair of wing monitors (2x20" 1600x1200 left over from my PLP) but that actually made my neck hurt worse as I was twisting it past 45 degrees just to see the monitors and they are outside my peripheral vision while the upper row is (barely) not.

Just got rid of the old Jerker desk, love the added workspace of going with a proper L desk.

Desk mount is the Ergotron MX. The neck of the monitor wasn't removable but I plan on upgrading to either the Dell U27/U3013.

Please find a job soon so you can get 3 of those Dell 29". :D

I realize there has been additional commentary regarding this, but the more I'm exposed to additional screen real estate, the more I find it incredibly useful. Initially I had two 26" monitors, and that was great at first. Eventually the screens started filling up as I opened more and more reference material, and I upgraded to three 30" monitors, in LLL setup.

Even with that, I find many times that I would prefer to have more space available to drag oft-used windows to for reference, like one might have done years ago with heavy volumes made of dead trees.

... or it could have something to do with my horrible short-term memory. What were we talking about again? Let's go ride bikes!

Thanks for this. I've been considering adding a row of monitors above my 30's to hold reference material / monitoring for remote servers / whatever else I want to be able to see as I'm working / playing / whatevering on the main display.

Ultimately I'd want all of the displays to be powered off of one machine for ease of window manipulation, but with a second keyboard / mouse that could control apps / desktop space not involved with gaming. I haven't found a good solution to this yet. I'd be interested if anyone has any suggestions. Synergy with two machines is something I've explored, but that doesn't give me the true single desktop experience I really want.

You should try Mulitiplicity from Stardock. Awesome virtual KVM software. You can drag and drop files from computer to computer by dragging it across the displays. All with one keyboard and mouse.
It is a network based KVM.

Thanks for the heads up on this. It has run across my radar before, but it still just seems like a Synergy+ with a couple added features (encryption, file transfer).

Unfortunately, both it and Synergy+ lack the feature I really care about, which would be seamlessly moving windows from one system to another, so in the case where either of these tools are used to control a system with a set of monitors, the entire expanse of screen real estate could be used by either machine.

On that note, I would highly recommend the Synergy+ to anyone looking for that feature set who wants a FOSS solution and is capable enough to implement encryption via stunnel if needed!

Input Director is the one I use to use - it's donationware (no crippling) and it was a lot more stable than Multiplicity was for me. However, unlike Synergy it only works in Windows, no OS X or Linux support.

Sounds like you want to use MaxiVista (www.maxivista.com). They have a free 14-day/50 launches trial
