hey guys,

i am looking at getting a new card but i dont have 2-300 bucks to get a x800 or something like that. i have heard that you can take a 9800se and use the omega drivers and softmod it to a 9800 pro. and if i get a good one, i can flash the bios to xt speeds. is it possible to do this with the current suply of 9800se's on the market or not. a little help would be great. thanks

some 9800's (like mine) only have 128bit memory, and if they aren't arranged in the L shape then its impossible to flash them to XTs. Mine has all the rendering pipes though so i don't really care.

ok so that means if i was to get a 9800se that had l-shaped ram, in theory i should be able to softmod it to 9800pro and then flash it to XT??

the 9800se has 128bit mem and the pro has 256bit mem.. I don't think you can flash an se to a pro because the extra 128bits of memory interface of the pro, just isn't in physical existance on the SE.. I could be wrong though

You are in many ways.

Get the 9800se type 2 which has 256bit default but even the type 1 has 256bit though it's only in 128bit mode at stock. The 128bits hardly ever softmod the extra ram bits but the 256bit 9800se's have a good chance of unlocking those pipes. However, ones like mine are on a 9700pro instead of a 9800pro PCB which means the extra power connector is a floppy disk connector instead of a hard drive connector and it doesn't give as much juice to the card so it's very difficult to get it any higher than even 9800pro speeds. To do that, you'd have to voltage mod it and put on some after-market cooling.

ok so if i see a pic of a 9800se card and it has a floppy connector, then that is a 9800se on a 9700pro card??

You want the "L" shaped memory and 256-bit 9800SE. You can try it, but no guarantee it will work. I tried and got artifacts when I did it. 0-2 in softmodding :(.

Yep. That's what I think I found out along time ago anyhow.
