Hey guys I need help setting up a 8 man LanParty in my house. I'm thinking about buying 2 of these hubs Click Here! and using my friends dell computer with a 10 base NIC in it to host the game server from. I need help on how to make all the PC's talk to each other I tried reading the guide at lanparty.com and that just confused me. Can someone please help me?

Were gone be playing games like:
CS:S
CS 1.6
CS 1.5
BF2 16 Man
Call of Duty
UT2004
Doom 3
The lanparty is going to be 2 days long. :D

Thank You!
Alex S.

"Switching Hub "

http://www.encore-usa.com/product.php?id=11&lang=
"The ENH908-NWY is a high-performance Fast Ethernet switch with 8 ports capable of 100Mbps speeds. Auto-negotiation operation (NWay) automatically determines between 10Mbps or 100Mbps when connecting to other networking devices. "

Cool, looks like a decent enough device.

As for the actual setup, it would be a bit easier if you could tell us what guide you are using and at what part you get confused.

i get confused on the setting up the IP's part so the server will show up in the server list I was think if I could just could just host the server plug it in to the hub then plug up the rest of the PC's to the hub and the server will show im a total noob to this stuff never set up a network in my life before.... :p

Spend a little more and get a better 12 port switch. Something like SMC, Linksys, Trendnet, Compex, Netgear, etc. will not cost much more and would likely be a better unit. To hook them up simply connect all the computers to the switch, not much more involved than that :)

Ok, with just 8 people you can do this manually. Since I'm not sure how much of this you grok I'm give it to you in the "Explaining it to my Mom" terms. No offense intended, just easier that way than assuming.

Each computer needs to be assigned it's own IP and address and told what it's subnet mask is. Each IP will be different (but similar) and the subnet mask will be the same for all. Think of it like a house address and zip code. All of the computers get their own address but they all are in the same zip code.

Easiest thing to do is to give the computers addresses in the 192.168.0.0 range.
Write this down ahead of time and give everyone a slip of paper with their information on it for the party. Save yourself from headaches later on.

Server:
IP: 192.168.0.10 Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0

Comp1: 192.168.0.11 Subnet Mask:255.255.255.0
Comp2: 192.168.0.12 Subnet Mask:255.255.255.0
Comp3: 192.168.0.13 Subnet Mask:255.255.255.0
Comp4: 192.168.0.14 Subnet Mask:255.255.255.0
Comp5: 192.168.0.15 Subnet Mask:255.255.255.0
Comp6: 192.168.0.16 Subnet Mask:255.255.255.0
Comp7: 192.168.0.17 Subnet Mask:255.255.255.0
Comp8: 192.168.0.18 Subnet Mask:255.255.255.0

You don't need to use this exact numbering but you do need to keep in mind a few things.
the number range is from 1-254 (except in a few odd cases which we don't need to cover here) and no 2 systems can have the same IP.

ok thanx i got that part down now how do i give them the ip like i mean set them up on their PC's how do I set all those ip's up

Right click my network places and go to properties. Right click my network connection go to properties. click on tcp/ip and go to properties, you should be able to set them up from there.

i did that now what do i but for gateway or w/e and wich one do i go to GENERAL TAB or the other one?

Gateway should only matter if you are providing net access for them, since it doesn't sound like it you could leave it blank. If it doesn't let you, just put the server IP in there instead.

now are those pics for the server or the players computer thank you for helping me out guys
and what about the dns server part

For both actually. Just do this for easyness.......

Server: *Computer hosting the LAN game*
Put in IP Address: 192.168.100.100 / Subnet 255.255.255.0
Leave DNS and Gateway fields blank!!!!! *Since you are not going out to the internet*

Machine IP Address Machine Subnet Mask

Computer 1: 192.168.100.101 / Subnet 255.255.255.0
Computer 2: 192.168.100.102 / Subnet 255.255.255.0
Computer 3: 192.168.100.103 / Subnet 255.255.255.0
Computer 4: 192.168.100.104 / Subnet 255.255.255.0
Computer 5: 192.168.100.105 / Subnet 255.255.255.0
Computer 6: 192.168.100.106 / Subnet 255.255.255.0
Computer 7: 192.168.100.107 / Subnet 255.255.255.0
Computer 8: 192.168.100.108 / Subnet 255.255.255.0

Remember to leave DNS and Gateway fields blank because judging from your response, you do not have WAN connection to the outside world, so you do not need to have Gateway or DNS entries filled.

now i got it all down thank you all guys and one more thing what would be some good rj-45 cables to you

Buy what cooresponding lengths you need here. There really is no difference between brands despite what they "say" just remember to get at least Cat5e not stock Cat5 otherwise you will have problems with gigabit speeds should you upgade to that *and you will* Cat6 will work fine also, its above CAT5e as far as specs go, just a bit more expensive.

im gone get cat6 then

I LOVE these forums there is always people who help you thanx to you all. :)

If he is connecting to the internet won't the router automatically assign IPs? Also, if not just have someone bring a router and hook the hubs into it. Again, IPs will automatically be assigned.

See my first comment about hating marketing droids (not you, just the blending of terms).

I'm glad I'm not the only one whose ass gets chapped by this...

Home User: "How do I share my laptop drive with my desktop drive through my ROUTER?"

ME (on this forum): "You don't"

Home User: "Then how do I do it?"

ME (on this forum): "You make sure they are both connected to your SWITCH and enable file and print sharing"

Home User: "But I don't have a SWITCH I have a ROUTER"

I thank companies like Linksys for screwing this up for everyone...

Thats only if he buys a router and only if DHCP is enabled on it.

any one here know of any good 16 port hubs for a really good price? THANX

At this point in time you really want to be looking at switches not hubs. Jump back to my post with the definition links and read about the differences between the two types.

The prices between the two are small enough now that there is very little reason to use a hub (unless you have a need to see everyone's traffic and enjoy collisions).

sorry from all above

Do you have a router - as in the connection to your internet ? goes from your modem into a "router" if so it can assign ALL of the IPs automatically and save time with this IP setting up./
