SETI.Germany's 16th Annual Pentathlon (2025)

🫡

I used it briefly to see if I could target GPUs, but that rig should be back on MW@H full time now (suspended NFS). Unless I jacked my settings up, lol. Will check them this evening to confirm.

Is there a bunkering guide somewhere? I think I know what the term means (work but don't submit, draw new work units), but imagine it requires command line config.
Bunkering you ask?
Explanation on what it is: https://hardforum.com/threads/bunkering-why-you-should-or-should-not-do-it.1829159/

Been a few years since I've run the BOINC client. Still have it.... launched fine. Still had all the prior projects so unsuspended WCG. Turns out my account at WCG no longer exists for some reason. Registered again using the same email as I had before (still has old emails in my gmail account), set it for MCM, and joined the team. The boinc client still shows my work done stat, 1.5m or so and if I choose update it starts and then changes to communication deferred for an hour. Was going to let this ancient 16 core E5 xeon crunch on it some. Don't recall running anything for Anandtech but there it is, I think someone here asked some of us to help them for something at some point. lol

Edit to add - just unsuspended and updated Moo and that downloaded a bunch. My GPU is also old though.... just a 1070gtx.

So is WCG working for you now? If not, you may have to contact their support. It may have been idle during the move from IBM to Kremble which could have gotten purged due to inactivity.

Nope... going to try and remove and add it back to boinc. My old stats for it will probably just be gone but whatever.

Got WCG going as well as Milkyway....

I dont have srbase and it appears I'd need an invite code to create an account for that.

That worked.... Seem to be hitting this old desktop pretty good now.

Looks like team Ukraine is issuing a challenge to us in the WCG marathon run. Can team Ukraine over take us in this marathon? From the Seti Germany pentathlon shoutbox this morning.

You see it remains exciting at the BOINC Pentathlon.

I saw an email on it but was too busy to muck with it. Plus I didn't want it to detract anyone's interest from Pentathlon goals.

On the road this week. Looks like a box went down sometime today. It was running WCG. Anxious to see what it looks like when I get home.

Red Alert. At the pace team Ukraine is running, they will overtake us in about 3 days in WCG marathon.

Since all the 5 projects have been announced, there are only two cpu projects - WCG and NFS (javelin, require bunkering). MilkyWay will end today at 5pm/8pm PT/ET, so can move some cpu crunching power over to WCG and/or bunkering NFS for throw #2 (starting May 10 5pm/8pm), #4 (tba) and #5 (tba).

Should I bother with srbase? That one in particular does hammer the crap out of my system and gets the fans roaring. I cannot tolerate that running during the day while I am here working and using this system.

Just planning on letting milkyway run though this evening while still letting wcg run a task as well for now.

Just run it at night then. lol

We are well ahead of the teams below us in MilkyWay City run. Less than 9 hours to go till the end of the race. I've stopped crunching MW tasks, abort those not yet started and let the remaining tasks finish. WCG has intermittent work but NFS (javelin) has plenty but you need to be able to bunker and release the bunker on the throw days that OP has announced in the first post.

There are two gpu projects, srbase and einstein. I usually run all my gpu projects with power limit as you seem fit to manage your surrounding temperature and noise. We appreciate any contribution (big or small) that all the [H]ordes volunteers have give to the [H] team.
Edit. If you like bunker (keep saying this word) and be able to drop the completed tasks on bonus announcement day (tba, there are two days), do Einstein.

Oh hey, that's similar to how I got it carved out a few hours ago. I mean, I have MW to 'no new tasks' on both computers and just finishing those that should take overnight (9PM here).
WCG back to downloading and processing. I had to suspend it, because MW wanted all of the cores and cycles.

For some reason, Pi is not picking up any MCM work, but I guess that's hardly a showstopper :D

Release your kraken (NFS bunker) today for the next 24 hours and then bunker up again for our second javelin throw (corresponding to javelin event throw #4) which will be announced in the next few days.

Run as many cores as you can in the next 24 hours. The total points accumulated from this throw will be our target for the next two throws.

Good luck!

What's our best project on Einstein? I have a mix of GPU projects selected. Windows only.

On Linux / 4080S, All-Sky Gravitational Wave search on O3 v1.17 () x86_64-pc-linux-gnu gives around 35-40% more PPD compared to Binary Radio Pulsar Search (MeerKAT) v0.16 () x86_64-pc-linux-gnu

Just speaking about what I know... No Windows computer at home in the last 15 years ... 😅
Einstein does support Windows and I do see Windows CUDA clients for O3 and MeerKAT but I don't know about their respective PPD.
If you give a try on Windows you can easily calculate PPD based on points and GPU run time.

Sitrep May 11: Everyone should start bunkering NFS now. There is no WCG tasks available, so download NFS and crunch and set network to never.

Part 2 update: Steeplechase event (Einstein@Home) has just started. Note that there will be TWO bonus days (one day each) announced anytime during the 7-day period at 5pm/8pm PT/ET. During that bonus day, credit granted will be multiplied by xx.xx% as announced at 5pm/8pm. If your tasks have not reached expiration (Meerkat BRP7 has 14 days , O3AS has 7 days deadline), best to bunker the tasks until the bonus day announcement for maximum points. For expert DCers: If you run out tasks to crunch, best to setup another multiple instance with some bit of tweaking to get tasks to download to fill the work cache depending on the subproject selected, otherwise just release the bunker and build another one on the default boinc client but potentially losing the opportunity to earn maximum points.

Part 3 update: In our first javelin throw (NFS), we threw 3,076,936 points. In our text two throws (event #4, tba and #5), we should aim near that target. Remember to download enough tasks to run NFS and plug any leak (i.e. set network activity to never/suspend)

Our team second javelin throw (project NFS@Home) starts on May 14,Wed 5pm/8pm PT/ET. Release your bunker after that time.

In case anyone hasn't been paying attention, WCG has work units again.

Less than 3 hours left for SRBase. With the way their points jumped earlier, I have a feeling it was someone bunkering. There is a possibility they do it again.

May 13 5pm Sitrep:

Marathon run (WCG): #7 position. We have ~10M points lead over the team behind (CNT)
Javelin throw (NFS): At the end of the third throw, my prediction is that we should be able to finish at #8 spot assuming we throw at least 1.9M points to beat out BoincAustralia. We could force NoTEAM to work harder for their #7 spot by throwing 3.1M points.
Steeplechase (Einstein): Today is the bonus day 30%. Drop your bunker. Prepare for the next bonus announcement which could be lower or higher than 30%.

My recommendation for the team: Put the gpus to work hard for Einstein. Still need some support on NFS. WCG, just maintain course.

I was just going to check if it was a bonus day for Einstein. I need to drop what I have as I'm about to run out of bunkered work. My NFS bunkers are not too far from processing as well. Not sure if it didn't bunker enough or not but it doesn't seem to be as much as I had before. Shouldn't be too far off even if it is a bit less. That said, a 5800x and a 2600x aren't exactly massive bunkering powerhouses so even if I am falling a bit short of our first throw it shouldn't affect things too much.

One important suggestion: Since Einstein task requires quorum of two, best to download enough tasks to last for the next 5 days. If not you will be disappointed when your validation rate at the end of the race turns out to be very low. O3AS has shorter deadline of 7 days while BRP7 has 14 days. You may need to update the project (DDOSing) with simple script if necessary to get enough tasks to fill up your work cache.

The runtime for work units got updated correctly once I uploaded a bunch so my Einstein bunker is a lot better than it was. I had to setup a second instance before because it didn't grab nearly enough. This time it looks like the single bunker I have now is probably twice as big as the previous two combined.

So far I'm doing decent on validation rate. Of the ones I turned in already about 80% are validated.

edit: It also isn't going to hurt that I'll be connecting to the server constantly turning in completed work units for most of the next 22 hours or so, so there will be plenty of time and chances to fill up a full bunker.

Reminder: Our Javelin (NFS) team second throw starts on May 14 (today) at 5pm PT and runs for the next 24 hours. Our target is anywhere between 1.9M to 3.1M points to secure, at best 8th spot per hourly update results here. Once that target is reached, bunker again for the final team throw starting May 16th 5pm PT.

Good luck [H]ordes.

Edit: May 15 5:10pm PT Sitrep

NFS:
In our second throw (event throw #4), we are now at 1.87M. We should hit 1.9M target very soon. Time to bunker again. Understand that there is backend server issue in uploading tasks. It is safe to suspend and bunker again for the final throw tomorrow and not to worry about uploading tasks. Just make sure you start downloading enough new tasks to last till the start of the final throw. FYI NFS server should be more responsive after the end of this throw. Edit: At the conclusion of our second team throw, we now only need 1.61M to stay ahead of Rechenkraft and maintain the same 8th spot.

WCG: Holding steady at #7 spot still but the deficit between us and the next team (CNT) has dropped from 10M to 7.6M over the past 2 days. Seems like CNT is trying to pass us.

Einstein: At #10 spot. No major threat yet. The last bonus day could be announced anytime from today at 5pm till Sat 5pm PT. has just been announced. 30% bonus starts from today 5pm till May 16 5pm. Drop your bunker!

Tim_axe, welcome to the [H] team and thanks for supporting us in the team second javelin throw (event #4). Hope you can continue supporting the team in the final throw.

In Einstein@Home, we just passed team AMD Users by a small margin in the last hourly update. Can we maintain our lead?

You see it remains exciting at the BOINC Pentathlon.

It would be great if we gathered another 50% of the GPU cycles sitting at F@H for the next couple days on Einstein. Especially today, with the bonus in place. We'd move up considerably if we could marshal the F@H resources on GPU events.

We gain more during bonus days via bunkering. This is where bunker helps. In raw credit terms, AMD Users is ahead of us (98,690,237 vs 94,552,387). After the bonus day, we will have to keep pace with their raw output.
