As the title states... should I? 2x PNY 470's for 1 Sapphire 5970? Only reason is I have 3x 30" LCD's that I would like to use in eyefinity again.

Also have a Sapphire 5870 that I would use to run 5970+5870 Tri-Fire

do it i say ! 5970 is underclocked 5870s in one pcb plus you get 100 more for better card

He's talking about giving away another $100 on top of the $700 worth of GTX 470's.

You can buy a brand new 5970 for well less than that. Crap, you could return both 470's and simply order a 5970 for the same price, and keep the $100.

oops :(

I thought he was trading

GTX470
GTX470

for a

HD5970
100usd
?
:p?

I'd do it if it was an even trade with no extra cash involved since you already have a 5870 and can do trifire.

So the two scenarios are:

1) 470 SLI on a 30" monitor with no triple monitor support for a few months and an idle 5870 (don't know what you're using it for right now)
2) Trifire 5970 + 5870 with eyefinity on 3x 30" monitors with better (maybe?) performance than 470 SLI even when the drivers do finally drop.

Is (2) worth $100 over (1) for you?

At the moment, you are looking at about another 2 months wait to be able to use 3 monitors on Nvidia (if it even comes out). Depends how much you want Eyefinity. Nvidia specs are also contradictory. Several places show they are limited to 1920x1080 on each monitor for surround. I'm guessing your 30" are a lot bigger. If you go for an insane resolution, you can also crossfire another 5970 later.

Rejig the $100 that is part of the trade and making it lopsided.

To be honest, you should hold out for a 4GB 5970 if you are doing 3 30" screens.

Since the rumors of limitations to Nvidia surround might happen, and since you got 3 30inch LCD's the 5970 is the way to go for you.

I am sure you dont want to stick with 1080p only resolutions with your 30 inch LCD's

Is it a reference 5970 or a 5970 Toxic (with 4GB of memory)? The GTX 470's are worth well more than a reference 5970, as others have mentioned, so you should be getting money with the 5970, not the other way around.

The 1.5GB of memory on those 470s does a lot for them over the actual 1GB usable memory on the 5970 since you are going for such a high resolution.

If you have patience, wait 2 more months to see if Nvidia gets their act together!

yea but when you got 3 2560X1600 monitors, you REALLY do not want to go down to 1920X1080p just to use nvidia cards.

I mean thats just basically throwing away money if you ask me, those 30 inch monitors are not cheap

Yeah thanks for all the input guys, I really appreciate it! I think I almost did it more for desperation of using my lcd's at the monster res of 7680x1600 in eyefinity again... I think I will keep my 5870 for eyefinity and sacrifice setting and or res and wait it out with my 470's until nvidia gets their shit together!!

I offered to still do the trade and minus the $100 other than that I think I will regret making the decision...IDK

Remember, we still don't know if 1600 vertical resolutions will be possible with Nvidia. The official specs used to say 1080 only although there are rumors of 1600 being possible.

True. If that's a straight up trade, then it's fair.

2x 470 = $700
5970 = $700

Otherwise hold out a bit or see if you can still get a refund for your 470s then buy a 5970?

It's not like there are any cards in existence that can drive 3 2560 monitors at acceptable settings/framerates though. Maybe if you want to play Trackmania or Half Life 2. We would need games to stay stagnant while GPUs doubled in power to make that viable.

If you really want to run Eyefinity on 3 30" LCD with good frames. Sell the two 470's,and also your HD5870. Then use the money to buy 3 5870's with the 2gb ram. I had two HD5870's overclocked with an I7 920 @ 4.2GHz and in some of the newer games it would sometimes dip down on the high 20 to low 30 FPS. And this was running 3 27" 1920 X 1200 monitors.

Eyefinity doesn't support any more than two GPU's, the third 5870 would sit there doing nothing....

Unfortunately even if you do the trade, your still going to be in trouble with a 5970 with those monitors... The MINIMUM you should use is either the Toxic 4gb or the best option is 2 5870 2gb's. The dual 5870's is supposedly the best option because the single 16xPCIe 2.0 is becoming the bottleneck on the 5970. That is assuming your MB has dual 16xPCIe 2.0 slots with a combined total of 32 lanes and not electronically limited. ( all x58's I think ).
