Should I wait for OCZ or go with this...?

I have been considering sub-ambiant cooling for awhile now...holding my breath for the OCZ phaze changer, but thats been awhile now. I hear rumour? that its within 30 days and tagged at $299. Is that right? If so I will probably wait, otherwise, I came across this:

http://www.frozencpu.com/ex-wat-90.html?id=R9pVH3Ss

which I am sure doesn't have quite the preformance, and is a bill more, but I really am getting tired of waiting...and this would fit totally inside my case (which Im not sure is an issue or not). It received good reviews from the E3 show and others I have read. <shrug>

Thoughts?

Thanks,

The OCZ unit will not appear in 30 days, it's been delayed for at least 3-4 months. I wouldn't take any bets on it showing up in that time frame either. As to the other choice, I'm not a fan of any TEC unit and for that price you can pick up a good used phase change system that will outperform either of your choices.

lets get with the specifics.........

on that retailer page, there is a link to a review of this product. the review is pretty positive.

http://www.extrememhz.com/freezone-p3.shtml

wait a second........on socket 939, they don't compare the coolit freezone to any watercooling offerings......why might that be?

might that possibly be because people get results like this from much cheaper watercooling loops? http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1061636

it's not a good kit. you can't run a pelt that is strong enough to do any good for a CPU off of a computer PSU, like this one is doing. i can expand on this later, if you want me to.

I wouldn't trust it. I mean, it's basicly a watercooling kit, but with the radaitor swapped for a TEC. Hmm... where does that heat go?

Not only that, but a well designed pelt watercooling set (all custom selected parts) will set you back less, and perform as good as, but probubly better, than the CoolIT.

I'd go on, but I'm sure you don't wanna hear, and I'm also tired because I was at the Graduation Dinner Dance.

Thanks for the input people. It all makes sense.

The really attraction to the freezone unit is that is a self-contained, pre-sealed unit that will fit inside my case. Plus I dont have any interest in cooling but the CPU right now.

I haven't made the full jump to watercooling, only recently graduating from a good-air CM Hyper-48, to a low-end, self-contained water setup - the Coolermaster R-120. Im not sure exactly where my apprehention is, be it my faith in my ability to set one up, or just the over all concern in putting liquid right next to my spendy components...my mind just sends up red flags thinking about it, lol.

I guess I will start looking into true water-cooling. What's a good unit for around $2-300?

well, it's above your desired price level, but this one cools the works: http://www.hardforum.com/showpost.php?p=1029492097&postcount=14

this one in in your price range and takes care of only the CPU: http://www.swiftnets.com/products/H20-220-APEX.asp

i don't like the blocks that they are using, personally, and there have been instances of people getting screwed trying to get warrenty on parts that were damaged out of the box.

i can spec you a nice custom loop within your budget if you specify your goals.

Try Corsair's Nautilus, for around $160+Shipping. It's supposed to be a fairly capable water loop; it includes a CPU block out of the box, but Corsair claims that you can add your GPU(s) to the loop as well. It gives you upgrade potential, or it means that a CPU alone should be easy to handle.

Alternatively, I believe Chilly1 was doing custom compressors a few months ago- wasn't his quote usually around $300+S&H for a fairly low-level cooler?

and chilly1 is 6 months in the rears on projects/work at the moment .
There is a couple people on XS.org that build them as well as chilly1 in the US and in EUR.

I wouldn't say my units are $300 though lol... impossible for me to build something like that... for the price :)

And OCZ's will not be @ $300 either. I have over that in one I am doing with used parts.
Jinu117 is a good builder with many under his belt. Give him a PM and see what you can work out.

Around $600-$700 for the unit but he hasn't deivered anyones units from 9+ months ago, or returned anyones unit they sent him 6-9 months ago for upgrades and has pretty much not delivered on much at all. i would think that would be a real risky venture to take.

What is the deal with OCZ's phase change unit? Was it all smoke and mirrors?

i have a feeling they jumped the gun with unrealistic pricing and then realised they just couldn't make a profit on those margins and would look like asses if they then released it at twice the cost it was originally set at, especially when the unit wasn't exactly very powerful......not even upto a VapoLS.

the last i read about it was that they couldn't work out a reliable way to ship the product without it getting smashed up by couriers.....i call BS on this because asetek and the prometeia ppl don't seem to have any problems.

but seeing how you can't even talk about it on XS forums without getting slammed ...who really knows??

Well, since the OCZ unit seems to be dead for now at least, and I can not afford a $500+ phase setup right now, after reading many reviews I decided to try out the Titan Amanda:

http://www.titan-cd.com/eng/heatpipe/amanda.html

to see if I can get an improved OC from my AMD 64 4000+ (presently stable running 2.85GHz @ 1.6v, 54c load w/ ambient 32c) than my current Cooler Master R-120.

At $70 and 1000+ grams it's not cheap or light, but it possible of sub-ambient temps (under certain conditions) and has a controller to adjust it to avoid any condensation. On top of that, it will fit inside my case and not require a PSU upgrade. I have already thought of upgrading the 60w TEC with a 80w, but I want to see what results I get first.

Thank you for all your input and replies...it's what make this community what it is. ;)

She arrived today...

Can't wait to get her installed. :D
Check this thread if you would want further updates on this unit...

:D

Here are some results...

Setup:
AMD A64 4000+ running @ 2.88, x11, Bus=259, HT=777, 1.6v
Asus A8N32-SLI Deluxe
CoolerMaster Real Power 550w PSU
Room Temp= 23c

Idle w/ Fan(s) maxed-
CoolerMaster R-120: 35c
Titan Amanda: 32c

Load w/ Prime95 Large FTT for 6 Hours-
CoolerMaster R-120: 57c (Fan @ 65% - Quiet, Failed 5 minutes in)
CoolerMaster R-120: 52c (Fan @ 100% - Loud)
Titan Amanda: 47c (Fan @ 100% - Quiet)

I am happy with these results although the install was kinda a bitch (see above mentioned thread for details). It has never gone past 52c even at 1.72+v. And did I mention it's quite quiet? For $70 and weighing in at 1035g, its not for everyone, but if you overclock and are looking for a great cooler, but can not afford a good H2O or phase unit, you might want to check this little gem out. The TEC although small does a great job of holding temps right where you want them no matter what you throw at it.

I was able to get my AMD64 4000+ stable at 2.9 which was not possible with my other coolers.
Happy OC'ing!!!
