Shadow of the Tomb Raider Is Getting Review Bombed on Steam Because It's on Sale

Early adopters are pissed that Shadow of the Tomb Raider is already 34% off (and 47% off for the Croft Edition with all the DLC) just a month after release, and a majority are venting their frustration by giving the title bad scores on Steam. For whatever reason, most of these negative reviews are reportedly coming from Chinese gamers.

On Reddit, predator8137 has provided a rough translation of a few responses, many of them with angry words for Square Enix. “50% off in one month, SE is unethical.” “Your mom is dead. If I ever preorder again I’m an idiot. I’ll eat sh*t if I ever touch your game again.” “Go fu*k yourself SE, 43% off in one month. These Japanese developers should die. Ugly business practice.”
 
Imagine how all those Battlefront and Destiny 2 players feel..........of course I have no sympathy because those dumb motherfuckers deserved exactly what they got :) #DrinkinAndRevenge
 
People are outraged and here I am just thinking, it's not discounted enough!

Picked up Destiny 2 about a month later for $5... $5! Early buyers must've had an aneurysm.
 
Square did this with the first one too. I think I picked it up for $20 after six months.
 
Buying a game full price is dumb. It'll always get discounted anywhere from a month to a year.

I only buy full price if I want to support the developer. Last one was the evil within 2 mostly because I want a part 3.
 
Chinese gamers are much much more toxic then the rest of the world. If as if they are never educated how to act properly on the net. (not only this game but other games too.)

always finding anything to pick a fight with the japanese or koreans. ( even going as far as destroying their japanese cars...lol whatever) , or the West on forums which their own gov have fire walled them from. (they do not understand the concept of irony)

i hope publishers do delay releases to the Chinese market by a year, or just geoblock them. Pleaaassse geoblock them.

This stuff blows over after a week or so when the next controversy hits the news. Doubt it will really have any change on their discount practice, the game did hit top seller again with the discount.
 
I bought the game when it came out. No regrets. I loved it. In my mind, it is one of the few games worth it's asking price.

This goes with business as well on how the Chinese act.
As far as the publishers delaying or geoblocking them? Nope they are dumbasses. They worship the god of money trying to tap into the 500 million who has some sort of money off of them... Too bad that their Chinese counterpart/partner is going to be making the real money.

Most were never educated how to properly act in any situation tbh.
They're generally spoiled brats who're coddled to a degree most would not believe or even comprehend....especially the boys.

Generally I would say, don't pre-order games for full price. Though with this particular title I can see how people probably expected it to be as good as the first two, and pre-ordered. Too bad it was a bit shit compared to those.

Neither a pre-order nor season pass buyer be. Unless of course its CD Projekt Red, cause they give a fuck.

They're complaining because it was sold at a much higher price to them.

Like you wouldn't complain if you got a new anything, and then 1 month later they cut the price in half on the same item? I'm sure as hell would feel shitty and cheated about that.

You could say that's the price of doing business with steam. Their 47% off barely matches the price I paid for the game when I pre-ordered.

If I really like a game I buy it full price to support the genre.

Tomb Raider... is definitely not that game for me heh.
 
I'll catch it over BF when it's 50%+ off. Absolutely love the reboots, but I knew the price cuts were coming, gotta keep sales up before it's over shadowed (zing!) by newer releases, even if that means selling for a bit less. Especially since this is probably on the bottom end of AAA titles as far as market penetration is likely to go.
 
It is Square, they've become known for this. They aren't the only ones, especially on PC. My rule anymore is, Oct/Nov releases will be on sale for Black Friday or Christmas sales and you should wait if not willing to pay full price to play now. Destiny2 isn't a great example because it got panned early on (deservedly so) and I paid 20% off on console and PC at release. It is the same with games that get released in late spring, wait for the summer sales. I think Far Cry 5 and maybe one other are the only $60 games I've bough this year till red dead2. It is harder now though that bestbuy and amazon have killed off their 20% preorder deals.

This is more of a symptom of your country. Steam prices are the same as anywhere else although the sales are better and more frequent on other sites like GMG. I know in the past a lot of Europeans whined about games being priced higher than they were in the US, although the price included their VAT taxes required by the government. Even here though, you can easily find the game well below the MSRP and Steam sales are "meh" until they hit $5-7. GMG and similar typically don't go that low.

But Square has been known to do this. I suppose they're still stuck in the pricing mindset from 6 years ago when games went dirt cheap within a year. Those were the days. I wouldn't complain. I remember DE HR went down to $10 within 4 months of its release. Release date shows August 23rd 2011. On December 22nd 2011 I paid $10 for it on Amazon. Another $4 something for the DLC. That is pretty much exactly 4 months post release!
 
I pre-ordered w/ season pass. Not something I do often, maybe 1 or 2 times a year. I've loved all of the reboots so far and don't mind supporting. Most other games I normally and wait for the sale so I see both sides but people hating because they paid full and now it's on sale need to grow up.
 
If you're willing to pay $60 for a game then you must have really wanted to play it at that price.

Those that are butt hurt could have waited for the upcoming Steam autumn/winter sale or just buy it on cdkeys.
 
That's the problem with some of the public reviews. They are just hate filled rants half the time. :(

I think that is a very ignorant view on it. It is a big fuck you to have the Croft edition for 50% off just 4 weeks after release. The game still has technical issues so many people that paid at or near full price have not even be able to play the game without aggravating bugs. And the Croft edition contains content that has not even released yet new newcomers get that discounted.

MOST games do not have have the full versions or DLC on sale until that DLC has been released. MOST games do not have a 50% sale just a month after release. MOST games do not get a massive discount while there are still massive bugs being worked on. And by MOST, I mean practically NONE.

I haven't purchased anything retail for years. If anything retail is more expensive than even steam nowadays. I got Tomb Raider from GMG.

Can't blame them if the game isn't selling well. Reviews on YouTube didn't show a lot of optimism. This was clearly a wait for a deep sale.

SE will have to take a loss on this game.

In reference to the bold text, that's how I feel about certain games. Few games I immediately buy or pre-order at full price just to have ASAP on release, but when I do, it's because I know that I'm probably not going to have buyer's remorse. I pre-ordered the Resident Evil 2 remake when it was first available because I probably won't care if it's mediocre; I'm going to enjoy it regardless.

With that said, I really wanted this Tomb Raider game, but intended to wait for the inevitable Steam sales since it's not a day-one purchase game based on my preferences. Since I liked the past games enough, I feel that $40 is a good value that I'm willing to pay for a newish game and, while I'm only two hours in, it runs great, looks and sounds great, and plays just like the last two games that I enjoyed.

I guess patience is learned from getting burned. Damn you Tombstone pizza.
 
Since I am a really casual gamer and that is after an 8 year break, I will only buy when it hits $15 dollars. I still have not played Rise yet although I bought it during Steam Summer sales because I had finished Tomb Raider before that. I have about 40 games in my library (average 5 years old titles) so I am not in a hurry.

I feel the exact opposite. Releasing shit games on day 1 is the industry standard now and it's enabled by people who pre-order and buy them on day 1. Yes, some companies do actually respect their intellectual property and the community and release a solid product on day 1, but there are so many games that need a ton of updates (or a few major ones) and people still buy them sight unseen time and time again. Stop buying garbage on day 1 and wait for a decent product to be released and maybe developers will start releasing a decent product on day 1. I know it's wishful thinking...you can never stop the people who absolutely need to play something on launch day...but for those people to go on and complain when it goes on sale later (which it's guaranteed to do) is just ridiculous. We live in the day and age of information and yet people are too impatient to be bothered to wait for the information to become available that they are basically blindly buying something that they hope to be what they want without actually knowing what it is and then they bitch when it isn't.

You can buy on day 1 and get a day 1 product or you wait and buy after it's been patched to functionality and save 50% and yet people willingly choose option 1 and then bitch about it.
 
I really really enjoy the game. Albeit, I am glad I bought it on sale, but I don't see what all the fuss is about. I would have happily bought this at full price, but as most people have learned, it's best to wait for a sale to get the best value for your money. :)
 
I'm gonna guess there is a pretty large dash of racism involved. The chinese haaaate the japanese, and man does it go back a long way.

Yeah its always worth checking GMG/similar sites. Steam isn't the best price at launch. But GMG essentially has a permanent sale. But right now Steam beats GMG by $6 so its always worth checking back before you purchase. Eventually this game will go on deep discount on Steam (~ $7.50) and GMG will no longer be competitive price wise. But it won't happen nearly as fast as it did. Just checking and confirming that DE HR went down to $10 just four months post release seems crazy.

I'm also going to assume the mediocre nature of the game and likely sales have prompted the discount this quickly (for 2018 standards).

And how old is shadow of war? I remember gold edition was $100 and it's selling for around $20-$22 these days. Are those early adopters mad?
 
As a nice added bonus all those buying in during the sale (and after) will benefit from the "beta tester" that bought at full price!
I'm trying not to buy any (single player) game at launch anymore. Better to wait for a sale. Even better if you wait for a sale on the GOTY edition with all the DLCs!
