Secondary monitor woes

Whenever I connect a secondary monitor to my laptop, the primary monitor(laptop screen) shuts off and the secondary monitor becomes the primary monitor.
I cant even renable was use to be the primary monitor after that.
My secondary monitor worked fine for a day before this shit started happening


Hardware(kinda old)

ATI X600
Windows 2008 64bit
same nonsense on both drivers 8.9 and 8.11
Secondary monitor connect via VGA

Try this:
1. Plug in monitor to laptop
2. Wait for it to become primary, and then press Fn-F8 or whatever key that would force the laptop to output it to external display
3. Go to CCC Display manager, and try to enable your secondary(laptop) screen.
3 a. if it doesn't work then attempt to click on "extend screen to..." on your secondary(laptop) screen.
4. finally if your laptop screen is once again usable, make your laptop screen primary.

Should solve the problem, try it.

Thanks but that did not work, which is what I was basically doing.

I got it to work however by plugging in the secondary(external) monitor and then going to device manager and scanning for hardware changes(it automatically sets it up and a secondary monitor), Instead of plugging it in and then enabling it though CCC.
