I am putting this under the Case Modding because... well, this is where stuff gets made.. ideas are brought to life, and well you guys just plan know it all

Since there is not a desk out there that has what I want.. anyone have some nice diy ideas.

I would like lots of room to not only HAVE a PC sit on, gaming ! but also room to tinker with new systems, or just work on the stuff 'friends' always want me to help them with.

Thinking a nice U-Shape, multi level top for monitors to sit on, overhead cubbies to hold stuff and keep things looking nice.

Actually, I would like to build the PC into the underside to keep it out of the say with holes to run cables to the top part for the CD-ROM, USB, etc.

I have basic ideas.. dreams... search all over and came accross some great home builds.
It needs to be made out of wood since that is the only skill / tooks I have. (tablesaw, etc)

below are some inspirational stuff I have found to give me more ideas

If I could figure out how to post pictures, I'd show you what I did :)

with a name like TechLarry you should know how to post those pic !!! :p

I can't talk... you don't see pic of my existing desk. Not much to look at.

JR3ID, you have similar tastes as I. Those are great desks also, just need to take them to the next level for a real computer person, not a pecil pushing person.
I want my CD-ROM, USB, etc built into the monitor stand... NO, I don't want one of those Lian-LI $3000 desk nor the imfomus $10K desk

Just all the things a techy, modding, gamer could want ! ;)

You can't paste in or upload directly. I'm not sure how folks are doing it here.

Use a free hosting service...or your own. The copy the url to the pic like this but without the spaces in the image tags:

I've seen the Biomorph desk also, and I would agree they look great, simple straight forward design... but I need more space.. maybe 2 of them would work but they are $$$$ ;)

wow you just gave me a great idea.
although its a little off topic, but i think its a great idea.
what if, you had a rather large desk, and cut a hole in it the size of your case window and or whole case, and then mounted your case there? that would be cool, kinda like having your case window as a mouse pad. You probably wouldnt want a side panel fan though

actually Billiam411, I have see that done.

somewhere in this forum, some guy made a desk.. the whole top was the window into his computer... looked like a big water splash window. The keboard was also built into the desk and the whole top was aluminum. kool but I wouldn't build the KB into the desk.. a nice curved KB tray so the mouse / joystick could fit on either side and also act as an arm rest.

I might just buy a couple cheap desks with metal stands and build my own tops / shelves / cabinets.. sigh, time

the mypce one reminds me of that southpark episode where the Mr Harrison builds a car powered by sticking a long shaft in your backside while sucking on another shaft.

.....

It isn't even made fo the home environment, i mean what's it gonna match in your house?

Ok, here goes...

Two mirred L-shaped desks, bought at Staples for $99 each.

Good use of horizontal surfaces :)

Servers are not in this room. They are locked up elsewhere.

Almost....... I can rehost it so you can see how to do it to include the image not just the url if you would like.

Not sure if this OfficeMax link will work, or if it's wacked, but check out this setup. If the link doesn't work, go to OfficeMax and search for "versatility".

I like that one because you can arrange the piece in a straight line, or in a corner shape. Neat idea, and I keep telling myself to steal their design and improve upon it! :D

Unfortunately, they're a bit heavy, so make sure your OM will ship it for free if you don't have one close by. :)

I like the mirrored L-shapes.. not bad price. It sure looks good...

servers huh... shhhh, you can tell us where they are at :p we are all trustworth here :D

Sure!

very nice mobiux... has lots of elimantes that I am looking for !

Great job

My desk is homemade, takes two walls. But tis' still smaller than what I need. I've got two computers on it and I don't have the room to work on stuff.

I want to build a bigger desk.

Another good place to look at for ideas is professional studio/recording/TV audio/video furniture.

I have 3 jobs, one is the master control operator for the 2nd largest Christian TV network in the world, the other is sound engineer for my church, and another has nothing to do with the picture.

I was at work yesterday and I was checking out the new area where our editing team is going to be moving in from off location. each one of their workstations was a desk that was a corner desk but didn't go to the point in the back it was just angled, had 3 monitors on each one, 2 level, and TONS of equipment and still had TONS of desk space.

I THOUGHT the manufactuer of the desks was "Westell" but I dont guess it is. Its something like Westin or Westill or something of that nature. I was hoping by saving a phonecall or driving 45min back to work somebody knows what im talking about.

Search for studio furniture,
Professional audio/video furniture
Recording studio furniture
etc....

Its professional audio/video furniture, costs ALOT but can easily be homemade without the quality needed for the professionalism.

Example this desk
http://www.djaudiosuperstore.com/images/Omnirax/audio-video/Force-24.jpg is only $1,155 equipment NOT included.

This thing is "only" $406

hey Jr3ID...
thanks for the links.. I have seen a few audio type workstations, but all these are great :)

need to now shapen my pencil and pull all these great ideas together and see wht I can come up with. also need to figure what my budget will be.. limited of course !

2nd largest Christian TV network ?? hmm, Angle1 , TBN ? :D

Ok, so it's the img tags.

I figured when I chose the "Insert Picture" command in the editor it would already do that :)

What happened to your computers face?

I could never deal with my monitor being beside my keyboard like that.

that computer is only used to play Worms2, its really not a big issue :p

Much like Whatsisname I have 3 of similar setup in a U shape around the room. I used an interior door on top of metal filing cabinets. The one I use has a slide out/under mount keyboard tray w/ mousepad. This was the most economical way to fit 5 different comps into one end of a room.

very nicely done mlbruehlly ! drawers are great touch, added difficulty level :D

I'm shooting for a free standing version, so I can move it around / take with me if we build new house.

Yuuuum. Oak....

I love natural wood. As far as I'm concerned, you approach a natural piece of wood trim with a paint brush and your hand should be lopped off.

Built my own earlier this year... Spent about $600 on materials (red oak) and a couple hundred on new tools ;)

Here is the link the all the pics:

Well, no pic, but really, no pic needed.

I took a cheapy 6ft crafting table, put one machine just outside one set of legs, the other on the other end. Monitors, KB, etc on the respective ends. Roll the chair from one side to the other, or stretch arms from one keyboard to the other...

My problem is all the stuff that builds up between them. :)

Adjustable height brought to you by the original manufacturer and my drill. (The legs need a little more support with two monitors on the thing. So, added screws to make it JUST MY height.)

Total cost: 39$ for the table at OfficeMax, plus my time adjusting for feel and then screwing the thing together.

I'd post pics, but the wife would shoot me. (Unless I cleaned it up. :p )
