Hi,

I just upgraded my Dell Precision 470 Dual Xeon Processor Workstation video card w/an ATI X1950XTX. I loaded the 6.11 driver.

I purchased the X1950XTX in order to run Folding@Home.

How do I set up, not only the single X1950XT to run Folding@Home, but the 4 processors, 2 Physical and 2 Hyperthreading as well?

Can the single X1950XT run F@H on a multiprocessor system, or does it run 1 cpu to one video card?

Thx

1x GPU client along with 3x Console CPU clients, each in its own numbered folder. The GPU client will also consume one CPU, IIRC.

So in my case:

1 folder for the GPU, 2 Folders for the Physical CPU's, and 2 for the HT CPU's, correct?

.

Ignore the hypertheading if you want the GPU client to run at full speed as it needs a core to itself.
1x Gpu & 1x CPU clients will max your Points per Day out.
Look for ~750 PpD for the GPU client run a 3D speeds & normal PpD for the CPU one.

If you try and run more CPU clients you'll loose more PpD from the GPU client than you'll gain from the CPU one.

Luck ............. :D

I've found the balance on my P4 630 with HT to be about 65-70% "CPU" used on the one CPU client, at least while running a X1950Pro. So you'll probably want one client with another running at maybe 50%?

1 folder for running 1 GPU and 1 Physical CPU together. Do not use that Physical CPU's HT.
1 folder for the 2nd Physical CPU.
1 folder for the 2nd Physical CPU's HT for a total of 3 folders?

Next, use the latest Beta GPU F@H software for the 1 GPU and the 1 Physical CPU.

As for the other Physical CPU and it's HT, use the latest official F@H software?

Does this sound right?

.

For the latest official software, is the Client version better, performance wise, than the Graphical?

Finally, what's the best way to get the GPU and CPU's to run? Is there like a management software for mult-processors to run F@H available?

Sorry for all the questions, and Thx.

.

Always use the client version. As for a management software, you don't really need any, just run the two cpu clients and the graphical client and windows will manage it for you. Two of the graphs will be maxed out and the other one's should sit between 50 and 60 percent for the GPU support and the other processes your PC runs.

I just read over at the F@H Forum, that you shouldn't run the Client and the Graphical software together.

Is this true?

Yes, run 2 of the cpu console versions and one gpu console in your case. Don't bother with the graphical client, it doesn't work as well. I think you may be mixing up the console/graphical version and the cpu and gpu clients, there are console versions of both the cpu and gpu clients, they are what you want to run.

1. Windows NT/2000/XP/Vista "No Nonsense" Text Only Console - Version 5.04

2. Windows XP/Vista GPU client console version (with multi-GPU support) - Version 5.91 Beta

These two?

.

Yes, run two of number 1 and one of number 2. I generally create a Fold folder on C: and then create subfolders, in your case I would have CPU1, CPU2 and GPU1. Put the a console version in each folder, obviously the CPU console in CPU1 and CPU2 and then the GPU console in the GPU1 folder.

I would set up 1x GPU & 1x CPU core and benchmark it first.
As a hyperthreading core is worth ~15-20% of a true core ,then the two hyperthreading cores only add 30-40% increase in points.
So 1x GPU & 2xCPU @ 70-75% may work.
The danger is that when you add the third core in you start to starve the GPU client of cycles.
So does the increase in points from running three cores outway the loss of points if the GPU client is running slower.

PS. I tend to use the names GPU1, CPU2, CPU3, etc as that matches up with the machine numbers set in the config section.

Luck ............... :D

More questions, sorry.

First, I shut down HT in the BIOS.

Second, I loaded "Windows XP/Vista GPU client console version (with multi-GPU support) - Version 5.91 Beta"

Is the GPU only suppose to be running, because in the Window Task Manager, it shows both CPU's to be running also. I temporarily assigned it to run on CPU 0 only.

If the CPU's are suppose to be running too, how can I permanently assign the GPU software to run on CPU 0 only?

Finally, when I loaded the software, I said Yes to have it automatically run when starting up Windows, as a Service.

Thx for your help.

Best use of your machine is SMP client.....renable HT...load linux/dual boot or vwmare....put 1950 in another box and quit jerking off like Marty

 Friendly aren't you?

I noticed in some of your postings that you've asked for help too. If you don't like my asking for help, then you shouldn't either.

sorry guy...was an just opinion...GPU clients...PPD..suck...maybe 700 if you know how to set the 1950 up . other cpu client not much 100+/- depending
SMP depending on those xeons speeds......and w/u 1000PPD.......

its its close- your choice......

zim is an asshole, don't worry about him. :D nice edit up there zimboy BTW....

How embarrasing, you ask for help here and then go post on the offical forums... come on guys!

Ok, GPU can't be installed as a service as noted.

Do:

start>run>browse to GPUconsole.exe and add -config flag

Disable service, change your team..... :: j/k

The GPU client should now be running. To launch it in the future so srart>run>browse to the client and launch w/o the config flag. The client will auto close if you launch a game or other 3d apps. Just the way it works, needs context fo the card (RDP also borks it). Kinda blows the client only really runs in a command window, just the way it is.

You can actually, basically install the GPU as a service, I did a write up for this at the offical forums someplace.

For CPU, start>run>browse to cpuconsole.exe (what ever file name is) and add -config flag. Enter user/team (let me know if you need help with the team... ) and say yes to service install. Say yes to big packets if want more points, but client used more ram sometimes.

Do regedit for -forceasm on CPU client if you want, check stick here.

You should have a second command box up now. Tou can close this and start the service manually (services>right click start) or just reboot the box.

Leave HT off for now, the possibility for additional points (sometimes actually less) is just not worth the headach for you right now.

You shold not need to go into advance options to pick different machine id's, I think GPU defaults to "9" and CPU to 1.

Anything else?

Anything else?

yea try getting some PPD, instead all this mumbo jumbo, non point getting instruction crap

:)

As Marty says.

Set up GPU client first.
Create two shortcuts to it.
One for your Start -> programs -> startup folder so that it starts when Windozes starts & one for your desktop so you can restart it as needed.
When it first run check which machine ID it uses, I think it will be 1.
If it is then you will need to set the CPU client to 2.

Now set your CPU client up.
You can either run it as a service or like the GPU client.

If you want to tweak you vidio card speeds use "ATITool_0.25b16pre8.exe", earlier versions don't work with a X1950XTX.

Luck ............ :D

Thanks for your help guys.

I've got it up and running, w/the GPU Client running using CPU 0 and the GPU together, and the CPU Client running on CPU 1. I know the GPU is running because of the temperature increase of the video card, from around 64 to 80, so I know it is doing something.

I do have a problem though, in that the GPU Client eventually stops running for some reason. The CPU Client is running fine, w/no problems.

The CPU Clients starts right at boot up, while w/the GPU Client, I have to manually start it. I haven't had a chance to do your suggestions for getting the GPU Client to auto start at boot up.

As for posting on the official forum, I did that after Zim01's remark.

Looks goodish so far.
You need to reconfig it so you fold for the [H]orde.

Luck ............... :D

Team 33 or I lock this thread! ;) :p

don't doubt that.

GoHack are you closing the client?

I think you need to run the -config flag and go into advanced options to change machine ID to other than 1. If you post CPU log this will config that. I was off before thinging GPU defaulted to 9 (was suggested, and a good suggestion at FCF before).

2x clients w/ same machine ID ='s one closing.

It's shutting down on it's own.

Everything seems to be running OK now.

The only last thing is how to set up the GPU Client as a Service.

Oh, by the way, I signed up for team 33, which I hope is [H]. :D Do you have your own web site that shows the numbers and such?

Thanks everyone for your help.

Hi,

I got my second machine up and running last night, and I plan to get another one online tonight.

I'll eventually have four or five online, maybe six, if I use my laptop.

Question, as I add more computers online, should each machine's CPU ID be different. In other words, for my first machine, the ID for the two processors were, 1 and 2, accordingly in the Client Software? With my second machine, should the two CPU's on it have ID's of 3 and 4, and so on, for the added on computers, running the F@H Client?

Thx
.
