SED displays at Canon. Holy S*****!

You'll be without a display for over a year then my friend, seeing they won't be out 'til "end of 2006" at the earliest...I'm content with my 2405 for that long :D

The only thing more exciting than SED displays are the carbon nano-tube displays. Infinite contrast ratio because an inactive pixel produces _no_ light.

I'm guessing SED has more of a chance of catching on though. Carbon Nano-tube displays seem like yet another "Wow gee, nano-tubes can do cool shit" gadget.

sed? more like SEX?! m i rite?

but seriously, uh... man, i wish i could afford such a display :(

The blacks look very nice, and the backlight problem is gone. It is thicker than an LCD and would probably be a lot heavier. The blacks, backlight, ghosting, and viewing angle problems are solved, but it doesn't mention anything about dead sub-pixels nor scaling.

I can't wait.

It would be nice to see an SED to the Sony 24in CRT comparison.

100,000:1 contrast ratio...wtf. The black levels must be incredible...

It does this by creating a very small black hole which actually sucks in the light!

And the most exciting "display" of all, the one thing that rules them all by lightyears, is a 3-D Holographic display. I sooo wish to have such a display...but I doubt we'll see that technology perfected and sold in mass-quantities before 2020... :(

You probably will be able to. It is predicted that most current display mfr's could easily adopt and ramp up production, which would lead to a free-fall in prices. LCD's have been in a price free-fall in the past year or so (and still to this day). have faith danielson :D

These SEDs will spread like STDs

that is the prediction. Hopefully it isn't just marketing hype planting seeds in our head :)

Response times of 1millisecond or EVEN LOWER!!!
Contrast Ratio of up to 100,000:1 !!!
Viewing angles of up to 160 degrees !!!
Can scale up to 50” of HDTV viewable goodness !!!
Blacks can go as low as 0.003 cd/m2 !!!
Maximum Resolutions will be 1,920x1,080 !!!

damn im getting excited. haven't been like this in a while. what should i get, motorcycle or SED ?

Most sources that i've read said that SED panels can be made larger than 50"

Any definite word on size limitations? anybody?

Now thats what I'm talking about. As a laptop tech I stare at various LCD's all day, and have grown to dislike the inherent traits of LCD's like non-true blacks, dead pixels, backlight bleeding, etc. And plasmas aren't too much better. This is definitely the only thing that could convince me to trade out my CRT's for something flat

Where did you get that from? Viewing angles should be 180, like plasma and CRTs.

jacked it from xtremesystem forum :( Its funny cause i read that and saw it said 160 but in my head read 180.

Yes I cant wait for SED , Ill continue buying used FW900 CRTs if my current one doesnt last, LCD's days are obviously numbered (already) :D

This is why I didnt waste $800 on a 24 in. lcd widescreen. Just got the 24in. sony crt to hold me off till these are released.

Remember how expensive LCD's were when they were released? several years later they are just now becoming affordable. I don't think we'll be able to get SED for less than our first born until 2010.

Not only that but I'm not sure if I wanna be the first few buyers of this new technology. There's always something that goes wrong and this isn't something that willl be cheap.

wow, amazing specs on those monitors! I don't think I'll be an early-adopter on such a complicated technology but I will definitely be following the news on these.

The Carbonnaotube thing is from Motorola. It is going to be the winner, the cost to manufacture is a tiny fraction of the SED or LCDs.

The breakthrough they had was getting a bazillion CF nano tubes all stand on end uniformly, they found a super simple way.

They were talking 42" TV's for $399 given how much less expensive it will be to make.

No word on manufacture, they were seeking licensee's.

Will they flicker like CRT's do?
No. CRTs have an electron cannon that scans across the surface, each scan is one update, one flicker. SEDs have constant discrete pixel elements, like LCDs. But they do not suffer the delay of LCD tech.

It looks awesome but I wonder if it'll suffer from burn in like current CRT technologies. I know curent CRT tech doesn't burn in that much anymore but has anyone heard about this?

will there still be dead pixels like lcd??
Wouldn't suprise me a bit. Any time you've got a big array of discrete display elements dead pixels are a possibility. Whether the problem will be less than or greater than LCDs I have no idea.

I think I'm in the "hanging onto my tubes" club until SED comes out. Well, unless one of my screens dies. If I can't get my hands on another 24" CRT or one of my side screens goes I'd pick up an LCD.

I'd rather not upgrade to something that's "partially better, partially worse". Now for my side screens I really don't care. I spend most of my time at my computer looking at the center screen. Hell, my side screens aren't even flat.

I'm getting a feeling the dead pixel thing is not much of a problem outside of LCDs. Dead pixels, as I understand it, are due to the crystals getting stuck in one position. You see, LCD pixels control the amount of light they let out by the orientation of its crystals.

SED pixels work in an entirely different way: there's an emitter and there's a phosphor element. Phosphor can burn in a bit, and it can fade over time, but it can't get stuck as crystals do. I can imagine emitters malfunctioning, but I see no particular reason they would. It looks fairly simple, no moving parts, so to say.

i hope thats the case cause i cant stand dead or stuck pixels. i bought an lcd with a dead pixel right in the middle of the screen and could not be ignored. i have tried four different brands and three had one or more dead pixels.

Due to the differences between both technologies (LCD and SED), and with SED being far easier to manufacture, the possibility of you getting an SED display with one or more dead (sub)pixels should be at most slightly higher than with a CRT. Or in other words: very unlikely.

I'm hopeing for better resolutions. 1600x1200 on a 17in moniter would be awesome. Of course it would scale up as the moniter got bigger. Think 4000x3000 on a 30in moniter. That would be amazing!

could you imagine how small things would look at that resolution on 30in monitor?

its either gonna be viagra or high res. i made my decision :D
