Should PBS Have Faked Its Fireworks Show?

First of all, who believes anything they see on TV anymore? I can see feeling ripped-off if you paid money for a live fireworks show and ended up with digital reruns but I'm not sure this is the same. What do you thing about the fake fireworks?

The public broadcaster acknowledged intercutting old footage with its live broadcast shortly after the show ended, saying in a tweet, "We showed a combination of the best fireworks from this year and previous years. It was the patriotic thing to do." That admission brought a flurry of criticism from people who were unhappy with either an air of media deception, a preference for perfection over authenticity, or some combination of both. After PBS' tweet, Washington Post reporter Paul Schwartzman called it "the Milli Vanilli of fireworks"

If they're going to do that they should put a disclaimer on it. Live should be live, unless otherwise stated.

Should have said something before. But, I really don't care. This is pretty insignificant in my life. I don't feel ripped off, I don't feel taken advantage of. There are bigger things to be pissed off about.

How far do you get to go before "live" can't be considered "live" anymore though? Is a show on a 30 second tape delay "live"? 60 seconds? Where's the threshold? If you recorded something and replay it without any editing within the same day can you still call it live?

Honestly, Saturday Night Live has (almost) never been "live" if you lived on the west coast. Ditto for the Live show that now stars Kelly Ripa. Even Jimmy Kimmel's show stopped being live years ago (though most of his are "recorded live" even today).

People just need to get the fuck over it and assume everything they see is altered or replayed in some fashion.

I get why they didn't show the live fireworks. With the rain and the mist there would have been nothing to see, but they should have said they were going to cut over to a previous year's display. Then no harm no foul.

OR!!! or.... they could just do things live, if the said it was live. And vice versa.

I didn't watch it, but does seems it is getting blown out of proportion of course.

Who watches fireworks on TV?

Old people. Disabled people. People that can't be outside with the smoke. People from out of town that don't want to drive to see a display.

I like to go out and watch them. At least now that I'm young. In 30 years, I might not be able to. I hope to see them from my condo view when I'm retired, though. :D

Who watches fireworks on TV?

I do. Live in a small town, surrounded by small towns and the fireworks show is pretty sad. This year it was 20 minutes long and honestly my farmer neighbor put on a bigger show by himself. So the big shows like boston and NY in high def on the TV are pretty enjoyable to watch.

That said these people are moaning about the show on "public broadcast TV" that is free...I mean seriously PBS? When have they ever put on a good show?

Shit, I love a lot of PBS stuff. They had a lot of great shows. Maybe one you heard of: Sesame Street. :D

The same people complaining about this would probably protest Bob Ross not using conflict free mineral based paints :/

The threshold is where it's commonly known to be. If you're going to change it, you should acknowledge your viewers to an extent. That's what this minor backlash was about.

That son of a bitch.

:D

It's the bitch of the week. A lot of college students do the same thing. A new thing to bitch about weekly, and the last cause goes away.

Who watches fireworks on TV?

Anyone who lives in the Southern US. Currently 99 degrees outside and supposed to top 100 three days this week. Absolutely no reason to be outside.

On the subject, how cares about fake or real fireworks. A good show is a good show./

Oh boy. Should be scary what people post about this. Conspiracy???

Source? This game is actually on my radar now after all the good things I've heard about it in the gaming section.
Well, of course it's Source. It's not going to be Unreal, why use an engine they don't own?

I suppose for the same reason any game developer would use a game engine that they don't own, Herp Derp.......

Well, it is Washington DC after dark. I'm sure not everyone wants to risk life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness just to see some fireworks.

I always use my freedoms to hide inside my home with the lights out, cowering in a corner with a shotgun because I'm afraid of every fucking thing that moves: like a true American.

Yes, because Washington DC is the safest city on earth!

My bad the response wasn't intended for you. I read your post and it reminded me of a different but related topic, creating a new post would have made more sense. Being cautious in DC at night is reasonable.

I've lived in suburbs where people were constantly treating each other with suspicion and paranoia even when there was very low crime. My snide comment was meant for them.

Same for our area. Started at 9:45. We are all hot and tired by then

And about that porn.

I think it's a good thing to call them out on bullshit. I wouldn't spend much time doing it though

Second of all, who watches fireworks on TV? Watching fireworks without hearing the sounds and feeling the percussive blasts is like being explained sports by someone who knows nothing about them.
