I have a toshiba c55t laptop it has the option of 1 hdd i have a 750 gb 7200 rpm drive in there now it is about half full i just got a deal on a 240 gig crucial m500 ssd.

my options are
throw the 750gb in a usb box and run the ssd main
throw the 750gb in a odd hdd tray losing my odd but going to dual hard drive
750 games+media+pagefile 240 boot and games/apps i wish to load quickly

or find another place for the ssd.
i dont use the odd often and the button to open it is not easy to press it is just a dvd burner i could probably get by with an external burner

what direction should i go.

Use the SSD for your OS and put the HDD in an optical caddy. Get a USB-=>ATA/SATA adapter for the optical drive in case you need it.

Why not just carry the ODD around in your bag and swap it in when you need it?

Put the SSD in the main HDD tray so it's always in, and put the HDD in the ODD caddy and swap them when you need ODD. Downside: Can't copy (directly) from ODD to HDD.

Otherwise a USB adapter - or USB ODD - could work.

Really a lot of it depends on how often you would use the ODD. Most people barely touch them these days, but if you do use it, then it's worth having. And just how much you use it compared to the HDD shall determine their places.

I would do this:

'throw the 750gb in a usb box and run the ssd main.'

My reasoning (if it is valid - I don't know if it is as I'm only *speculating*) is that the laptop should run a bit cooler. If the 750gb HDD which is 7200rpm is in a usb 3.0 enclosure, for e.g., and you have usb 3.0 port on the laptop, it should still be fast?

But, if speed is of the essence and convenience then you might want the ODD in the mobile situation.

Maybe it won't make much difference to battery life and heat? Someone who has more experience with laptops can comment? I just figured a 7200rpm is going to produce more heat and use up the battery a little more (compared to a SSD).

The only use I've had for an optical drive in the last five years is installing OSs and watching movies. How often do you do either, and is it hard for you to swap it out when you need?

For $240 you can get 120GB SSD + 1TB Platter in one 2.5" form factor. Leaving you still with the optical drive.

For 21 dollars I can get a tray to replace my odd that holds a hard drive and I can take my 750 and 240gig drives I already have and put them into my laptop.

Also for $240 I would rather put that towards a new i5 or a10 based laptop that comes with 2 HDD bays I paid about 24 for the ssd and I paid 21 for the odd to HDD tray and it is going into a laptop that you can get at Walmart for 300. I got for free.

Lose the ODD. Almost pointless anymore. For the rare times you might need it, just swap it out, or get an external USB one for cheap if you are too lazy to pop out the HDD.

1. OS, apps, and often-used important stuff on SSD in main bay
2. Movies, music, porn, and miscellaneous junk on HDD in optical bay converter.
3. OEM optical drive in trash. A USB ODD in an enclosure carries better (since it's in a protective enclosure) and actually works on other computers better.

ya, lose it, when was the last time you used it?

OS can be installed from USB now a days anyways.
