I need to setup some server monitors that will alert others if; HDD fills up / cpu utilization is high / no ping reply, etc.

Are there any free open-source options? or what 3rd party paid solutions are good?

I looked into uptime, little too expensive for what I need however.

Any suggestions are welcome, thank you!

Nagios is open source and will probably fit the bill.

+1 Nagios - good shit

If you wanted to go with a paid solution, what kind of servers are they? If they are proprietary systems go with their own solution maybe? HP SIM, IBM Director etc...

Also look at Zenoss. I use it at work, works like a champ. Takes time to configure and understand but you get that with any powerfull program.

I tried all the suggestions described. Naigos, Cacti, and Zenoss are all good, but I think Naigos setup is a breeze.

+1 for Nagios. We use it to monitor our remote servers. Especially if the WAN links are down.
